Abstract Recent evidence suggests that the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative and inflammatory neurological diseases has a neuroimmunological component involving complement, an innate humoral immune defense system. The present study demonstrates the effects of experimentally induced global ischemia on the biosynthesis of C1q, the recognition subcomponent of the classical complement activation pathway, in the CNS. The anti-inflammatory activities of the n-hexane extract of Sideritis javalambrensis and several purified fractions were investigated using the carrageenan mouse paw edema test. Progressive fractionation led to the isolation of the active principles ent-16-hydroxy-13-epimanoyl oxide [1] and esters of tyrosol with palmitic, stearic, behenic, and lignoceric acids.

A V79 Chinese hamster cell line stably expressing human cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) was obtained by chromosomal integration of the human CYP1A1 cDNA under the control of the SV40 early promoter. Chromosomal integration was verified by Southern analysis, and effective transcription of the human CYP1A1 cDNA was demonstrated by Northern analysis. The CYP1A1 cDNA-encoded protein was characterized by Western analysis using anti-rat CYP1A1. Intracellular association of CYP1A1 with the endoplasmic reticulum could be visualized by in situ immunofluorescence. In a previous study we found in 50% of patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (NP-SLE) organ specific antibodies to 45-56 kD proteins in a 100,000 g supernatant (SN) from bovine brain mitochondria. Aim of the present study was to identify the corresponding target antigen. A 100,000 g SN from bovine brain mitochondria was applied to SDS-gel electrophoresis. A 50 kD band recognized by sera from patients with NP-SLE in the Western blot (WB) was excised from the gels and applied to mass spectrometry. The aim of this study was to answer the question "What do nursing home residents do themselves in order to maintain their dignity?" Twenty-eight residents, 8 men and 20 women, aged 62 to 103 years, from 6 different nursing homes in Scandinavia were interviewed. The results showed that the residents tried to expand their life space, both physical and ontological, in order to experience health and dignity.

The phytochemical investigation of the acetone and methanol extracts of the flowers of Magydaris tomentosa (Desf.) DC afforded six known coumarins as well as (+)-meranzin hydrate (7), not previously reported as a natural product. The antibacterial activity of umbelliprenin (1), osthol (2), imperatorin (3), citropten (4) and (+)-meranzin hydrate (7) was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. All coumarins (1-7) isolated in this study inhibited growth of all bacterial strains tested (MIC between 16 and 256 microg/mL), the most active being imperatorin (3) (MICs between 32 and 128 microg/mL) and citropten (4) (MICs between 16 and 256 microg/mL). Based on a dataset comprising coding DNA sequences of 23 anthropoid primates, we herein investigate if rates of sequence evolution of SPerm Adhesion Molecule 1 (SPAM1, also PH-20), which participates in sperm–egg interaction, is lower in more sexually dimorphic species. For comparison, we analyze sequence evolution of apolipoprotein A-IV (APOA4) and apolipoprotein A-V (APOA5), which should evolve under less or even no sexual selection given their expression in blood, digestive tract, liver, and lungs. Abstract The identification of P450 mRNAs in a tissue poses the problem that members of the same P450 gene family share a high sequence homology. Studies based on oligomer probes rely on a probe covering only a few base pairs.
