Resonant laser spectroscopy of localized excitons in monolayer WSe_2
2016
Coherent quantum control and resonance fluorescence of few-level quantum systems is integral for quantum technologies. Here we perform resonance and near-resonance excitation of three-dimensionally confined excitons in monolayer WSe2 to reveal near-ideal single-photon fluorescence with count rates up to 3 MHz. Using high-resolution photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy of the localized excitons, we uncover a weakly fluorescent exciton state ∼5 meV blue shifted from the ground-state exciton, providing important information to unravel the precise nature of quantum states. Successful demonstration of resonance fluorescence paves the way to probe the localized exciton coherence in two-dime…
Coupled-cluster methods including noniterative corrections for quadruple excitations
2005
A new method is presented for treating the effects of quadruple excitations in coupled-cluster theory. In the approach, quadruple excitation contributions are computed from a formula based on a non-Hermitian perturbation theory analogous to that used previously to justify the usual noniterative triples correction used in the coupled cluster singles and doubles method with a perturbative treatment of the triple excitations (CCSD(T)). The method discussed in this paper plays a parallel role in improving energies obtained with the full coupled-cluster singles, doubles, and triples method (CCSDT) by adding a perturbative treatment of the quadruple excitations (CCSDT(Q)). The method is tested fo…
Role of Ce3+ as sensitizer for the infrared luminescence of phosphosilicate Er/Yb doped glasses
2012
The luminescence properties of the Yb/Er-doped phosphosilicate preforms used for the design of active optical fibers were investigated under a tunable laser excitation from ultraviolet to infrared domain. We demonstrated that codoping the glass matrix with Ce3+ ions strongly influences the infrared emission associated with Er3+ ions, it enhances the energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ ions, and it provides an additional ultraviolet excitation channel for the emission of both Yb3+ and Er3+ ions. The excitation/emission pathways are discussed on the basis of models proposed in literature for other systems.
Elicitation and evaluation of zoom gestures for touchless interaction with desktop displays
2019
Touchless gestural interaction has been widely studied and adopted in many contexts. Furthermore, the growing availability of low-cost enabling devices, such as Kinect or Leap Motion, boosted up the interest in such interaction both for commercial and scientific purposes, both for large public displays and for personal displays. The problem of choosing the right touchless gesture for the right action is thus still an open issue, depending on several aspects, such as context, purpose, users' culture, etc. In this work, we first present the results of a gesture elicitation study that allowed us to identify a set of touchless gestures for performing zoom actions while interacting with desktop …
Testi arabi di Sicilia. Un esempio di disputa linguistica
2021
Neck Pain and Rehabilitation
2016
Neck pain is par excellence one of the most common disorders of the musculoskeletal system, second only to low back pain. It constitutes 40 % of all backache. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain of cervical origin coming from an area between the nuchal line and another imagi-nary line that passes through the lower end of the spinous process of the first thoracic vertebra and the sagittal plans tangent to the side edges of the neck. This definition considers therefore posterior pain which in turn can be divided into high pain, up to C3, and lower pain, down from C4. Also, as all diseases, it can be divided into acute and chronic neck pain, merely according…
The boundaries of citation and allusion: Shakespeare in Davide ferrario's Tutta colpa di giuda (2008), Alfredo Peyretti's Moana (2009), and Connie Ma…
2018
The paper focuses on the following samples of media material: Davide Ferrario’s Tutta colpa di Giuda (2008), a film set in an Italian prison that references Hamlet; Alfredo Peyretti’s Moana (2009), which is about the life of Italian porn star Moana Pozzi, and incorporates lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream; a 2001 episode of Crime Scene Investigation entitled “Caged” that makes citations from Othello interact with an investigation into what looks like a murder; and Connie Macatuno’s Rome and Juliet (2006), a Filipino experimental film that turns Shakespeare’s tragic love story into a lesbian romance. The paper argues that “Shakespeare” is a fragmentary but significant presence in each of …
Diffusion of point defects in shocked molecular crystals
2005
The dynamic response of a molecular crystal containing defects to shock wave loading is modeled and the resulting diffusion of point defects is simulated. It is shown that diffusion proceeds not only via the stress assisted diffusion, which is point defect diffusion in a stress field, also known as the Gorsky effect, but also through defect diffusion in the field of inertial forces. The method for modeling diffusion of point defects in shocked solids is developed. It is shown that diffusion in the inertial field significantly exceeds the stress diffusion in organic molecular crystals. Interplay between stress-assisted and inertial diffusion leads to the separation of light particles from he…
Raman spectroscopy study of β-irradiated silica glass
2003
International audience; Natural and synthetic silica glass samples with different OH content have been submitted to β-irradiation at different doses from 106 to 5 × 109 Gy in a Van de Graaff accelerator. Structural changes under irradiation have been analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The main findings are: (i) a decrease of the Si–O–Si angular dispersion and the average Si–O–Si angle as a function of dose and (ii) an increase of number of three-membered SiO4 ring concentration during irradiation. These results show therefore that purely electronic excitation from β-irradiation induces in a-SiO2 small but significant structural changes of the SiO4 membered ring statistics (size and dispersion)…
