Air Pollution During Pregnancy and Childhood Cognitive and Psychomotor Development: Six European Birth Cohorts

Background: Accumulating evidence from laboratory animal and human studies suggests that air pollution exposure during pregnancy affects cognitive and psychomotor development in childhood. Hsp27 and Hsp70 in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: certainties vs doubts

Dear Editor, We read with great interest the work by Cui et al. (2015) in which they measured the levels of Hsp70 and Hsp27 in plasma and lymphocytes obtained from coal workers (CW) affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) alone or associated with pneumoconiosis (CWP). They found that Hsp70 levels were higher in plasma of COPD subjects affected by CWP compared to COPD subjects without CWP and to controls. There was no difference in Hsp70 levels between COPD without CWP and controls. Hsp70 levels in lymphocytes did not show differences among the three groups. Phylogenetic reconstruction of HCV genotype 1b dissemination in a small city centre: The Camporeale model

Several seroepidemiological population-based surveys carried out in Italy have shown a high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Camporeale (CP), a small Sicilian town with a 10.4% prevalence of HCV mostly genotype 1b, probably represents a specific context, since intravenous drug addiction, and sexual promiscuity are almost absent. In order to reconstruct the pattern of introduction and diffusion of HCV in this ecological niche, the NS5 genomic region of 72 HCV genotype 1 isolates (39 from CP and 33 collected throughout Sicily) was amplified and sequenced. Impairment of nasal mucociliary clearance after radiotherapy for childhood head cancer.

Background Radiotherapy of the head region in children is known to cause long-term sequelae, such as facial, dental, and ocular abnormalities. We investigated whether a decreased nasal mucociliary function occurs after radiotherapy of the head in children. Methods A saccharin/charcoal test was performed in 20 children treated with radiotherapy of the head and in 20 controls, age-matched and gender-matched. Results We found a decreased nasal mucociliary clearance (lower percentage of responses (p = 0083) and longer mucociliary transport times (p = .0001) in the patients compared with the controls. Multiplicity dependence of light (anti-)nuclei production in p–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV

The measurement of the deuteron and anti- deuteron production in the rapidity range −1 < y < 0 as a function of transverse momentum and event multiplicity in p–Pb collisions at √sNN= 5.02 TeV is presented. (Anti-)deuterons are identified via their specific energy loss dE/dxand via their time-of-flight. Their production in p–Pb collisions is compared to pp and Pb–Pb collisions and is discussed within the context of thermal and coalescence models. A study of densified biochar as carbon source in the silicon and ferrosilicon production

Abstract Biochar pellets were investigated as renewable reducing agents in substitution of coal and coke in the silicon and ferrosilicon production, where a high reactivity, good mechanical properties and low feedstock costs are appreciated. The usage of pyrolysis oil as binder was investigated as way to improve the quality of the pellets. Norway spruce biochar produced at 500, 800 and 1100 °C, was pelletized blended with pyrolysis oil and lignosulphonate. Mechanism of co-pyrolysis of coal-tar pitch with polyacrylonitrile

Abstract Co-pyrolysis of coal-tar pitch with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and PAN oxidized in air at 300 °C was studied as a possible way of manufacturing of carbonaceous materials enriched in nitrogen. The thermal behaviour of components and blends was evaluated by thermogravimetry and optical microscopy of solid residues. The transformation of nitrogen functional groups on co-treatment was monitored using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Abstract In this study, a novel three-dimensional micro-mechanical crystal-level model for the analysis of intergranular degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is presented.
