Physico-chemical state influences in vitro release profile of curcumin from pectin beads

2014

International audience; Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound with diverse effects interesting to develop health benefit products but its formulation in functional foods or in food supplement is hampered by its poor water solubility and susceptibility to alkaline conditions, light, oxidation and heat. Encapsulation of curcumin could be a mean to overcome these difficulties. In this paper, curcumin was encapsulated by ionotropic gelation method in low methoxyl pectin beads associated with different surfactants: Solutol®, Transcutol® and sodium caseinate. After encapsulation, physico-chemical properties of encapsulated curcumin such as its solubility, physical state, tautomeric forms and encaps…

Interface Solid-State Reactions in La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/Ce0.8Sm0.2O2 and La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/BaCe0.9Y0.1O3 Disclosed by X-ray Microspectroscopy

2019

The stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface is a critical issue in solid-oxide cells working at high temperatures, affecting their durability. In this paper, we investigate the solid-state chemical mechanisms that occur at the interface between two electrolytes (Ce0.8Sm0.2O2, SDC, and BaCe0.9Y0.1O3, BCY) and a cathode material (La0.8Sr0.2MnO3, LSM) after prolonged thermal treatments. Following our previous work on the subject, we used X-ray microspectroscopy, a technique that probes the interface with submicrometric resolution combining microanalytical information with the chemical and structural information coming from space-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In LSM/BCY, the …

Seed layer technique for high quality epitaxial manganite films

2016

We introduce an innovative approach to the simultaneous control of growth mode and magnetotransport properties of manganite thin films, based on an easy-to-implement film/substrate interface engineering. The deposition of a manganite seed layer and the optimization of the substrate temperature allows a persistent bi-dimensional epitaxy and robust ferromagnetic properties at the same time. Structural measurements confirm that in such interface-engineered films, the optimal properties are related to improved epitaxy. A new growth scenario is envisaged, compatible with a shift from heteroepitaxy towards pseudo-homoepitaxy. Relevant growth parameters such as formation energy, roughening tempera…

Chemical stability of the magnetic oxide EuO directly on silicon observed by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy

2011

We present a detailed study of the electronic structure and chemical state of high-quality stoichiometric EuO and O-rich ${\mathrm{Eu}}_{1}{\mathrm{O}}_{1+x}$ thin films grown directly on silicon without any buffer layer using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES). We determine the EuO oxidation state from a consistent quantitative peak analysis of $4f$ valence band and $3d$ core-level spectra. The results prove that nearly ideal, stoichiometric, and homogeneous EuO thin films can be grown on silicon, with a uniform depth distribution of divalent Eu cations. Furthermore, we identify the chemical stability of the EuO/silicon interface from Si $2p$ core-level photoemission. This work…

Orbital mapping of carbon thin films by XANES-spectromicroscopy

2000

Abstract A laterally resolved micro-XANES study (X-ray absorption near edge structure) of amorphous carbon, hydrogen terminated CVD-diamond (100) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) is presented. The results were obtained by means of a photoemission electron microscope. Using this technique the well-known spectral features of carbon in its different chemical states (sp 2 , sp 3 ) could be recorded. The sp 2 /sp 3 content of the films was extracted from the spectra. Images, taken at X-ray energies corresponding to maxima (π*, C–H*) of the unoccupied density of states in these spectra, map the lateral distribution of the different orbitals at the sample surface. This study revealed …

Interfacial reaction between deposited molybdenum and TiO2(110) surface: role of the substrate bulk stoichiometry

2004

Abstract The interfacial reaction between deposited molybdenum and three different TiO2(1 1 0) substrates (a bulk and surface stoichiometric TiO2; a bulk stoichiometric and surface reduced crystal; a bulk and surface slightly reduced crystal) was investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES). While the interfacial reaction is not a function of the substrate at room temperature (in any case, molybdenum layers grow with oxygen dissolved in), this study clearly reveals a strong effect of the substrate bulk stoichiometry on the chemical state of the deposit after annealing up to 750 °C whereas the substrate surface stoichiome…

Solid-state compatibility of Ca:LaNbO4 with perovskite cathodes: Evidences from X-ray microspectroscopy

2022

The solid-state compatibility between calcium-doped lanthanum niobate and three perovskite cathode materials was investigated using two X-ray microbeam techniques, micro X-ray fluorescence and micro X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The cathode powders (lanthanum strontium ferrite, either cobalt or copper-doped, and lanthanum strontium cobaltite) in contact with the dense electrolyte pellet were annealed at 1150 degrees C for 12-144 h to simulate the effect of thermal stresses due to fabrication and long-term operation. As a result, several interdiffusion phenomena were then observed on the bilayer cross-sections: in particular, the chemical state and coordination environment of calcium, iron,…

Surface Study of Pumice Supported Nickel Catalysts Used in the Hydrogenation of CO

1998

A series of pumice supported nickel catalysts used in the CO hydrogenation reaction were characterised by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the XPS peaks have shown the effect of the calcination conditions on the chemical state of the nickel before hydrogenation and the particle size of the metal after reduction. Calcination at high temperature determined enrichment of sodium ions on the surface of the support and also on the metal particles. After exposure to the gas mixture CO/H2, formation of nickel carbides and other carbon species was checked. The correlation found between the surface atomic ratio Na/Si and the activity and selectivity of the ca…

Unravelling the Photocatalytic Behavior of All-Inorganic Mixed Halide Perovskites: The Role of Surface Chemical States

2019

Within the most mesmerizing materials in the world of optoelectronics, mixed halide perovskites (MHPs) have been distinguished because of the tunability of their optoelectronic properties, balancing both the light-harvesting efficiency and the charge extraction into highly efficient solar devices. This feature has drawn the attention of analogous hot topics as photocatalysis for carrying out more efficiently the degradation of organic compounds. However, the photo-oxidation ability of perovskite depends not only on its excellent light-harvesting properties but also on the surface chemical environment provided during its synthesis. Accordingly, we studied the role of surface chemical states …
