Effect of high-intensity pulsed electric fields processing and conventional heat treatment on orange-carrot juice carotenoids.

Liquid chromatography (LC) was the method of choice for quantification of carotenoids (including geometrical isomers) to evaluate the effects of high-intensity pulsed electric field (HIPEF), a nonthermal preservation method, with different parameters (electric field intensities and treatment times), on an orange−carrot juice mixture (80:20, v/v). In parallel, a conventional heat treatment (98 °C, 21 s) was applied to the juice. HIPEF processing generally caused a significant increase in the concentrations of the carotenoids identified as treatment time increased. HIPEF treatment at 25 and 30 kV/cm provided a vitamin A concentration higher than that found in the pasteurized juice. Keywords: …

Bitter compounds such as limonoids, which consist of oxygenated triterpenoid compounds, are present in citrus fruits. Removal of limonoids from citrus fruits is of considerable importance for the citrus industry. Researchers have removed limonoids from citrus fruits and citrus byproducts using organic solvents. The objective of this study was to use a simpler method to remove limonoids from citrus byproducts.
In vitro rescue of zygotic embryos of sour orange, Citrus aurantium L., and their detection based on RFLP analysis

Embryo development in vivo has been studied in four Citrus aurantium L. polyembryonic genotypes. Seeds were collected 65, 85, 105, 125 and 220 days after pollination (DAP). None of the immature seeds harvested 65 and 85 DAP contained visible embryos. A single embryo at a more advanced developmental stage was observed in the central position at the micropylar apex of the embryo sac in about 74% of seeds harvested at 105 DAP, while at 125 and 220 DAP the majority of seeds had two or more embryos at the same developmental stage crowded together. Essential oils as multi-target compounds for novel food safety strategies
This research work has been developed in the context of the potencial applications of essential oils as multi-target compounds for novel food safety strategies, such as active packaging technologies. Essential oils are aromatic oils derived from plants and usually extracted by hydrodistillation when intended to be used in food. There is an increasing interest in the antimicrobial properties of essential oils due to the possibility of using them to replace ‘synthetic’ preservatives in food or, in general, to reduce viable numbers of pathogens along the food chain.

Citrus fruits are the main fruits of the Mediterranean diet and have been long recognized for their beneficial effects on human health. Observational studies have shown a significant association between dietary flavonoid intake and reduced risk of cardiovascular and malignant diseases. The beneficial effects of citrus fruits on human health appear to be due to their high content in vitamins, minerals and fibers. The essential oil from the leaves of a Citrus interspecific somatic hybrid obtained by symmetric protoplast fusion between ‘Milam’ lemon [purported sexual hybrid of C. Jambhiri Lush (×) C. sinensis] and ‘Femminello’ lemon (C. limon L. Burm f.) has been characterized by steam distillation GC–MS analysis and its composition compared with that of the corresponding oils obtained from the parent plants.
