Geographic mosaic of selection by avian predators on hindwing warning colour in a polymorphic aposematic moth
2020
AbstractWarning signals are predicted to develop signal monomorphism via positive frequency-dependent selection (+FDS) albeit many aposematic systems exhibit signal polymorphism. To understand this mismatch, we conducted a large-scale predation experiment in four locations, among which the frequencies of hindwing warning coloration of aposematic Arctia plantaginis differ. Here we show that selection by avian predators on warning colour is predicted by local morph frequency and predator community composition. We found +FDS to be strongest in monomorphic Scotland, and in contrast, lowest in polymorphic Finland, where different predators favour different male morphs. +FDS was also found in Geo…
Modelling of Reflectance Spectra of Skin Phototypes III
2011
In dermatology, study of human skin colour is related to skin phototype (SPT) in which the Fitzpatrick's scale is the most used skin photo type classification. Assessment of skin response to UV for various reasons plays an important role in dermatology. This is however not easy to be performed because of two reasons. Firstly, skin areas may have different skin tone resulting in different reflectance spectra and secondly, different modalities may produce different reflectance spectra. We hypothesize that the underlying pattern of reflectance spectra must be similar regardless of the modalities use and the skin areas where it is obtained, for a particular person. An observational clinical stu…
Influence of storage and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on totqal antioxidant capacity of fruit beverages
2011
Eight fruit beverages containing grape, orange and apricot, with/without iron and/or zinc and with/without milk added were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (ORAC and TEAC methods), ascorbic acid content, and total polyphenols. The influence of cold storage (2-4 degrees C) during the product shelf-life (135 days) and antioxidant capacity after an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were evaluated. Antioxidant capacity for all beverages together increased significantly (p < 0.05) at the end of storage (16.4% and 12.8% for ORAC and TEAC, respectively), whereas ascorbic acid remained stable. Regarding in vitro digestion, antioxidant values of bioaccessible fractions of fruit beverages in…
Optimal design of viscoelastic tuned mass dampers for structures exposed to coloured excitations
2022
Dynamic interaction between primary and secondary structures can alter the response of buildings, bridges and other civil engineering structures to external stressors such as earthquakes and windstorms. TMDs (tuned mass dampers) are a well-known example of passive control devices that exploit this concept. A TMD consists of a secondary mass attached to the primary structure through a linear or nonlinear link. Various formulations exist to optimize the performance of TMDs, depending on the chosen criterion. Typically, the TMD is optimized considering the steady-state amplitude of motion of the primary structure, e.g., when subjected to monochromatic harmonic excitation (H∞ criterion) or whit…
Evolving management of adolescent varicocele
2008
Abstract Objective To review the evolution in indications for treatment and treatment modalities for adolescent varicocele at our centre, and evaluate the impact of varicocelectomy on final outcome. Patients and methods Between 1995 and 2006, we treated 242 left varicoceles. Preoperative assessment included clinical evaluation, measurement of testicular volumes, and colour-Doppler ultrasound (CDUS). A subinguinal varicocelectomy was performed in 124 patients (group A), and a laparoscopic non-artery-sparing Palomo procedure in the remaining 118 (group B). In group B patients, CDUS was also used to investigate the functional anatomy of varicocele, and all the veins found to be refluxing were …
THE INFLUENCE OF CHROMATIC ABERRATION ON DEMOSAICKING
2014
International audience; The wide deployment of colour imaging devices owes much to the use of colour filter array (CFA). A CFA produces a mosaic image, and normally a subsequent CFA demosaick-ing algorithm interpolates the mosaic image and estimates the full-resolution colour image. Among various types of optical aberrations from which a mosaic image may suffer, chromatic aberration (CA) influences the spatial and spectral correlation through the artefacts such as blur and mis-registration, which demosaicking also relies on. In this paper we propose a simulation framework aimed at an investigation of the influence of CA on demosaicking. Results show that CA benefits de-mosaicking to some ex…
Śląskie nazwy geograficzne motywowane nazwami kolorów
2021
The subject of the paper is Silesian geographical names motivated by colour terms. The analysis comprised Polish and German appellative-derived names of inhabited and uninhabited buildings as well as oronyms and hydronyms. The term colour appearing in the title is broadly understood as every element naming a colour, deriving from a colour term or evoking associations with a colour term. The analytical part contains a description of particular colour terms constituting the basis for proper names, with their meanings, connotations and prototypes. It is followed by a presentation of geographical names in which colour terms are elements of juxtapositions, simple compounds and closed compounds, …
