Pacienta līdzestība glaukomas terapijā

2022

A PCA Interpretation of the Glasgow Coma Scale in the Trauma Brain Injury PECARN Dataset

2018

CT scan is strongly recommended for a patient affected by head trauma, but he/she must absorb a certain amount of radiations. For this reason, the physician tries to avoid such a practice for pediatric patients. The symptoms analysis, visual/tactile inspection, and reactions to appropriate stimuli from the physician could induce him/her to put the patient in a period of observation instead of performing an immediate CT scan. As a consequence, the correct evaluation of those symptoms is a crucial task. For this reason, the Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale (PGCS) plays a fundamental role, because it is a numeric scale regarding the patient’s mental status. It is computed as the sum of the score f…

The Prevalence of Glaucoma in Young People.

2017

BACKGROUND Earlier information on the prevalence of glaucoma among children in Germany was based solely on estimates. Reported values for congenital glaucoma range from 1 in 10 000 to 1 in 68 000 depending on ethnic origin. The estimate for juvenile glaucoma is 1 in 44 000. METHODS The Gutenberg Health Study is a populationbased, prospective, monocentric cohort study with 15 010 participants aged 35 to 74. To determine the history-based prevalence of childhood glaucoma, participants were asked about the diagnosis of glaucoma, any operations for glaucoma that were performed, regular use of drugs for glaucoma, and the age of onset of glaucoma. The affected individuals were classified in four …

Synthesis and biological evaluation of lipid-like 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-1,3-thiazole derivatives as potential anticancer and antimicrobial agen…

2015

A series of new lipid-like thiazole derivatives have been synthesized in good yields by O-alkylation of 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-1,3-thiazole, a thiamine metabolite, under phase transfer catalysis conditions followed by N-alkylation with the aim to obtain potential anticancer and antimicrobial agents. The synthesized cationic amphiphiles and their ether precursors were subjected to in vitro cytotoxic evaluation against monolayer human fibrosarcoma HT-1080 and mouse hepatoma MG-22A tumour cell lines and normal mouse NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and were screened for antimicrobial activity concerning gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial and fungal strains. The synthesized compounds possessed s…

Autoimmune biomarkers in glaucoma patients.

2013

There is growing evidence showing an autoimmune involvement in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, and that alterations in natural occurring autoantibody levels play a key role. The upregulation of autoantibodies can be associated with fatal conditions, but several studies demonstrate that natural autoantibodies entail also protective characteristics and influence the protein expression of neuroretinal cells. A disbalance of natural occurring autoantibodies may shift the physiological equilibrium of protective immunity leading to a predisposition for developing glaucoma. This article highlights recent advances in understanding of autoimmune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of glaucoma.

HST observation of the inner coma of 2060 chiron

1995

Abstract The analysis of persistent comae of very large and distant comets allows us to infer the poorly known physical properties of dust and icy grains produced beyond Jupiter. Chiron is particularly interesting because Fulle ( Astron. Astrophys. 282 , 980–988; 1994) has shown that the strong asymmetricity of its coma (West, Astron. Astrophys. 241 , 635–645 1991) allows us to infer rotational properties of Chiron's nucleus. In this paper we report the observation of the asymmetric inner coma of Chiron from the analysis of 44 images of Chiron and eight images of a standard star available from the HST archive. The images were taken during February/March 1993, when Ch iron was 9.3 AU from th…

Growth-related changes of oxygen consumption rates of tumor cells grown in vitro and in vivo

1989

Growth-related changes of oxygen consumption rates of tumor cells, grown in vitro or in vivo, were investigated. For in vitro investigations, L929 and DS-carcinosarcoma cells were cultured in artificial media. For in vivo studies, DS-carcinosarcoma cells were implanted into the abdominal cavity of Sprague-Dawley rats (ascites tumor, containing malignant cells, leukocytes, lymphocytes, and macrophages). Oxygen uptake was measured photometrically. Parameters of the extracellular medium judged to possibly influence the respiratory activity of tumor cells were monitored at different growth stages (glucose, lactate, and amino acid levels, oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressures, and pH value…

Proliferation-associated oxygen consumption and morphology of tumor cells in monolayer and spheroid culture.

1992

The oxygen consumption rate, proliferative activity, and morphology of EMT6/Ro mouse mammary sarcoma cells in monolayer and multicellular spheroid culture have been investigated in a comparative study. During the transition of monolayer cells from the exponential into the plateau growth phase, there is a distinct decrease in the cellular volume that is associated with a corresponding decrease in the proliferative and respiratory activity of the cells. The decline in cell volume is mainly due to a decrease in the content of cytoplasm, whereas the size of the nucleus is only slightly reduced. A concomitant decrease in the number of mitochondria per cell obviously accounts for the reduction in…
