Abstract Vaccination against tumor Ags may become a promising treatment modality especially in cancer types where other therapeutic approaches fail. However, diversity of tumors requires that a multitude of Ags become available. Differential expression in normal vs cancerous tissues, both at the mRNA and the protein level, may identify Ag candidates. We have previously compared transcripts from squamous cell lung cancer and normal lung tissue using differential display analysis, and found a transcript that was overexpressed in malignant cells and was identical with the calcium-activated chloride channel 2 (CLCA2) gene. Thermal potential of ion-exchange membranes and its application to thermoelectric power generation

The low efficiency and high price of thermoelectric semiconductors has generated interest in unconventional forms of thermoelectric materials. In this article, ionic thermoelectricity has been studied with commercial ion-exchange membranes for different aqueous 1:1 electrolytes. The theory of thermal membrane potential has been derived taking into account the ionic heats of transport, the non-isothermal Donnan potentials, the temperature polarization, and the thermally-induced concentration polarization of the electrolyte. Fat and salt contents affect the in-mouth temporal sodium release and saltiness perception of chicken sausages

In cooked meats, sodium chloride is involved in taste, texture and flavour release. So a reduction in the salt content may have an impact on overall perception and acceptability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of composition on sodium release and saltiness intensity in chicken sausages. The rheological properties of the sausages differed according to composition. Temporal sodium release and temporal saltiness intensity were evaluated by four selected subjects when eating sausages. Sewage Sludge Derived Materials for CO2 Adsorption

The study tried to contribute to solving two serious environmental issues: CO2 reducing and sewage sludge disposal. Thus, sewage-sludge-derived materials were obtained in order to be evaluated for CO2 adsorption capacity. Therefore, the char resulted after the sewage sludge pyrolysis was subjected to oxidation and chemical activation processes by using different quantities of alkaline hydroxide. Imaging synaptic zinc release in living nervous tissue

Zinc enriched neurons have a pool of synaptic vesicles which contain free or loosely-bound zinc ions. The movement of the vesicular zinc ions into the synaptic clefts has been previously studied by microdialysis, fluorescence postmortem staining for zinc and radioactive zinc isotope. In this study the zinc fluorescence probe N-6-metoxy-p-toluensulfonamide quinoline (TSQ) has been applied as a tracer of synaptic release of zinc ions. This fluorochrome permeates cell membranes and when exposed to living brain slices gives rise to a staining pattern similar to that seen with autometallography. Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for 1-propanol + water + lithium chloride at 100 kPa

Abstract Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for the ternary system 1-propanol+water+lithium chloride has been measured at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of lithium chloride to the solvent mixture produced an important salting-out effect over the alcohol and the azeotrope tended to be eliminated when the salt content increased, and two immiscible liquid phases were observed in a broad range of salt concentration. The experimental data sets were fitted with the electrolyte NRTL model and the parameters of Mock et al.’s model were estimated. Characteristics of haloethylene-induced acetonemia in rats.

A series of halogenated ethylenes (vinyl chloride, vinylidene fluoride,cis- andtrans-1,2-dichloroethylene, perchloroethylene) induces increased acetone exhalation in rats. Exposures of differently pre-treated rats to vinylidene fluoride suggest that a metabolite of the haloethylene must be envolved in eliciting this formation of acetone. This conclusion is based on (a) dependence of acetone exhalation on the concentration of vinylidene fluoride, (b) effect of inducing agents, (c) effect of pyrazol, a metabolic inhibitor, (d) effect of cysteine, (e) effect of hypoxia and (f) the time course of acetone exhalation.

The popularity of ionic liquids (ILs) has grown during the last decades in several analytical separation techniques. Consequently, the number of reports devoted to the applications of ILs is still increasing. This review is focused on the use of ILs (mainly imidazolium-based associated to chloride and tetrafluoroborate) as mobile phase additives in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In this approach, ILs just function as salts, but keep several kinds of intermolecular interactions, which are useful for chromatographic separations. Non-Centrosymmetric Tetrameric Assemblies of Tetramethylammonium Halides with Uranyl Salophen Complexes in the Solid State

Ditopic salophen-UO(2) receptors 1-4 and 7 co-crystallize with tetramethylammonium (TMA) chloride and fluoride salts producing good quality crystals amenable for X-ray diffraction characterization. The arrangement of the receptor and salt units in the crystal lattice is such that tetrameric ball-shaped assemblies are formed, where an inner cluster of four TMA cations are surrounded by an outer shell of four UO(2)-bound anions. These elaborate architectures, which occur in all cases, regardless of a certain degree of structural modification on the receptors, lead to lattices that belong to non-centrosymmetric (NCS) space groups.
