Simulation analysis of cold chain performance based on time–temperature data

2011

Perishable goods are a fundamental source of revenue for the retail sector; their management, however, constitutes a severe challenge for retailers and supply chain partners. A significant cost in particular is the fraction of products perished through the supply chain, which also constitutes an ethical and environmental concern. Supply chain organisation and operative characteristics have a significant influence on this matter, as in fact ensuring suitable temperature conditions for the stock-keeping units throughout the supply chain is mandatory for perishable products. Recent developments in sensing and communication technologies allow detailed monitoring and control of cold chain; howev…

Market efficiency and the long-memory of supply and demand: is price impact variable and permanent or fixed and temporary?

2016

In this comment we discuss the problem of reconciling the linear efficiency of price returns with the long-memory of supply and demand. We present new evidence that shows that efficiency is maintained by a liquidity imbalance that co-moves with the imbalance of buyer vs. seller initiated transactions. For example, during a period where there is an excess of buyer initiated transactions, there is also more liquidity for buy orders than sell orders, so that buy orders generate smaller and less frequent price responses than sell orders. At the moment a buy order is placed the transaction sign imbalance tends to dominate, generating a price impact. However, the liquidity imbalance rapidly incre…

Implication of Human Capital in the Development of SMEs through the ICT Adoption

2013

Abstract ICT adoption in SMEs and the attraction of benefits from use of these technologies remains a key point in their development. For an enterprise to take part in the digital economy must have a defined basis for innovative adopting, meaning a premise for the development of ICT infrastructure. Given that firms are not a self-driven machinery, human capital is a major factor of influence in enterprise digitization. Considering this, in this paper will analyze the effects generated by human capital on the level of ICT adoption in SMEs in Romania.

Not so different altogether: Putting Lean and sociotechnical design into practice in a process industry

2021

Purpose: The shop-floor organization under lean production (LP) has been hotly debated for about three decades. As this organization concept leaves considerable room for interpretation, the content of lean-inspired changes can vary widely. This paper pleads for a contingency view of how LP is implemented and how the outcomes of lean-inspired changes rely on users’ interpretations of the concept in particular production contexts.Design/methodology/approach: A case study was conducted in two large Norwegian chemical plants. Data from the observations and interviews were supplemented by interviews with top managers in 2017 and 2018. The first author also followed a management audit in one plan…

Sustainable Manufacturing as Mutual Competence Building

2015

In this chapter, Sustainable Manufacturing as MCB, Halvor Holtskog, Richard Ennals, and Hans Chr Garmann Johnsen argue how sustainable manufacturing can be seen as combining the traditional manufacturing management perspective with organisational development and participatory perspectives. The definition of Sustainable Business Systems is different from other uses of sustainability. The chapter tries to link arguments for business and for education. Arguably Working Life Research has an integrative role. One might ask: how can universities be seen as sustainable work systems, and how can they develop an account of empowerment?

Electronic commerce and governance forms: a transaction cost approach

2010

A large amount of the electronic commerce (EC) literature is focused on the benefits of digitalising transactions, as well as technological and organisational issues related to implementing inter-firm information systems. Even though firms choose different electronic solutions for different purposes, there are still modest research contributions focusing on what kind of governance structures that emerge from business to business (B2B) electronic commerce and why these different governance forms emerge. This paper develops a framework for analysing how certain transaction characteristics such as order frequency, relation specific assets and uncertainty affect the alignment of electronic gove…
