Synthesis and antibacterial activity of iron-hexacyanocobaltate nanoparticles.
2018
This paper deals with the synthesis and characterization of iron-hexacyanocobaltate (FeHCC) and its antibacterial properties. The nanoparticles were prepared by a facile co-precipitation technique. Crystal structure, particle morphology, and elemental composition were determined using X-ray Powder Diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Infrared Spectroscopy (IR). The antibacterial activity of the FeHCC nanoparticles was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as models for Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively, by bacterial counting method and microscopic visualization (TEM, FEG-SEM, and fluorescence micro…
Automatic Biological Cell Counting Using a Modified Gradient Hough Transform
2017
AbstractWe present a computational method for pseudo-circular object detection and quantitative characterization in digital images, using the gradient accumulation matrix as a basic tool. This Gradient Accumulation Transform (GAT) was first introduced in 1992 by Kierkegaard and recently used by Kaytanli & Valentine. In the present article, we modify the approach by using the phase coding studied by Cicconet, and by adding a “local contributor list” (LCL) as well as a “used contributor matrix” (UCM), which allow for accurate peak detection and exploitation. These changes help make the GAT algorithm a robust and precise method to automatically detect pseudo-circular objects in a microscop…
Nation-wide study of the occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in French soils using culture-based and molecular detection methods
2013
Identifiant HAL : hal-01120618; International audience; Soil is a potential reservoir of human pathogens and a possible source of contamination of animals, crops and water. In order to study the distribution of Listeria monocytogenes in French soils, a real-time PCR TaqMan assay targeting the phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (prs) gene of L. monocytogenes was developed for the specific detection and quantification of this bacterium within a collection of 1315 soil DNAs originated from the French Soil Quality Monitoring Network. The prs real-time PCR TaqMan assay was specific for L. monocytogenes and could quantify accurately down to 104L. monocytogenes per gram of dry soil. Among the …
Flow cytometric assay for estimating fungicidal activity of Amphotericin B in human serum
1992
We describe a simple and rapid bioassay for estimating fungicidal activity of Amphotericin B in human serum using flow cytometry. The method exploits the fact that Candida albicans damaged by Amphotericin B show a decrease in size and take up propidium iodide to exhibit a red fluorescence after deoxycholate treatment. These phenomena display characteristic dose dependencies, and their assessment permits serum fungicidal activity to be broadly grouped into three categories: (1) subfungicidal; (2) fungicidal; and (3) strongly fungicidal. In normal human serum, these three categories correspond to Amphotericin B concentrations of 0 less than or equal to 0.5 micrograms/ml, 0.75-1.5 micrograms/m…
In vivo efficacy of humanised intermittent versus continuous ceftazidime in combination with tobramycin in an experimental model of pseudomonal pneum…
2008
In this study, we compared the efficacy of ceftazidime (CAZ) intermittent versus continuous infusion with or without tobramycin (TOB) for the treatment of pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in rabbits. Treatments were humanised and mimicked intermittent CAZ (iCAZ) (2g three times daily), continuous CAZ (cCAZ) (4g once daily (qd)) and TOB (10mg/kg qd). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were 1mg/L and 4mg/L for TOB and CAZ, respectively. Bacterial efficacy in lungs was as follows: control, 9+/-0.6 colony-forming units (CFU)/g; TOB monotherapy, 8+/-0.5CFU/g; iCAZ monotherapy, 7.8+/-1.4CFU/g; cCAZ monotherapy, 8+/-0.4CFU/g (P = 0.005); and iCAZ+TOB, 8+/-0.5CFU/g; cCAZ+TOB, 7.2+/-…
Interactions in dual species biofilms between Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e and several strains of Staphylococcus aureus.
2008
International audience; Six environmental isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and one collection strain were investigated for their ability to form monospecies biofilms and dual species biofilms with Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e on stainless steel coupons. All isolates were able to grow as biofilms but their ability to form monospecies biofilms differed. The population of L. monocytogenes EGD-e in dual species biofilms was not affected by the presence of S. aureus isolates except for strain CIP 53.156. The effect of L. monocytogenes EGD-e on the population of S. aureus was strain dependent: S. aureus population either increased or decreased or was not affected in the presence of L. monocytoge…
Tyramine and phenylethylamine production among lactic acid bacteria isolated from wine.
2007
The ability of wine lactic acid bacteria to produce tyramine and phenylethylamine was investigated by biochemical and genetic methods. An easy and accurate plate medium was developed to detect tyramine-producer strains, and a specific PCR assay that detects the presence of tdc gene was employed. All strains possessing the tdc gene were shown to produce tyramine and phenylethylamine. Wines containing high quantities of tyramine and phenylethylamine were found to contain Lactobacillus brevis or Lactobacillus hilgardii. The main tyramine producer was L. brevis. The ability to produce tyramine was absent or infrequent in the rest of the analysed wine species.
Synthesis and antifungal activity of new N-isoxazolyl-2-iodobenzamides
1999
N-Isoxazolyl-2-iodobenzamides 3 and 9, with a benodanil-like structure, were synthesized by refluxing in acetic acid the corresponding benzotriazinones 2 and 8 with potassium iodide for 1 h with the aim to ascertain if they were active as fungicides against Phytophthora citricola Saw., Botrytis cinerea Pers., Rhizoctonia sp. and Alternaria sp. Among the tested iodo derivatives, compounds 3b and 9a possess interesting activities against the aforesaid fungal strains in several cases similar to that of benodanil I taken as reference drug.
Role of yeasts in table olive production
2008
Table olives are a traditional fermented vegetable of the Mediterranean countries, but their production and consumption are now spread all around the world. Yeasts can play a double role in this food. They are present throughout the fermentative process and it is generally accepted that they can produce compounds with important organoleptic attributes determining the quality and flavour of the final product. However, yeasts can also be spoilage microorganisms in olive fermentation/storage and packing causing gas pockets, swollen containers, cloudy brines and off-flavours and off-odours. Candida boidinii, Debaryomyces hansenii, Pichia anomala, P. membranifaciens, Rhodotorula glutinis and Sac…
Mould germination: data treatment and modelling.
2006
Abstract The objectives of this study were i/ to examine germination data sets over a range of environmental conditions (water activity, temperature) for eight food spoilage moulds, ii/ to compare the ability of the Gompertz equation and logistic function to fit the experimental plots, iii/ to simulate germination by assessing various distributions of the latent period for germination amongst a population of spores. Data sets (percentage germination, P (%), versus time, t) of Aspergillus carbonarius, Aspergillus ochraceus, Fusarium verticillioides, Fusarium proliferatum, Gibberella zeae, Mucor racemosus, Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium verrucosum were analysed. No correlation, or re…
