The sequence of open and closed prefixes of a Sturmian word

2017

A finite word is closed if it contains a factor that occurs both as a prefix and as a suffix but does not have internal occurrences, otherwise it is open. We are interested in the {\it oc-sequence} of a word, which is the binary sequence whose $n$-th element is $0$ if the prefix of length $n$ of the word is open, or $1$ if it is closed. We exhibit results showing that this sequence is deeply related to the combinatorial and periodic structure of a word. In the case of Sturmian words, we show that these are uniquely determined (up to renaming letters) by their oc-sequence. Moreover, we prove that the class of finite Sturmian words is a maximal element with this property in the class of binar…

Enumeration and Structure of Trapezoidal Words

2013

Trapezoidal words are words having at most $n+1$ distinct factors of length $n$ for every $n\ge 0$. They therefore encompass finite Sturmian words. We give combinatorial characterizations of trapezoidal words and exhibit a formula for their enumeration. We then separate trapezoidal words into two disjoint classes: open and closed. A trapezoidal word is closed if it has a factor that occurs only as a prefix and as a suffix; otherwise it is open. We investigate open and closed trapezoidal words, in relation with their special factors. We prove that Sturmian palindromes are closed trapezoidal words and that a closed trapezoidal word is a Sturmian palindrome if and only if its longest repeated …

Open and Closed Prefixes of Sturmian Words

2013

A word is closed if it contains a proper factor that occurs both as a prefix and as a suffix but does not have internal occurrences, otherwise it is open. We deal with the sequence of open and closed prefixes of Sturmian words and prove that this sequence characterizes every finite or infinite Sturmian word up to isomorphisms of the alphabet. We then characterize the combinatorial structure of the sequence of open and closed prefixes of standard Sturmian words. We prove that every standard Sturmian word, after swapping its first letter, can be written as an infinite product of squares of reversed standard words.

A novel exact representation of stationary colored Gaussian processes (fractional differential approach)

2010

A novel representation of functions, called generalized Taylor form, is applied to the filtering of white noise processes. It is shown that every Gaussian colored noise can be expressed as the output of a set of linear fractional stochastic differential equations whose solution is a weighted sum of fractional Brownian motions. The exact form of the weighting coefficients is given and it is shown that it is related to the fractional moments of the target spectral density of the colored noise.

Automatic landmark detection and 3D Face data extraction

2017

Abstract This paper contributes to 3D facial synthesis by presenting a novel method for parameterization using Landmark Point detection. The approach presented aims at improving facial recognition even in varying facial expressions, and missing data in 3D facial models. As such, the prime objective was to develop an automatically embedded process that can detect any frontal face in 3D face recognition systems, with face segmentation and surface curvature information. Using the hybrid interpolation method, experiments on facial landmarks were performed on 4950 images from Face Recognition Grand Challenge database (FRGC). Distinctive facial landmarks from the nose–tips, Limits mouth and two e…

Regulation of cuticular hydrocarbon profile maturation by Drosophila tanning hormone, bursicon, and its interaction with desaturase activity

2016

International audience; Shortly after emergence the exoskeleton (cuticle) of adult insects is rapidly expanded, hardened (sclerotized), and pigmented (melanized). In parallel with this process, the oenocytes, which are large polyploid cells located below the abdominal epidermis, secrete onto the cuticle a cocktail of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHs) and waxes. These improve the waterproofing of the cuticle, and also provide important chemosensory and pheromonal cues linked with gender, age, and species differentiation. The hardening and pigmentation of the new cuticle are controlled by the neurohormone, bursicon, and its receptor, encoded by the DLGR2 receptor, rickets (rk); by contrast, little…

Symmetric logarithmic derivative of Fermionic Gaussian states

2018

In this article we derive a closed form expression for the symmetric logarithmic derivative of Fermionic Gaussian states. This provides a direct way of computing the quantum Fisher Information for Fermionic Gaussian states. Applications ranges from quantum Metrology with thermal states and non-equilibrium steady states with Fermionic many-body systems.

Credit Risk Disclosure Practices in the Annual Financial Reporting of Large Italian Banks

2019

Risk disclosure in banking is particularly important for the efficacy of market discipline, the assessment of bank performance, the efficiency of the financial market, and the overall stability of the financial system. The European banking union and the financial crisis have enhanced the strategic role of credit risk disclosure in banking. The topic of this chapter is the evaluation of credit risk disclosure practices in banks’ annual financial reporting. The empirical research is conducted on a sample of ten large Italian banks. The authors employ content analysis and provide a hybrid scoring model for the assessment of credit risk disclosure. The chapter provides empirical findings which …

The Impact of Corporate Governance on Internet Financial Reporting in Concentrated Ownership Companies

2013

In the context of agency theory this study investigates the effect of corporate governance (CG) on Internet Fianncial Reporting disclosure (IFR) in concentrated ownership envitonment, such as Italy. We hypothesize that IFR may be explain in term of increasing trasparency in order to defen minority shareholder interest, so we predict, and find, a positive association between the extent of a firm's IFR and its CG and a negative assocaition between IFR and ownership structure. Abstract. This study investigates, upon agency theory, the effect of corporate governance (CG) on Internet Financial Reporting disclosure (IFR) in an ownership concentrated environment, such as Ita-ly. We hypothesize tha…

Intellectual capital disclosure in sustainability reports

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the level and the quality of voluntary disclosures of Intellectual Capital (IC) in the sustainability reports on a sample of Italian listed companies. The authors conducted an analysis of twelve sustainability reports for two years (2009-2010). These are related to six firms selected among the most capitalized 37 Italian listed companies. To investigate the “level of disclosure,” the authors identified the presence of IC information, while to evaluate the “IC quality,” they constructed a voluntary disclosure index based on content analysis. IC information disclosure is more likely present in sustainability reports of firms with a higher levels of ap…
