Anti-inflammatory compounds from Sideritis javalambrensis n-hexane extract.

The anti-inflammatory activities of the n-hexane extract of Sideritis javalambrensis and several purified fractions were investigated using the carrageenan mouse paw edema test. Progressive fractionation led to the isolation of the active principles ent-16-hydroxy-13-epimanoyl oxide [1] and esters of tyrosol with palmitic, stearic, behenic, and lignoceric acids.

In the present study the cardioprotective effects of a novel highly selective small molecule C1s inhibitor (C1s-INH-248, Knoll) were examined in a rabbit model of myocardial ischemia (I) and reperfusion (R; i.e., 60 min I + 180 min R). A V79 Chinese hamster cell line stably expressing human cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) was obtained by chromosomal integration of the human CYP1A1 cDNA under the control of the SV40 early promoter. Chromosomal integration was verified by Southern analysis, and effective transcription of the human CYP1A1 cDNA was demonstrated by Northern analysis. The CYP1A1 cDNA-encoded protein was characterized by Western analysis using anti-rat CYP1A1. Intracellular association of CYP1A1 with the endoplasmic reticulum could be visualized by in situ immunofluorescence. In a previous study we found in 50% of patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (NP-SLE) organ specific antibodies to 45-56 kD proteins in a 100,000 g supernatant (SN) from bovine brain mitochondria. Aim of the present study was to identify the corresponding target antigen. A 100,000 g SN from bovine brain mitochondria was applied to SDS-gel electrophoresis. A 50 kD band recognized by sera from patients with NP-SLE in the Western blot (WB) was excised from the gels and applied to mass spectrometry. For this reason we convened a group of specialists that focus upon HAE from around the world to develop not only a consensus on diagnosis and management of HAE, but to also provide evidence based grades, strength of evidence and classification for the consensus. Complement component deficiencies and infection: C5, C8 and C3 deficiencies in three families.

Three families are described with complement component deficiencies. In one family, five children had C5 deficiency; in a second family, two children had C8 deficiency and one child in a third family had C3 deficiency. The index cases were identified during screening of patients with recurrent pyogenic infections, recurrent meningitis and meningococcaemia. Two of the five C5 deficient patients had recurrent meningitis and meningococcaemia, two had recurrent respiratory tract infections and otitis and one was healthy. The aim of this study was to answer the question "What do nursing home residents do themselves in order to maintain their dignity?" Twenty-eight residents, 8 men and 20 women, aged 62 to 103 years, from 6 different nursing homes in Scandinavia were interviewed. The results showed that the residents tried to expand their life space, both physical and ontological, in order to experience health and dignity.
