Social Choice in the Real World II: Cyclical Preferences and Strategic Voting in the Finnish Presidential Elections
1997
The empirical relevance of the theoretical results of social choice theory is still unclear. The most radical thesis, put forth by William Riker, is that politics is a highly unstable process, characterized by preference cycles and strategic voting. This article - a continuation of an earlier article published in this journal - examines the Finnish presidential election in 1925, 1931, 1937 and 1982. The conclusion is that preference cycle and strategic voting have had a significant impact in the discussed cases. The relevancy of the social choice approach and its relation to historical research are discussed.
Lo que hacen las mejores escuelas integradoras de alumnado inmigrante: un modelo para su análisis y prospectiva.
2016
Immigration is a phenomenon which has changed the social scene of all over the countries and has increased alongside a world becoming even more global. These social changes have generated new challenges in educational sphere focused on the integration of immigrant students and the intercultural education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the elements of educational attention to immigrant students defined in hosting policies for this group pertaining to educational institutions and national/international reference authors. To do this and based on a theoretical framework, the following phases in the development of research are addressed in the research: pre-analysis of documents, c…
The children's instruction in Sub-Saharan Africa
2011
This article deals with the various schooling of three francophone African countries. This article presents the resultants of three field surveys, during which ethnographic and participant observations, but also over 150 in depth interviews were led. After having described the educational provision in the three countries concerned, the article shed some light on the representations of school for parents of pupils. A specific focus is made on the schooling model corresponding to each school. That's how was measured the leeway of parents face to the schooling choice which is imposed, face to a plural educational provision which herald historic connations and hierarchical organisation.
Towards Axiomatic Basis of Inductive Inference
2001
The language for the formulation of the interesting statements is, of course, most important. We use first order predicate logic. Our main achievement in this paper is an axiom system which we believe to be more powerful than any other natural general purpose discovery axiom system. We prove soundness of this axiom system in this paper. Additionally we prove that if we remove some of the requirements used in our axiom system, the system becomes not sound. We characterize the complexity of the quantifier prefix which guaranties provability of a true formula via our system. We prove also that if a true formula contains only monadic predicates, our axiom system is capable to prove this formula…
Urban densities and economic analyse of residentials choices
2016
The thesis is focused on urban growth control challenge through the Compact City model and its key spatial characteristic: the density. This work deals both with a theoretical, methodological and empirical approach. First, we place ourselves in the theoretical framework of Urban Economic addressing agents’ location choices. We mobilize these theories to identify the key determinants of residential location (employment center, spatial amenities, housing’s service) and analyze the spatial organization that follows (dense or spread). This literature leads us to consider different types of density: structural density, population density and social density. This thesis highlights various methodo…
The effect of an eco-label on the booking decisions of air passengers
2022
Abstract In the last few years there has been an increasing attempt to find solutions on how to mitigate the environmental impacts of air travel. Behavioral change has hereby been identified as the measure with the most significant impact. One way to encourage behavioral change is the use of eco-labels. Eco-labels have, to date, received scant attention in the aviation industry, and their effect on air travel behavior is still largely unknown. This study explores the effect of an eco-label on the booking decisions of passengers. We conduct a stated choice experiment with 553 air passengers. Our findings show that providing passengers with an eco-label leads to behavioral change, as the labe…
The multichoice consistent value
2000
We consider multichoice NTU games, i.e., cooperative NTU games in which players can participate in the game with several levels of activity. For these games, we define and characterize axiomatically the multichoice consistent value, which is a generalization of the consistent NTU value for NTU games and of the multichoice value for multichoice TU games. Moreover, we show that this value coincides with the consistent NTU value of a replicated NTU game and we provide a probabilistic interpretation.
A heuristic method for estimating attribute importance by measuring choice time in a ranking task
2012
The evaluation of a product or service in terms of its attributes has been broadly studied in marketing, management and decision sciences. However, methods for finding important attributes have theoretical and practical limitations. The former are related to the selection of the most appropriate model; the latter are due to large number of variables that affect the specific experimental context. This study aims to present a new methodology that captures attribute preferences from a respondent and in particular, by using the choice time in a ranking task, it allows to indirectly obtain the importance weights for several tested attributes through a simple, fast and inexpensive procedure. More…
Lieu de résidence et discrimination salariale
2010
A strategic needs perspective on operations outsourcing and other inter-firm relationships
2013
Abstract This paper considers two issues: the formation of inter-firm relationships, and the choice of governance form. These have been widely investigated in both the strategic management and operations management fields. This paper contributes to the literature in three ways. First, we address why firms enter inter-firm relationships by hypothesizing that managers enter them to pursue three strategic needs, that is: efficiency/effectiveness, knowledge/learning, and global market access. Our first contribution evidences the relationship between the above strategic needs and a number of operational objectives that managers normally pursue in an inter-firm relationship. Second, we hypothesiz…
