Combined homozygous factor H and heterozygous C2 deficiency in an Italian family

Three of four children in a family have homozygous (less than 1% of normal) deficiency of factor H of the complement system and both parents, who are first cousins, are heterozygous for the same defect. The father and two of the H-deficient siblings also have a partial C2 deficiency. One of the children with combined deficiencies is affected by systemic lupus erythematosus with nephritis. No increased susceptibility to infections has been observed in the family. H deficiency is inherited in an autosomal codominant manner and is independently transmitted from C2 deficiency and HLA haplotypes. Black Hole Entropy Quantization

Ever since the pioneer works of Bekenstein and Hawking, black hole entropy has been known to have a quantum origin. Furthermore, it has long been argued by Bekenstein that entropy should be quantized in discrete (equidistant) steps given its identification with horizon area in (semi-)classical general relativity and the properties of area as an adiabatic invariant. This lead to the suggestion that black hole area should also be quantized in equidistant steps to account for the discrete black hole entropy. Quantum gravity effects near the null black hole singularity

The structure of the Cauchy Horizon singularity of a black hole formed in a generic collapse is studied by means of a renormalization group equation for quantum gravity. It is shown that during the early evolution of the Cauchy Horizon the increase of the mass function is damped when quantum fluctuations of the metric are taken into account.

Evolution of tissue-specific keratins as deduced from novel cDNA sequences of the lungfish Protopterus aethiopicus.

Lungfishes are possibly the closest extant relatives of the land vertebrates (tetrapods). We report here the cDNA and predicted amino acid sequences of 13 different keratins (ten type I and three type II) of the lungfish Protopterus aethiopicus. These keratins include the orthologs of human K8 and K18. The lungfish keratins were also identified in tissue extracts using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, keratin blot binding assays and immunoblotting. Tracing keratin evolution: catalog, expression patterns and primary structure of shark (Scyliorhinus stellaris) keratins.

We have studied individual keratins of an elasmobranch, the shark Scyliorhinus stellaris (the lesser-spotted dogfish). From various shark tissues, notably skin and stomach, cytoskeletal proteins were isolated and then separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Using complementary keratin blot-binding assays and immunoblotting, among these proteins we identified a variety of type I and type II keratins. According to their tissue-specific expression, we distinguished Is and IIs keratins from IE and IIE keratins ("S" and "E" from "simple epithelial" and "epidermal", respectively). Sequence, evolution and tissue expression patterns of an epidermal type I keratin from the shark Scyliorhinus stellaris.

From the shark Scyliorhinus stellaris we cloned and sequenced a cDNA encoding a novel type I keratin, termed SstK10. By MALDI-MS peptide mass fingerprinting of cytoskeletal proteins separated on polyacrylamide gels, we assigned SstK10 to a 46-kDa protein which is the major epidermal type I (“IE”) keratin in this fish and is specifically expressed in stratified epithelia. In a phylogenetic tree based on type I keratin sequences and with lamprey keratins applied as outgroup, SstK10 branches off in a rather basal position. The geography of the Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo: local and international aspect

The Mathematical Circle of Palermo, founded in 1884 by 27 mathematicians all living in Palermo, became the publisher of the prestigious magazine "Rendiconti", which in thirty years became one of the leading international mathematical journals. In this talk, we will analyze the evolution of the components of the Societies and of Rendiconti towards internationalization from 1884 to 1914. Moreover, we will try to extract from the statistical data some considerations about the possible causes of the identified internationalization process

Il ruolo di Luigi Cremona nella prima formazione scientifica di Eugenio Beltrami attraverso la loro corrispondenza

In October 1862 Beltrami was appointed, before graduating, as a professor at the University of Bologna, and here he met again his friend and colleague Cremona. The correspondence between the two mathematicians clearly shows not only the intimate friendship between them, but also Cremona’s role as Beltrami’s mentor in those years. The former is indeed generous with advice, encouragement and recommendations to his friend.
