Dynamical Scaling in Polymer Solutions Investigated by the Neutron Spin-Echo Technique
1979
Chain dynamics in polymer solutions was investigated by means of the recently developed neutron spin echo spectroscopy. — By this technique, it was possible for the first time to verify unambiguously the scaling predictions of the Zimm model in the case of single chain behaviour and to observe the cross over to many chain behaviour. The segmental diffusion of single chains exhibits deviations from a simple exponential law, indicating the importance of memory effects.
Removal of TEX vapours from air in a peat biofilter: influence of inlet concentration and inlet load
2006
This paper presents the results of the study of the removal of toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene (TEX) by biofiltration using a commercial peat as filter-bed material. Runs with a single organic compound in air, and with the mixture of TEX in air, were carried out for at least 55 days in laboratory-scale reactors inoculated with a conditioned culture. The influence of organic compound inlet load and of gas flow rate on the biofilter's performance was studied, including relatively high values of pollutant inlet concentration (up to 4.3 gC m−3 for ethylbenzene, 3.2 gC m−3 for toluene, and 2.7 gC m−3 for o-xylene). Results obtained show maximum elimination capacities of 65 gC m−3 h−1 for o-x…
High-energy radiation processing, a smart approach to obtain PVP-graft-AA nanogels
2014
Abstract Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-grafted-acrylic acid biocompatible nanogels (NGs) were prepared using an exiting industrial-type electron accelerator and setups, starting from semi-dilute aqueous solutions of a commercial PVP and the acrylic acid monomer. As a result, NGs with tunable size and structure can be obtained quantitatively. Sterility was also imparted at the integrated dose absorbed. The chemical structure of the NGs produced was confirmed through Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The molecular and physico-chemical properties of NGs, such as the hydrodynamic dimensions and surface charge densities, for various polymer and monomer concentrations in the irradiate…
On new chemical reactions of polymers
1968
Three major areas of work present themselves to a chemist who is concerned with polymer materials namely: synthesis and degradation of polymers; structure analysis of natural and synthetic polymers; and chemical transformations of polymers. Although these three fields are very closely related, I wish to concern myself only with the last of them.

Alkene epoxidations catalysed by Mo(VI) supported on Merrifield's polymer
1999
High conversion and epoxide selectivity from alkenes is achieved with tert-butyl hydroperoxide and a polystyrene-grafted Mo(VI) catalyst, with no noticeable leaching of Mo from the support.
Synthesis and radical polymerization of novel methacrylates with mesoionic 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-3-ium-4-olates as photosensitive components
2001
New polymerizable mesoionic 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-3-ium-4-olates 5a-f have been synthesized using tosylated 2-hydroxymethyl methacrylate and various thioureas and malonic acids. Radical polymerization of the mesoionic derivatives 5a, c, d, e with AIBN as initiator resulted in soluble polymers, which were used for the preparation of photosensitive films.

Theoretical predictions from a non-linear model based on the free volume concept, which were previously tested only with a molten polymer, are presented and compared with literature data of solid polyethylene. The agreement is good both when a steady state is reached in the experimentally explored times and when, on the contrary, the data do not show it.
Basis for the Preparative Fractionation of a Statistical Copolymer (SAN) with Respect to Either Chain Length or Chemical Composition
2003
The possibilities to fractionate copolymers with respect to their chemical composition on a preparative scale by means of the establishment of liquid/liquid phase equilibria were studied for random copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN). Experiments with solutions of SAN in toluene have shown that fractionation does in this quasi-binary system, where demixing results from marginal solvent quality, take place with respect to the chain length of the polymer only. On the other hand, if phase separation is induced by a second, chemically different polymer, one can find conditions under which fractionation with respect to composition becomes dominant. This opportunity is documented for th…

The major new developments in electron crystallography and high resolution imaging of organic molecules are discussed. The aim is to show that the recent rapid advances in computer technology have made it possible to analyze molecules at a level or resolution which was impossible less than a decade ago, thus bringing the concept of molecular design to produce specific physical properties much nearer to realization
