Molecular biology, China and the West

2000

More than 15 years ago, in November 1985, I travelled to China for the first time. I joined a symposium on developmental biology in the Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology (CBI), organised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max‐Planck‐Gesellschaft in Germany. The symposium was meant to provide perspectives for the future of the Max Planck Guest Laboratory, just founded in the CBI. When I attended, I did not anticipate that my visit to Shanghai would initiate a long‐term commitment to China. I did not even expect to return to China in the near future. But early in 1987, my colleague Uli Schwarz from the Max Planck Institute of Developmental Biology in Tubingen, who was and still is in…

A review on the phytopharmacological studies of the genus Polygala

2020

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance The genus Polygala, the most representative genus of the Polygalaceae family, comprises more than 600 species from all over the world of which around 40 are distributed in China, some of them, being used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine system. Aim of the review We intend to discuss the current knowledge about the traditional uses, and the newest phytochemical and pharmacological achievements with tentative elucidation of the mechanism of action on the genus Polygala covering the period 2013–2019 to provide a scientific support to the traditional uses, and to critically analyze the reported studies to obtain new insights for further researches. Between Solid America and Fragile Chinatown in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior

2021

The article traces mixed affiliations of the narrator of Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior (1976), permanently split between the world of Chinatown and broader American society outside Chinatown, both places crucial for the narrator in the on-going process of subjectivity construction. While both of these worlds constantly interpellate her, each of them entails a fair measure of hindrance and empowerment. The article undermines the criticism leveled at Kingston’s The Woman Warrior by a section of the Chinese American community represented primarily by Frank Chin. Chin accused Kingston of pandering to white tastes and white readers’ expectations of Chinese American authors. That, acco…

Using Chinese in China - challenges and opportunities : a case study of three Finnish sojourners

2016

Despite the growing attention on interaction between language learners/sojourners and host community, there has been little research on second language (L2) using experience by adopting case study approach, by which each individual’s voice is valued. Grounded in sociocultural theory (SCT), the present study explores challenges and opportunities of international sojourners when they use Chinese in China by investigating three Finnish sojourners’ experiences in using Chinese. Coleman’s concentric circles model is adopted to illustrate sojourners’ different language choices and reasons with compatriots, international people and host community. Narratives and interview data are analyzed and dis…

Project-based learning in the Chinese heritage language course/class in Finnish comprehensive education

2023

With the trend of global mobility and immigration, the Finnish government has been promoting integration and multiculturality since 1990. According to the Finnish National Agency for Education (FNAE), Heritage Language (oma äidinkieli) lessons aim to protect and develop immigrant students’ competencies in their heritage languages and cultures. This article shares a pilot 4-week PBL (Project-based Learning) module for a group of advanced Chinese language learners. It discusses the opportunities and challenges during the PBL and suggests possible improvements. nonPeerReviewed

10 Finnish business actors' perceptions of their Chinese business partners and key personnel

2012

The market impacts caused by globalization and the internationalization of companies are requiring the ability to operate in demanding, diverse and changing business environments but also requiring the consideration of differing cultural norms. This study will explore the perceptions of a number of Finnish business actors who have worked and conducted business with Chinese business actors and personnel. The empirical part of this thesis is based on a qualitative study as a research approach. To this end, thematic, semi structured face-to-face interviews have been conducted in Helsinki and Espoo. The ten interviews’ themes concern (1) sources of misunderstanding which are identified and cons…

Autobiogrāfiskie motīvi ķīniešu imperatoru dzejā (no Haņ līdz Cjin dinastijai)

2021

Bakalaura darbā “Autobiogrāfiskie motīvi ķīniešu imperatoru dzejā (no Haņ līdz Cjin dinastijai)” tiek analizēta ievērojamāko ķīniešu Haņ līdz Cjin dinastiju imperatoru-literātu dzeja un tajā esošas autobiogrāfiskas iezīmes.

Distinct Recognition of Collagen Subtypes by α1β1 and α2β1Integrins

2000

Two integrin-type collagen receptors, α1β1 and α2β1, are structurally very similar. However, cells can concomitantly express the both receptors and they might have independent functions. Here, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, which lack endogenous collagen receptors, were transfected with either α1 or α2 integrin cDNA. Cells were allowed to adhere to various collagen types and their integrin function was tested by observing the progression of cell spreading. The cells expressing α1β1 integrin could spread on collagen types I, III, IV, and V but not on type II, while α2β1 integrin could mediate cell spreading on collagen types I-V. Type XIII is a transmembrane collagen and its interaction …
