ERP qualification exploiting waveform, spectral and time-frequency infomax

The present contribution briefly introduces an event related potential (ERP) detector. The specified detector includes three kinds of features of ERP. They are the ERP waveform feature, ERP spectral feature and ERP time-frequency feature respectively. According to these characteristics, two parameters are defined to reflect the timing feature of ERP. The mismatch negativity (MMN) is taken as the example to design an exact qualification detector. The Stability-Plasticity Dilemma: Investigating the Continuum from Catastrophic Forgetting to Age-Limited Learning Effects

The stability-plasticity dilemma is a well-know constraint for artificial and biological neural systems. The basic idea is that learning in a parallel and distributed system requires plasticity for the integration of new knowledge, but also stability in order to prevent the forgetting of previous knowledge. Too much plasticity will result in previously encoded data being constantly forgotten, whereas too much stability will impede the efficient coding of this data at the level of the synapses. However, for the most part, neural computation has addressed the problems related to excessive plasticity or excessive stability as two different fields in the literature.
Does letter position coding depend on consonant/vowel status? Evidence with the masked priming technique

Recently, a number of input coding schemes (e.g., SOLAR model, SERIOL model, open-bigram model, overlap model) have been proposed that capture the transposed-letter priming effect (i.e., faster response times for jugde-JUDGE than for jupte-JUDGE). In their current version, these coding schemes do not assume any processing differences between vowels and consonants. However, in a lexical decision task, Perea and Lupker (2004, JML; Lupker, Perea, & Davis, 2008, L&CP) reported that transposed-letter priming effects occurred for consonant transpositions but not for vowel transpositions. Because of its regularity, it is relatively easy to learn to read and spell in Finnish. However, a specific hurdle in spelling acquisition seems to be the doubling of consonant letters. In this study on consonant letter doubling spelling in Finnish children (91 Grade 1 and 191 Grade 2 children), we asked two questions. How do illiterate adults react to metalinguistic training?

The present study focuses on the capacity of illiterate adults to master three different metalinguistic tasks: judgment of phonological length of words, initial consonant deletion, and lexical segmentation of sentences. Illiterates’ performance, during a pre-test and after training, was compared with that of literates and partial illiterates (adults at the beginning of the process of acquiring literacy) who received the same training. Probabilistic interpretation of the Calderón problem

In this paper, we use the theory of symmetric Dirichlet forms to give a probabilistic interpretation of Calderon's inverse conductivity problem in terms of reflecting diffusion processes and their corresponding boundary trace processes. This probabilistic interpretation comes in three equivalent formulations which open up novel perspectives on the classical question of unique determinability of conductivities from boundary data. We aim to make this work accessible to both readers with a background in stochastic process theory as well as researchers working on deterministic methods in inverse problems.
13C nuclear magnetic resonance study of some phosphinolipids: Assignments and conformational studies

13C chemical shifts and 31P, 13C spin-spin coupling constants are reported for six model phosphinates and eight synthetic phosphinolipids. The complex spectra of the synthetic phosphinolipids could be assigned from increments and couplings derived from the model compounds. Based on these investigations the 3J(PC) couplings of 7–15 Hz indicate a preferential trans orientation of the respective head-group carbon relative to the phosphorus. This behaviour is similar to that of natural phosphatidylcholine lipids.
The relaxant effects of cromakalim (BRL 34915) on human isolated airway smooth muscle

Cromakalim (BRL 34915) is a potassium channel opener with therapeutic potential as a bronchodilator in asthma. Cromakalim (0.1–30 μmol/l) inhibited the spontaneous tone of human isolated bronchi n a concentration-related manner being nearly as effective as isoprenaline or theophylline. The order of relaxant potencies (expressed as -log10 IC50 mol/l; mean ±SEM) was isoprenaline (7.29 ± 0.27; n = 8) > cromakalim (5.89 ± 0.12; n = 7) > theophylline (4.07 ±0.13; n = 10). In human bronchi where tone had been raised by addition of histamine (0.1 mmol/l), acetylcholine (0.1 mmol/l) or leukotriene D4 (LTD4, 0.1 μmol/l), the relaxant effect of cromakalim was substantially reduced. Data from the general population suggest that habitual exercise decreases bronchial responsiveness, but the possible role of exercise in asthmatics is undefined. The leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast decreases bronchial responsiveness and exercise-induced symptoms in asthmatic children.
