Application of Nanoemulsions in the Synthesis of Nanoparticles

2018

Abstract Nanodroplets of a liquid in another immiscible liquid provide confined spaces in which chemical reactions can take place. If these reactions lead to the formation of nanoparticles, as it is the case for polymerization or precipitation reactions, nanodroplets can be used as templates for particle synthesis. The most common example of application of nanoemulsions for particle synthesis is the preparation of polymer nanoparticles by miniemulsion polymerization, but also inorganic materials can be produced in this way. Nanoemulsions are as well an excellent platform for preparing polymer/inorganic hybrid nanoparticles, either by using directly the templating effect of droplets during t…

Effect of the supramolecular interactions on the nanostructure of halloysite/biopolymer hybrids: A comprehensive study by SANS, fluorescence correlat…

2020

The structural properties of halloysite/biopolymer aqueous mixtures were firstly investigated by means of combining different techniques, including small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), electric birefringence (EBR) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Among the biopolymers, non-ionic hydroxypropylcellulose and polyelectrolytes (anionic alginate and cationic chitosan) were selected. On this basis, the specific supramolecular interactions were correlated to the structural behavior of the halloysite/biopolymer mixtures. SANS data were analyzed in order to investigate the influence of the biopolymer adsorption on the halloysite gyration radius. In addition, a morphological descript…

Recent Applications of Carbonaceous Nanosorbents in Solid Phase Extraction for the Determination of Pesticides in Food Samples

2018

This article covers recent trends of carbonaceous nanomaterial supported solid phase extraction for the liquid and gas chromatography analysis of pesticides in food samples. Several advanced carbonaceous nanosorbents have been reported over the previous decade for pesticide extraction, such as graphene derivatives modified by combination with silica, amines, polymers, and/or magnetic nanoparticles. The advances in this field have opened possibilities for using neat or modified carbon nanotubes or graphene-type sorbents for the pre-concentration of polar or nonpolar pesticides by solid phase extraction (SPE) or micro-SPE methods or to apply such nanomaterials for the removal of matrix compon…

Polymer induced changes of the crystallization scenario in suspensions of hard sphere like microgel particles

2012

We investigated the crystallization scenario of highly cross linked polystyrene particles dispersed in the good solvent 2-ethylnaphtalene and their mixtures with non-adsorbing low molecular weight polysterene polymer using time resolved static light scattering. The samples were prepared slightly below the melting volume fraction of the polymer free system. For the polymer free samples, we obtained polycrystalline solids via crystallization scenario known from hard sphere suspensions with little competition of wall crystal formation. Addition of non-adsorbing low molecular weight polystyrene polymer leads to a considerably slowing down of the bulk crystallization kinetics. We observed a dela…

Living Anionic Polymerization in Continuous Flow: Facilitated Synthesis of High-Molecular Weight Poly(2-vinylpyridine) and Polystyrene

2014

We describe the living anionic polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine (2VP) and styrene (S) in continuous flow, comparing two micromixing devices with different mixing principles. The use of a continuous flow setup reduces the experimental effort for living anionic polymerizations significantly, compared to a conventional batch system. By adjusting the ratio of the flow rates of the monomer and initiator solutions a variety of different molecular weights can be rapidly synthesized within several minutes, using one setup. Additionally, a comparison of the influence of the two different mixing devices—an interdigital micromixer (SIMM-V2) leading to laminar mixing and a tangential four-way jet mixi…

Multicomponent solid dispersion a new generation of solid dispersion produced by spray-drying

2020

Abstract The term “multicomponent solid dispersion” is widely used in recent literature to describe solid formulations consisting of a special excipient's mixture and active molecules finely dispersed. However, this term has not yet been defined. In this review, we aimed to improve the definition of multicomponent solid dispersions as a new generation of solid dispersions capable to improve both formulation issues and the therapeutic effect of the final dosage form. As it is well-known the use of solid dispersions to improve drug dissolution rate and solubility, this review describes the field of solid dispersions as well as the formulation strategies available for their production. In part…

Molecular Iodine for a General Synthesis of Binary and Ternary Inorganic and Hybrid Organic-inorganic Iodide Nanocrystals

2018

We report the synthesis of various binary and ternary inorganic and hybrid organic–inorganic iodide nanocrystals (NCs) starting from molecular iodine (I2). The synthesis described herein utilizes a reaction between I2 and oleylamine, which results in oleylammonium iodide, an iodide precursor that can be directly used in the preparation of iodide-based NCs. The generality of the synthesis was demonstrated by synthesizing KI, RbI, CsI, AgI, CsPbI3, FAPbI3, Cs4PbI6, Cs3Bi2I9, FA3Bi2I9, and RbAg4I5 NCs. Furthermore, the syntheses are facile and are carried out in vials heated on a hot plate in air. They exhibit not only narrow size distributions, but also, in the case of lead-based perovskites …

Stable Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells Using Hyperbranched Polymer Electrolyte

2021

The choice of an adequate electrolyte is a fundamental aspect in polymer light-emitting electrochemical cells (PLECs) as it provides the in situ electrochemical doping and influences the performance of these devices. In this study, a hyperbranched polymer (Hybrane DEO750 8500) blended with a Li salt is used as a novel electrolyte in state-of-the-art Super Yellow (a polyphenylenevinylene) based LECs. Due to the desirable properties of the hyperbranched polymer and the homogeneous and smooth films that it forms with the emitting polymer, PLEC with excellent electroluminescent properties are obtained using a pulsed current bias scheme. The devices are very stable, with lifetimes in excess of 2…

Microbiological and ageing performance of polyhydroxyalkanoate-based multilayer structures of interest in food packaging

2014

Polyhydroxyalkanoates undergo crystallization during film processing and storage. In this paper, the physico–chemical ageing properties of multilayer structures based on a commercial polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and a polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate copolymer with 3% valerate content (PHBV3), containing a nanostructured zein interlayer, were analysed. The microbiological safety of the films was also evaluated by monitoring the growth of an inoculum of Listeria monocytogenes over time. Polyethyleneglycol (PEG) was added to PHBV3 films to facilitate handling as the PHBV3 mutlilayer systems (without plasticizer) cracked during film-formation. Crystallinity, thermal, mechanical, barrier and optica…
