Multivariate nonparametric estimation of the Pickands dependence function using Bernstein polynomials

2017

Abstract Many applications in risk analysis require the estimation of the dependence among multivariate maxima, especially in environmental sciences. Such dependence can be described by the Pickands dependence function of the underlying extreme-value copula. Here, a nonparametric estimator is constructed as the sample equivalent of a multivariate extension of the madogram. Shape constraints on the family of Pickands dependence functions are taken into account by means of a representation in terms of Bernstein polynomials. The large-sample theory of the estimator is developed and its finite-sample performance is evaluated with a simulation study. The approach is illustrated with a dataset of…

Bioclimatic atlas of the terrestrial Arctic

2023

AbstractThe Arctic is the region on Earth that is warming at the fastest rate. In addition to rising means of temperature-related variables, Arctic ecosystems are affected by increasingly frequent extreme weather events causing disturbance to Arctic ecosystems. Here, we introduce a new dataset of bioclimatic indices relevant for investigating the changes of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems. The dataset, called ARCLIM, consists of several climate and event-type indices for the northern high-latitude land areas > 45°N. The indices are calculated from the hourly ERA5-Land reanalysis data for 1950–2021 in a spatial grid of 0.1 degree (~9 km) resolution. The indices are provided in three subsets…

Peptide Metal–Organic Frameworks for Enantioselective Separation of Chiral Drugs

2017

We report the ability of a chiral Cu(II) 3D MOF based on the tripeptide Gly-L-His-Gly (GHG) for the enantioselective separation of metamphetamine and ephedrine. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that chiral recognition is linked to preferential binding of one of the enantiomers as result of either stronger or additional H-bonds with the framework that lead to energetically more stable diastereomeric adducts. Solid phase extraction (SPE) of a racemic mixture by using Cu(GHG) as extractive phase permits isolating more than 50% of the (+)-ephedrine enantiomer as target compound in only four minutes. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first example of a MOF capable of separating ch…

Syntheses and Crystal Structures of two Non-isostructural Copper(I) Chloride and Bromide π-Complexes with (2-Allylthio)benzimidazole of 1:1 Compositi…

2002

By alternating-current electrochemical synthesis crystals of C10H10N2S · CuCl (I) and C10H10N2S · CuBr (II) π-complexes have been obtained and structurally investigated. The symmetry of I is orthorhombic, space group Pbcn, a = 16.799(2) A, b = 7.302(2) A, c = 18.214(2) A, V = 2234.1(9) A3, Z = 8 for C10H10N2S · CuCl composition, R = 0.0635, Rw = 0.0683 for 970 reflections. Crystals of II are monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 7.4439(5) A, b = 17.6952(3) A, c = 17.0420(7) A, s = 94.662(2)°, V = 2237.4(2) A<3, Z = 4 for (Cu · C10H10N2S)2Br2 composition, R = 0.0463 for 4123 reflections. (2-Allylthio)benzimidazole moiety acts in both structures discussed as a bidentate ligand, chelating the cop…

Cosmic microwave background constraints on secret interactions among sterile neutrinos

2017

Secret contact interactions among eV sterile neutrinos, mediated by a massive gauge boson $X$ (with $M_X \ll M_W$), and characterized by a gauge coupling $g_X$, have been proposed as a mean to reconcile cosmological observations and short-baseline laboratory anomalies. We constrain this scenario using the latest Planck data on Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, and measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). We consistently include the effect of secret interactions on cosmological perturbations, namely the increased density and pressure fluctuations in the neutrino fluid, and still find a severe tension between the secret interaction framework and cosmology. In fact, taking i…

Revisiting cosmological bounds on sterile neutrinos

2014

We employ state-of-the art cosmological observables including supernova surveys and BAO information to provide constraints on the mass and mixing angle of a non-resonantly produced sterile neutrino species, showing that cosmology can effectively rule out sterile neutrinos which decay between BBN and the present day. The decoupling of an additional heavy neutrino species can modify the time dependence of the Universe's expansion between BBN and recombination and, in extreme cases, lead to an additional matter-dominated period; while this could naively lead to a younger Universe with a larger Hubble parameter, it could later be compensated by the extra radiation expected in the form of neutri…

Recent Borexino results and prospects for the near future

2015

The Borexino experiment, located in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, is an organic liquid scintillator detector conceived for the real time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos. The data taking campaign phase I (2007 - 2010) has allowed the first independent measurements of 7Be, 8B and pep fluxes as well as the first measurement of anti-neutrinos from the earth. After a purification of the scintillator, Borexino is now in phase II since 2011. We review here the recent results achieved during 2013, concerning the seasonal modulation in the 7Be signal, the study of cosmogenic backgrounds and the updated measurement of geo-neutrinos. We also review the upcoming measurements from phase…

Agricultural and Biotechnology Patents as an Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change: A Regional Analysis of European Farmer’s Efficiency

2022

This chapter analyses the effect of innovation encouraged by climate change challenges on European farmers’ technical efficiency. Using the stochastic frontier approach, we estimate the impact of agri-cultural patents on farmers’ technical efficiency by taking into account both unobservable heterogeneity and heteroscedasticity in the inefficiency term. Our findings suggest that European farmers remain quite far from the maximum frontier and irrespective of the country in which they reside; farmers who innovate are more efficient than those who do not. Thus, the inefficiency of agricultural agents in the European context leaves space for policies that incentivise firms to adopt climate chang…

Spatio-temporal behaviour of the deep chlorophyll maximum in Mediterranean Sea: Development of a stochastic model for picophytoplankton dynamics

2013

In this paper, by using a stochastic reaction-diffusion-taxis model, we analyze the picophytoplankton dynamics in the basin of the Mediterranean Sea, characterized by poorly mixed waters. The model includes intraspecific competition of picophytoplankton for light and nutrients. The multiplicative noise sources present in the model account for random fluctuations of environmental variables. Phytoplankton distributions obtained from the model show a good agreement with experimental data sampled in two different sites of the Sicily Channel. The results could be extended to analyze data collected in different sites of the Mediterranean Sea and to devise predictive models for phytoplankton dynam…
