Bridges, channels and Arnold's invariants for generic plane curves

Abstract We define sums of plane curves that generalize the idea of connected sum and show how Arnol'd's invariants behave with respect to them. We also consider the inverse process of decomposition of a curve and as an application, obtain a new method that reduces considerably the amounts of computation involved in the calculation of Arnold's invariants.

Polynomial functors and polynomial monads

We study polynomial functors over locally cartesian closed categories. After setting up the basic theory, we show how polynomial functors assemble into a double category, in fact a framed bicategory. We show that the free monad on a polynomial endofunctor is polynomial. The relationship with operads and other related notions is explored.

Uncountable existentially closed groups in locally finite group classes

In this paper, will always denote a local class of locally finite groups, which is closed with respect to subgroups, homomorphic images, extensions, and with respect to cartesian powers of finite -groups. Examples for x are the classes L ℐπ of all locally finite π-groups and L(ℐπ ∩ ) of all locally soluble π-groups (where π is a fixed set of primes). Some algebras of symmetric analytic functions and their spectra

AbstractIn the spectrum of the algebra of symmetric analytic functions of bounded type on ℓp, 1 ≤ p < +∞, and along the same lines as the general non-symmetric case, we define and study a convolution operation and give a formula for the ‘radius’ function. It is also proved that the algebra of analytic functions of bounded type on ℓ1 is isometrically isomorphic to an algebra of symmetric analytic functions on a polydisc of ℓ1. We also consider the existence of algebraic projections between algebras of symmetric polynomials and the corresponding subspace of subsymmetric polynomials.

Probing Quantum Frustrated Systems via Factorization of the Ground State

The existence of definite orders in frustrated quantum systems is related rigorously to the occurrence of fully factorized ground states below a threshold value of the frustration. Ground-state separability thus provides a natural measure of frustration: strongly frustrated systems are those that cannot accommodate for classical-like solutions. The exact form of the factorized ground states and the critical frustration are determined for various classes of nonexactly solvable spin models with different spatial ranges of the interactions. The enterotoxin from Clostridium difficile (ToxA) is one of the causative agents of the antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis. In cultured monolayer cells ToxA exhibits cytotoxic activity to induce disassembly of the actin cytoskeleton, which is accompanied by morphological changes. ToxA-induced depolymerization of actin filaments is correlated with a decrease in the ADP-ribosylation of the low molecular mass GTP-binding Rho proteins (Just, I., Selzer, J., von Eichel-Streiber, C., and Aktories, K. Rho prevents apoptosis through Bcl-2 expression: Implications for interleukin-2 receptor signal transduction

Here we describe a Rho-mediated apoptosis suppression pathway driven by Bcl-2 expression in the interleukin (IL)-4- or IL-2-dependent murine T cell line TS1 alpha beta. IL-2, but not IL-4, induces Bcl-2 expression through RhoA activation which is inhibited by the specific Rho family inhibitor, Clostridium difficile Toxin B, as well as by a dominant negative RhoA mutant. Using transient transfections of RhoA mutants tagged with the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein, we show that a constitutively active RhoA mutant induces Bcl-2 expression and prevents apoptosis upon IL-4 withdrawal.
