Phenotypic variation in hyperandrogenic women influences the findings of abnormal metabolic and cardiovascular risk parameters.

In hyperandrogenic women, several phenotypes may be observed. This includes women with classic polycystic ovary syndrome (C-PCOS), those with ovulatory (OV) PCOS, and women with idiopathic hyperandrogenism (IHA), which occurs in women with normal ovaries. Where other causes have been excluded, we categorized 290 hyperandrogenic women who were seen consecutively for this complaint between 1993 and 2004 into these three subgroups. In T2DM, the elevated blood glucose level promotes formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The receptor for AGEs (RAGE) is a type I membrane-protein and is also able to import amyloid-beta (Abeta) from the blood across the blood-brain-barrier into the brain. Platelet membrane fluidity and platelet membrane lipid pattern in essential hypertension

In a group of subjects with essential hypertension platelets were studied in resting conditions: platelet membrane fluidity was measured with the fluorescent probe 1.4-(trimethylamino)-phenyl-4-phenylhexatriene (TMA-DPH), platelet membrane cholesterol/phospholipid ratio was evaluated separating the membrane lipids with column chromatography, and platelet membrane individual phospholipids were determined using two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography. For the first time it has been proven that cholest-4-ene-3-one is an endogenous constituent of adrenal tissue. Concentrations of cholestenone in quartered rat adrenals after 3 hours of in vitro incubation were comparable to those of progesterone. However, from specific radioactivities of tissue cholesterol and progesterone and from those of tissue cholestenone and progesterone after incubations with either 4-14C-cholesterol or 4-14C-cholestenone it has been concluded that, at best, cholestenone plays a minimal role as a C27-intermediate of corticosteroid biosynthesis.
