Natural Products Derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine as Novel Inhibitors of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor
2010
The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) has become an important molecular target in cancer therapy. Various small molecules and therapeutic antibodies targeting EGFR family members have been developed during recent years and are established in clinical oncology. However, increasing clinical application of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors has resulted in the development of resistance to EGFR-targeting drugs due to the selection of EGFR-mutated variants. This phenomenon forced the search for novel EGFR inhibitors with activity towards EGFR-mutant tumors. This review describes recent achievements in natural products derived from medicinal plants as novel EGFR inhibitors.
Activity of Artemisinin-Type Compounds Against Cancer Cells
2012
Clinical Oncology strives for complete remission of patients with cancer, but still crusades against multidrug resistance of various cancers. Scientists and clinicians have been challenged to identify new potent anticancer compounds with new targeting strategies. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) provides a large spectrum of medicinal plants containing many biocompounds that possess anticancer activities. These represent a source of molecules that may have antiproliferative effects on a variety of cancers.
Introduction of Cytochrome P-450 Genes into V79 Chinese Hamster Cells to Generate New Mutagenicity Test Systems
1989
Usually, cultivated cells have poor capabilities to metabolize promutagens and procarcinogens. This is particularly true for cells that grow fast and have a high cloning efficiency, as is the case with V79 Chinese hamster cells. For this reason, these cells are being extensively used in mutagenicity tests. But, due to the fact that particularly these cells lack cytochrome P-450 activities, promutagens and procarcinogens have to be incubated with an exogenous metabolizing system, e.g. liver homogenate preparations, in order to generate reactive metabolites. These extracellularly generated metabolites are then given to V79 cells in order to check for their potency to mutate the chromosomal DN…
Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) for molecular targeted therapies of tumours.
2009
Scientific progress in genetics, cell and molecular biology has greatly ameliorated our comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms of neoplastic transformation and progression. The rapidly advancing identification of molecular targets in human cancers during the last decade has provided an excellent starting point for the development of novel therapeutics. A huge variety of potential molecular targets have been identified, many of which are already in the market for therapeutic purposes. It is now becoming possible to target pathways and/or molecules that are crucial in maintaining the malignant phenotype. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is often considered as alternative or…

My review of Jacob Edmond's volume underlines the continuous attention of the Author towards the possibility of overcoming the binary opposition that characterizes the Western way of analysis also when even taking into consideration a poetic work.
A dynamic life-cycle model for the provisioning of software testing services
2014
Information and communications technology (ICT)-enabled international sourcing of software-intensive systems and services (eSourcing) is a powerful strategy for managing businesses more effectively. China is becoming a superpower for eSourcing service provisioning, but most Chinese providers are small- or medium-sized and leverage the mediated eSourcing model, delivering services to foreign ICT clients who interface with end-clients onshore. This model restricts the providers to low-value projects. This paper probes eSourcing of software testing services within the Chinese market because testing is one of the best ICT services small- and medium-sized providers can provide to develop domain …

Modeling the relationship between rapid automatized naming and literacy skills across languages varying in orthographic consistency
2015
The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to contrast the prominent theoretical explanations of the rapid automatized naming (RAN)-reading relationship across languages varying in orthographic consistency (Chinese, English, and Finnish) and (b) to examine whether the same accounts can explain the RAN-spelling relationship. In total, 304 Grade 4 children (102 Chinese-speaking Taiwanese children, 117 English-speaking Canadian children, and 85 Finnish-speaking children) were assessed on measures of RAN, speed of processing, phonological processing, orthographic processing, reading fluency, and spelling. The results of path analysis indicated that RAN had a strong direct effect on reading flue…
