A simple procedure to improve the pressure evaluation in hydrodynamic context using the SPH

In literature, it is well know that the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method can be affected by numerical noise on the pressure field when dealing with liquids. This can be highly dangerous when an SPH code is dynamically coupled with a structural solver. In this work a simple procedure is proposed to improve the computation of the pressure distribution in the dynamics of liquids. Such a procedure is based on the use of a density diffusion term in the equation for the mass conservation. This diffusion is a pure numerical effect, similar to the well known artificial viscosity originally proposed in SPH method to smooth out the shock discontinuities. An operator view on alliances in politics

We introduce the concept of an {\em operator decision making technique} and apply it to a concrete political problem: should a given political party form a coalition or not? We focus on the situation of three political parties, and divide the electorate into four groups: partisan supporters of each party and a group of undecided voters. We consider party-party interactions of two forms: shared or differing alliance attitudes. Our main results consist of time-dependent decision functions for each of the three parties, and their asymptotic values, i.e., their final decisions on whether or not to form a coalition.

Controlling laser assisted radiative recombination with few-cycle laser pulses

We report on the radiative recombination of a free electron with a hydrogenic ion in the presence of a few-cycle pulses. It has been shown that the main features of the emission spectra may be described in the framework of a semiclassical model in which the recombination is viewed as a two-step process. The spectra width of the emitted photon energy is practically confined in a range of values in which the emission is classically allowed. Moreover, it has been found that spectra width can be controlled by varying the carrier envelope phase and/or the pulse peak intensity.

La Gipsoteca del Dipartimento Culture e Società dell’Università di Palermo, di recente riallestita, possiede tra i suoi calchi due gessi di grande interesse. Si tratta delle repliche delle versioni miniaturizzate dei fregi del Partenone e del Tempio di Bassae che lo scultore scozzese John Henning realizzò a Londra, nei primi decenni dell’Ottocento. Le riproduzioni furono inizialmente incise su piccole tavole di ardesia, dalle quali potevano essere ricavati calchi in gesso, destinati alla vendita. Phase matters: responding to and learning about peripheral stimuli depends on hippocampal θ phase at stimulus onset.

Hippocampal θ (3–12 Hz) oscillations are implicated in learning and memory, but their functional role remains unclear. We studied the effect of the phase of local θ oscillation on hippocampal responses to a neutral conditioned stimulus (CS) and subsequent learning of classical trace eyeblink conditioning in adult rabbits. High-amplitude, regular hippocampal θ-band responses (that predict good learning) were elicited by the CS when it was timed to commence at the fissure θ trough (Trough group). Simulation of the dynamics of hard ellipsoids

We study a system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids by molecular dynamics simulations, changing both the aspect-ratio X-0 (X-0 = a/b, where a is the length of the revolution axis and b is the length of the two other axes) and the packing fraction phi. We calculate the translational and rotational mean squared displacements, the translational D-trans and the rotational D-rot diffusion coefficients and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi - X-0 plane. Bilateral Monopoly: A Contribution by Francesco Ferrara

In this paper, we propose an interpretation of the application of "cost of reproduction" of Francesco Ferrara to the exchange between two agents to highlight its relevance for the theory of bilateral monopoly. In the Teoria delle Mercedi (1863), Ferrara gives a numerical example to explain price determination in the exchange between one buyer and one seller. Here, this example is translated into a mathematical model that reproduces the fundamental issues of the neoclassical debate on the indeterminacy of price in the Cournot model (1938), and anticipates the solutions proposed by Edgeworth (1881) at the end of this debate.

A High-Resolution Penalization Method for large Mach number Flows in the presence of Obstacles

International audience; A penalization method is applied to model the interaction of large Mach number compressible flows with obstacles. A supplementary term is added to the compressible Navier-Stokes system, seeking to simulate the effect of the Brinkman-penalization technique used in incompressible flow simulations including obstacles. We present a computational study comparing numerical results obtained with this method to theoretical results and to simulations with Fluent software. Our work indicates that this technique can be very promising in applications to complex flows.

Generalized Alomari functionals

We consider a generalized form of certain integral inequalities given by Guessab, Schmeisser and Alomari. The trapezoidal, mid point, Simpson, Newton-Simpson rules are obtained as special cases. Also, inequalities for the generalized Alomari functional in terms of the $n$-th order modulus, $n=\overline{1,4}$, are given and applied to some known quadrature rules.

PT-symmetry and Schrödinger operators. The double well case

We study a class of $PT$-symmetric semiclassical Schrodinger operators, which are perturbations of a selfadjoint one. Here, we treat the case where the unperturbed operator has a double-well potential. In the simple well case, two of the authors have proved in [6] that, when the potential is analytic, the eigenvalues stay real for a perturbation of size $O(1)$. We show here, in the double-well case, that the eigenvalues stay real only for exponentially small perturbations, then bifurcate into the complex domain when the perturbation increases and we get precise asymptotic expansions. The proof uses complex WKB-analysis, leading to a fairly explicit quantization condition.
