Configuration mixing and total muon capture rates

1973

Abstract We modify the Primakoff closure approximation to get independence on the mean neutrino energy and energy weighted sum rules are used for the corrective terms. A near model - independent discussion is then possible, and the total rates are shown to be a very sensitive tool to investigate configuration mixing of the target. Wild discrepancies with experiment would arise if the limit of pure jj or LS couplings are used for 12 C, whereas the Cohen-Kurath wave function gives a very good result.

On total muon capture rates and the average neutrino energy

1973

A method of avoiding the uncertainty associated with the average neutrino energy nu in the usual closure approach to muon capture rates is discussed. Instead of neglecting the kinematic dependence on each particular channel, the partial capture rate is approximated by a first-order expansion around nu . After the sum over the final states is performed, the result is quite independent of the specific value of nu . Application to /sup 3/He, /sup 6/Li and closed-shell nuclei is given, as an effective test of the nuclear models used. (17 refs).

Mass spectrometry and decay spectroscopy of isomers across the Z=82 shell closure

2013

Recent results from a measurement campaign studying the isomerism in neutron-deficient Tl isotopes are presented. The measurements make use of a nuclear spectroscopy setup coupled to the high-resolution Penning-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at CERN's radioactive ion-beam facility ISOLDE. The mass values of 190,194Tl are improved and a mass-spin-state assignment is carried out. An additional mass measurement of the grandparent nuclide 198At allows the deduction of the spin-state ordering in 190Tl. As a result, the excitation energies of the isomers in both Tl isotopes are determined for the first time to Eex(194Tl)=260(15) keV and E ex(190Tl)=89(12) keV. Furthermore, this allows anchoring …

Bloch analysis of finite periodic microring chains

2005

We apply Bloch analysis to the study of finite periodic cascading of microring resonators. Diagonalization of the standard transfer matrix approach not only allows to find an exact analytic expression for transmission and reflection, but also to derive a closed form solution for the field in every point of the structure. To give more physical insight we analyze the main features of the transmission resonances in a finite chain and we give some hints for their experimental verification

The Anti-de Sitter Gott Universe: A Rotating BTZ Wormhole

1999

Recently it has been shown that a 2+1 dimensional black hole can be created by a collapse of two colliding massless particles in otherwise empty anti-de Sitter space. Here we generalize this construction to the case of a non-zero impact parameter. The resulting spacetime, which may be regarded as a Gott universe in anti-de Sitter background, contains closed timelike curves. By treating these as singular we are able to interpret our solution as a rotating black hole, hence providing a link between the Gott universe and the BTZ black hole. When analyzing the spacetime we see how the full causal structure of the interior can be almost completely inferred just from considerations of the conform…

New insights into black bodies

2012

Planck's law describes the radiation of black bodies. The study of its properties is of special interest, as black bodies are a good description for the behavior of many phenomena. In this work a new mathematical study of Planck's law is performed and new properties of this old acquaintance are obtained. As a result, the exact form for the locus in a color-color diagrams has been deduced, and an analytical formula to determine with precision the black body temperature of an object from any pair of measurements has been developed. Thus, using two images of the same field obtained with different filters, one can compute a fast estimation of black body temperatures for every pixel in the image…

Binary evolution of PSR J1713+0747

2007

PSR J1713+0747 is a binary millisecond radio pulsar with a long orbital period (Porb ∼ 68 d) and a very low neutron star mass (M NS = 1.3 ± 0.2 M⊙). We simulate the evolution of this binary system with an accurate numerical code, which keeps into account both the evolution of the primary and of the whole binary system. We show that strong ejection of matter from the system is fundamental to obtain a mass at the end of the evolution that is within 1 - σ from the observed one, but propeller effects are almost negligible in such a system, where the accretion rate is always near to the Eddington limit. We show that there are indeed two mechanisms can account for the amount of mass loss from the…

High precision astrometry with closure constraints: The triplet 1803+784/1928+738/2007+777

1997

Abstract Improvements in the technique of high precision differential astrometry in VLBI based on the use of triangles of radio sources are reported. Such geometry provides new constraints by taking advantage of “closure”. Results on the relative separations (ranging from 4.6 to 6.8°) of the sources in the triangle 1803+784/1928+738/2007+777 from ionosphere-free delays are shown and “sky closure” verified. A comparison with previous results on the pair 1928+738/2007+777 is also presented.

The different fates of a low-mass X-ray binary - I. Conservative mass transfer

2003

We study the evolution of a low mass x-ray binary coupling a binary stellar evolution code with a general relativistic code that describes the behavior of the neutron star. We assume the neutron star to be low--magnetized (B~10^8 G). In the systems investigated in this paper, our computations show that during the binary evolution the companion transfers as much as 1 solar mass to the neutron star, with an accretion rate of 10^-9 solar masses/yr. This is sufficient to keep the inner rim of the accretion disc in contact with the neutron star surface, thus preventing the onset of a propeller phase capable of ejecting a significant fraction of the matter transferred by the companion. We find th…

El “Aula del Cel”: astronomy approaching high school

2005

The “Aula del Cel” is a project carried out by the Astronomical Obsevatory of the University of Valencia, Spain. It offers high-school teachers a tool for teaching Astronomy to 10 to 17 year-old students. Different programs, experiments, and audiovisual presentations have been prepared by a team formed both by professional astronomers and teachers, and are offered in a format chosen to suit each particular age and curriculum group. Special sessions have been designed for students with special needs (for example blind or autistic children) in close contact with the pedagogical teams responsible for their education. Nearly three thousand students have already visited the “Aula del Cel” over t…
