Electroorganic synthesis of nitriles via a halogen-free domino oxidation–reduction sequence

2015

A direct electroorganic sequence yielding nitriles from oximes in undivided cells is reported. Despite the fact that intermediate nitrile oxides might be formed, the method is viable to prepare benzonitriles without substituents ortho to the aldoxime moiety. This constant current method is easy to perform for a broad scope of substrates and employs common electrodes, such as graphite and lead.

Silicatein conjugation inside nanoconfined geometries through immobilized NTA–Ni(ii) chelates

2013

The chemical modification and bioconjugation processes inside confined geometries by His-tagged silicatein promote sensitive changes in the polarity and surface charge density that mainly contribute to the ionic current rectification properties of the single conical nanopores.

Formation of layered titania and zirconia catalysed by surface-bound silicatein

2005

Silicatein immobilised on self-assembled polymer layers using a histidine-tag chelating anchor group retains its hydrolytical activity for the formation of biosilica, and catalyses the formation of layered arrangements of biotitania and biozirconia.

Highly enantioselective aza-Henry reaction with isatin N-Boc ketimines.

2014

A highly enantioselective aza-Henry reaction with isatin N-Boc ketimines using a Cu(II)–BOX complex as a catalyst is described. The reaction, which does not require protection of the N1 atom, provides the corresponding nitroamines bearing a quaternary stereocentre with high yields and enantiomeric excesses (up to 99.9%).

A catalytic highly enantioselective direct synthesis of 2-bromo-2-nitroalkan-1-ols through a Henry reaction.

2008

Highly enantiomerically enriched 2-bromo-2-nitroalkan-1-ols are prepared by direct condensation of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes with bromonitromethane in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(II) acetate and a C1-symmetric camphorderived amino pyridine ligand. Development of a polydimethylsiloxane–thymol/nitroprusside composite based sensor involving thymol derivatization for ammonium monitoring in water sa…

2014

This report describes a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-thymol/nitroprusside delivery composite sensor for direct monitoring of ammonium in environmental water samples. The sensor is based on a PDMS support that contains the Berthelot's reaction reagents. To prepare the PDMS-thymol/nitroprusside composite discs, thymol and nitroprusside have been encapsulated in the PDMS matrix, forming a reagent release support which significantly simplifies the analytical measurements, since it avoids the need to prepare derivatizing reagents and sample handling is reduced to the sampling step. When, the PDMS-thymol/nitroprusside composite was introduced in water samples spontaneous release of the chromophore…

Indentation of rigidly supported sandwich beams with foam cores exhibiting non-linear compressive behaviour.

2011

A generalized analytical approach to investigate the indentation of sandwich beams under concentrated loads is presented, based on the Winkler foundation theory. A segment-wise model is implemented to the case of fully backed sandwich beams with polymeric foam cores exhibiting generic non-linear compressive behaviours. Closed-form analytical solutions of the indentation curve are obtained for simplified foam compression behaviours: elastic-perfectly-plastic, bilinear and bilinear-perfectly-plastic. Analytical predictions are compared with experimental data from sandwiches employing foam cores with peculiar non-linear behaviours. The proposed models are found to give a better match of the e…

Wormlike Polystyrene Brushes in Thin Films

1997

Mono- and multilayer films were prepared on mica by solution casting of a high molecular weight polymacromonomer, i.e., a polymethacrylate of about 1000 repeating units each of which was substituted by a polystyrene chain with a molecular weight of about 5000 Da. The films were studied by tapping scanning force microscopy. The material showed a remarkable preference for forming well-defined monolayers of a thickness of 6.5 ± 0.2 nm consistent with the hard core diameter of the collapsed cylindrical brush molecules. When the films were probed with high normal force, the single molecules were observed to organize in a dense nematic-like packing as expected for inherently stiff molecules. In o…

High magnification SEM observations for two types of granularity in a high burnup PWR fuel rim

1998

Abstract Rim microstructure of an UO2 pellet irradiated up to 61 GWd/tU, observed with high magnification scanning electron microscopy, presented two types of subgrains: polyhedral and round subgrains. Round subgrains were also observed on the surface of fabrication pores along the pellet radius. These round-shaped subgrains seem to be associated to free surface rearrangement. This new type of round subgrains was proved to be independent of the rim effect. Observations of the fuel structure in the vicinity of rim area evidenced two types of defects specific to rim effect: planar defects and small intergranular pores. Hypothesis is made that the accumulation of planar defects could generate …

Thin film growth into the ion track structures in polyimide by atomic layer deposition

2017

Abstract High-aspect ratio porous structures with controllable pore diameters and without a stiff substrate can be fabricated using the ion track technique. Atomic layer deposition is an ideal technique for depositing thin films and functional surfaces on complicated 3D structures due to the high conformality of the films. In this work, we studied Al2O3 and TiO2 films grown by ALD on pristine polyimide (Kapton HN) membranes as well as polyimide membranes etched in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and boric acid (BO3) solution by means of RBS, PIXE, SEM-EDX and helium ion microcopy (HIM). The focus was on the first ALD growth cycles. The areal density of Al2O3 film in the 400 cycle sample was det…
