Energy Efficient Resource Allocation for OFDMA Two-Way Relay Networks with Channel Estimation Error
2015
In this work, we consider the practical issues of resource allocation problem in OFDMA two-way relay networks: the inaccuracy of channel-state information (CSI) available to the transmitters. Instead, only the estimated channel status is known by the transmitters. In this context, a joint optimization of subcarrier pairing and allocation, relay selection and transmit power allocation is formulated in the OFDMA two-way amplify-and-forward relay networks. Moreover, to ensure the Quality of Service (QoS) requirement, the energy consumption must be minimized without compromising the QoS. Therefore, by applying convex optimization techniques, energy efficient algorithms are developed with the ob…
Performance analysis of Alamouti coded OFDM systems over wideband MIMO car-to-car channels correlated in time and space
2014
In this paper, the performance of Alamouti coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over car-to-car (C2C) fading channels correlated in time and space is analyzed. Taking different geometrical scattering models into account, a generalized expression of the time-variant transfer function (TVTF) is derived for wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) C2C channels. We present a generalized expression for the bit error probability (BEP), which will be used to describe the performance of Alamouti coded OFDM systems over different types of C2C channel models, such as the rectangle model, the tunnel model, the street model, and the curve model. The effect of the maximu…
Analysis of compressor architectures in MOS current-mode logic
2010
This paper is concerned with the design and the comparison of different compressor architectures for high performance multipliers in MOS current-mode logic (MCML). More specifically, three architectures have been designed for 3-2, 4-2 and 5-2 compressors and two architectures for 7-2 compressors. The various implementations for each type of compressor have been compared one another. This investigation indicates that the architectures based exclusively on three-level MCML gates are the most suitable for MCML implementation in terms of speed, power consumption and area. Design guidelines are provided to improve compressor performance. All the compressors were designed in a TSMC 180nm CMOS tec…
ARIANNA: a smartphone-based navigation system with human in the loop
2014
In this paper we present a low cost navigation system, called ARIANNA, primarily designed for visually impaired people. ARIANNA (pAth Recognition for Indoor Assisted NavigatioN with Augmented perception) permits to find some points of interests in an indoor environment by following a path painted or sticked on the floor. The path is detected by the camera of the smartphone which also generates a vibration signal providing a feedback to the user for correcting his/her direction. Some special landmarks can be deployed along the path for coding additional information detectable by the camera. In order to study the practical feasibility of the ARIANNA system for human users that want to follow …
Packet loss recovery in an indoor Free Space Optics link using rateless codes
2014
Free Space Optics (FSO) systems present some important advantages if compared to Radio Frequency links, but they can be affected by several impairments that degrade the link quality and availability. In particular, due to temporary interruptions of the line-of-sight condition between the transmitter and the receiver, packet loss can occur during data transmission. In this work, we present an indoor Free Space Optics link, in which we have systematically generated interruptions of the beam. We demonstrate how the application of the most recent rateless codes, i.e., RaptorQ codes, can strongly improve the link quality by reducing packet loss. In particular, results show that the Packet Error …
Effect of Channel-Quality Indicator Delay on HSDPA Performance
2007
This paper evaluates the effect of the channel estimation inaccuracy on the performance of an HSDPA system. This study provides some results from system level simulations that have been conducted over a very complete dynamic simulator which models an HSDPA system full compliant with specifications. This emulator allows performing multi-user transmission and link adaptation with a limited modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection based on the channel quality indicator (CQI) modes. Many factors such as the user equipment (UE) speed, the employed scheduling algorithm or the traffic load have been considered in the assessment. Moreover the intrinsic constraints of a WCDMA system like HSDPA h…
Efficient pipeline FFT processors for WLAN MIMO-OFDM systems
2005
The most area-efficient pipeline FFT processors for WLAN MIMO-OFDM systems are presented. It is shown that although the R2/sup 3/SDF architecture is the most area-efficient approach for implementing pipeline FFT processors, RrMDC architectures are more efficient in MIMO-OFDM systems when more than three channels are used.
The design of measurement-based underwater acoustic channel simulators using the INLSA algorithm
2015
This paper utilizes the iterative nonlinear least square approximation (INLSA) algorithm for designing measurement-based wideband shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channel simulators. Measurement-based channel simulators are essential for the test, optimization, and performance analysis of UWA communication systems. The aim is to fit the time-variant channel impulse response (TVCIR) of the simulation model to that of the measured UWA channel. The performance of the designed UWA channel simulator is assessed by comparing the time-frequency correlation function (TFCF), the power delay profile (PDP), and the probability density function (PDF) of the channel envelope with the corresponding quan…
Robust Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) selection in LTE systems using reinforcement learning
2014
Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) in LTE networks is commonly employed to improve system throughput by ensuring more reliable transmissions. Most of existing AMC methods select the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) using pre-computed mappings between MCS indexes and channel quality indicator (CQI) feedbacks that are periodically sent by the receivers. However, the effectiveness of this approach heavily depends on the assumed channel model. In addition CQI feedback delays may cause throughput losses. In this paper we design a new AMC scheme that exploits a reinforcement learning algorithm to adjust at run-time the MCS selection rules based on the knowledge of the effect of previous AMC d…
