Heat wave occurrences over Senegal during spring: regionalization and synoptic patterns.

2020

18 pages; International audience; Based on 12 Senegalese stations of the Global Summary of the Day (GSOD) database (1979–2014), heat waves (HW) are defined for each station in spring (March–April–May, the hottest season in Senegal) as the daily maximum temperature (Tx), minimum temperature (Tn), or average apparent temperature of the day (AT), exceeding the corresponding 95% mobile percentile for at least three consecutive days. A hierarchical cluster analysis used to regionalize HW in these 12 stations is applied to simultaneous occurrences of daily temperature peaks over their 95% mobile percentiles. Three homogeneous zones of four stations each are identified (Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3),…

La moneda romana imperial y su circulación en Hispania

2002

This paper deals with coins in circulation in Roman Spain during the Imperial Period (I-IV cent. AD). New archaeological data and hoards indicate that coins survived and remained in use much longer than the periods into which they are traditionally grouped according to the date of minting. During this period the coins used in ancient Spain proceeded entirely from abroad reflecting the vicissitudes of Roman state production, with some notable provincial and urban characteristics.

The Coupled Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems of the Restless Aluto Caldera, Ethiopia

2020

Seismicity can be used to better understand interactions between magma bodies, hydrothermal systems and their host rocks—key factors influencing volcanic unrest. Here, we use earthquake data to image, for the first time, the seismic velocity structure beneath Aluto, a deforming volcano in the Main Ethiopian Rift. Traveltime tomography is used to jointly relocate seismicity and image 3D P- and S-wave velocity structures and the ratio between them (V P/V S). At depths of 4–9 km, the seismicity maps the top of a large low velocity zone with high V P/V S, which we interpret as a more ductile and melt-bearing region. A shallow (<3 km) hydrothermal system exhibits low seismic velocities and ve…

Geochemical fingerprints of brannerite (UTi 2 O 6 ): an integrated study

2020

AbstractBrannerite (UTi2O6) is among the major uranium-bearing minerals found in ore deposits, however as it has been long considered as a refractory mineral for leaching it is currently disregarded in ore deposits. Brannerite is found in a variety of geological environments with the most common occurrences being hydrothermal and pegmatitic. On the basis of scanning electron microscopy observations coupled with electron probe micro-analyses and laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer analyses, this study describes the morphological features and the major- and trace-element abundances of brannerite samples from five hydrothermal and five pegmatitic localities across the w…

Co-reductive fabrication of carbon nanodots with high quantum yield for bioimaging of bacteria

2018

A simple and straightforward synthetic approach for carbon nanodots (C-dots) is proposed. The strategy is based on a one-step hydrothermal chemical reduction with thiourea and urea, leading to high quantum yield C-dots. The obtained C-dots are well-dispersed with a uniform size and a graphite-like structure. A synergistic reduction mechanism was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The findings show that using both thiourea and urea during the one-pot synthesis enhances the luminescence of the generated C-dots. Moreover, the prepared C-dots have a high distribution of functional groups on their surface. In this work, C-dots proved …

O Brasil na rota das migrações internacionais qualificadas espanholas no século XXI

2018

In order to understand recent migration, it is crucial to analyze the migratory modalities such as skilled international migration to Brazil, especially considering the ongoing transnational economic processes and their effects on the corresponding societies. Therefore, this article seeks to understand how the migratory dynamics of highly skilled Spanish professionals to the country are established taking into account the theoretical contribution of the circulation of brains and the category of knowledge workers. For this purpose, information from Brazilian?s Ministry of Labor is used on labor authorizations, financial contributions and insertion in the formal market in Spain; as well as da…

Fe-doped Beta zeolite from organotemplate-free synthesis for NH3-SCR of NOx

2016

Two types of Beta zeolites, one from organotemplate-free synthesis with a Si/Al ratio of 9 and the other from a commercial one with a Si/Al ratio of 19, were employed here to dope Fe for NH3-SCR of NOx. Fe-Beta (Si/Al = 9) exhibits much higher activity than Fe-Beta (Si/Al = 19), especially at low-temperature regions (<250 °C). In addition, it also exhibits better hydrothermal stability as compared with Fe-Beta (Si/Al = 19), which demonstrates that it is a promising SCR catalyst with good activity as well as hydrothermal stability. The correlation between the quantitative calculation of the content of isolated Fe3+ in Beta zeolites and the NO conversion rate at 150 °C shows a linear relation…

Nitrate removal microbiology in woodchip bioreactors : a case-study with full-scale bioreactors treating aquaculture effluents

2020

Woodchip bioreactors are viable low-cost nitrate (NO3−) removal applications for treating agricultural and aquaculture discharges. The active microbial biofilms growing on woodchips are conducting nitrogen (N) removal, reducing NO3− while oxidizing the carbon (C) from woodchips. However, bioreactor age, and changes in the operating conditions or in the microbial community might affect the NO3− removal as well as potentially promote nitrous oxide (N2O) production through either incomplete denitrification or dissimilatory NO3− reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Here, we combined stable isotope approach, amplicon sequencing, and captured metagenomics for studying the potential NO3− removal rates, a…

Hydrothermally Synthesized Strontium Peroxyapatite

2015

The current research focuses on peroxide ion incorporation in the structure of strontium hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) by exposure to H2O2 ina closed hydrothermal vessel under mild conditions at 130 to 170 °C. Peroxide enriched strontium apatite (SrPerAp) was characterized for structure by X-Ray diffraction, for peroxide content- by permanganometric titration and then viewed by SEM. This study continued from previous work that used 30%H2O2 and showed a higher included peroxide content after processing with 50% H2O2 at 130 °C 70% of the theoretical peroxide content in apatitic channels of strontium apatite. This is the highest peroxide content incorporated to date and employs a lower temperature th…
