Kininogen binding protein p33/gC1qR is localized in the vesicular fraction of endothelial cells
1996
AbstractThe endothelial protein p33/gC1qR is thought to mediate the assembly of components of the kinin-forming and complement-activating pathways on the surface of cardiovascular cells. FACS analysis of intact human umbilical vein endothelial cells using specific antibodies to p33 revealed a minor fluorescence on the cell surface whereas permeabilized cells showed a bright fluorescence indicative of an intracellular localization of p33. Immunostaining of fixed cells confirmed the predominant intracellular localization of p33. Fractionation studies demonstrated that the vesicular but not the membrane fraction of EA.hy926 cells is rich in p33. We conclude that externalization of p33 must pre…
INVOLUTIONS ON KNOT GROUPS AND VARIETIES OF REPRESENTATIONS IN A LIE GROUP
2002
We prove the existence of a rationalisation [Formula: see text] of a classical or high-dimensional knot group Π which admits an involution if the Alexander polynomials of the knot are reciprocal. Using the group [Formula: see text] and its involution, we study the local structure, in the neighbourhood of an abelian representation, of the space of representation of the knot group Π in a a Lie group. We apply these results to the groups of classical prime knots up to 10 crossings.
Kronecker modules and reductions of a pair of bilinear forms
2004
We give a short overview on the subject of canonical reduction of a pair of bilinear forms, each being symmetric or alternating, making use of the classification of pairs of linear mappings between vector spaces given by J. Dieudonné.
The Correspondences of Luigi Cremona and Placido Tardy in the Libraries of Genoa
2018
We describe the historical framework and the main issues (biographical, scientific, political, etc.) of the correspondences of Placido Tardy and Luigi Cremona in the libraries of Genoa, which constitute an important contribution to the reconstruction of the History of Mathematics in the Italian “Risorgimento”. In particular, we mainly deal with the Cremona-Tardy, Betti-Tardy and Cremona-Guccia correspondences. Tardy’s letters are preserved at the Genoa University Library and Cremona’s letters at the Mazzini Institute of Genoa.

Maturation of epidermal Langerhans cells: increased expression of beta- and gamma-actin isoforms as a basis of specialized cell functions.
1999
Epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) represent immature dendritic cells. During in vitro culture in the presence of keratinocytes they mature into potent immunostimulatory cells for naive T cells. This process is thought to simulate in vivo maturation of LC following activation by antigen contact. Maturation of LC is accompanied by morphological alterations. Applying a differential screening procedure we isolated differentially expressed cDNAs involved in the maturation events including cDNAs of the cytoskeletal actin isoforms beta- and gamma-actin. Stronger signals with hybridization probes derived from cultured LC compared with probes derived from freshly isolated LC indicate upregulation of a…
Breakdown in Multilateral Negotiations
2015
Abstract We analyze a complete information multilateral bargaining model in which a buyer is to purchase two complementary goods from two sellers. Binding cash-offer contracts are used to govern transactions. In contrast to preexisting literature, we do not normalize the parties' reservation utilities to zero. We show that this assumption holds critical importance by demonstrating that a complete breakdown of negotiations may occur as the unique equilibrium outcome, even if only two sellers are present.
Clinical studies of sudden upper airway obstruction in patients with hereditary angioedema due to C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency.
2003
Background Hereditary angioedema due to C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency is clinically characterized by recurrent and self-limiting skin, intestinal, and laryngeal edema. Asphyxiation by laryngeal edema is the main cause of death among patients who die of hereditary angioedema. This study describes the age at which laryngeal edema first occurs, the time between onset and full development, and the effectiveness of therapy and prophylaxis. Methods Information on 123 patients with hereditary angioedema was obtained from medical histories and reports by the general practitioners, emergency physicians, and hospitals involved. Results Sixty-one patients (49.6%) experienced a total of 596 laryngea…
Risk of laryngeal edema and facial swellings after tooth extraction in patients with hereditary angioedema with and without prophylaxis with C1 inhib…
2010
Objective Tooth extractions may trigger clinical symptoms of hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency (HAE-C1-INH). The aim of this study was to determine how many tooth extractions were followed by symptoms of HAE-C1-INH in patients with and without preoperative short-term prophylaxis with C1 inhibitor concentrate. Study design Tooth extractions and clinical symptoms of HAE-C1-INH were determined from clinical record files of 171 patients with HAE-C1-INH. Results Facial swelling or potentially life-threatening laryngeal edema, or both, occurred in 124/577 tooth extractions (21.5%) without prophylaxis. Similar symptoms occurred in a fewer proportion of patients undergoing extrac…
Recurrent angioedema and the threat of asphyxiation.
2009
Angioedema (also known as Quincke disease) is the name given to edema lasting 1–7 days that recurs at irregular intervals. Target organs are the skin, tongue, glottis and larynx, gastrointestinal tract, and sometimes other soft organs. The clinical symptom referred to as angioedema forms part of a variety of disease entities (Box 1, Figure 1). In Germany, according to the present author’s estimate, several thousand patients suffer from one of the forms of recurrent angioedema. Cases of sudden asphyxiation are rare, but do occur every now and again (1). This review aims to draw attention to the various clinical features of recurrent angioedema and the practical steps for dealing with it, and…
