Effect of plasma treatment on the properties of Arundo Donax L. leaf fibres and its bio-based epoxy composites: A preliminary study

2016

Abstract A preliminary investigation about the effect of plasma treatment on the properties of natural fibres extracted from the leaf of the giant reed Arundo Donax L. and their compatibility with a bio-based epoxy resin is performed. To this aim, the influence of plasma treatment on the functional groups and on the thermal behaviour of fibre were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Moreover, the mechanical characterization of fibres was performed through fibre tensile tests. Short randomly oriented fibres/bio-based epoxy composites were manufactured by hand lay-up method followed by compression moulding, varying both fibres weight cont…

Nanocomposites of bacterial cellulose/hydroxyapatite for biomedical applications.

2008

In the present work, a nanocomposite material formed by bacterial cellulose (BC) networks and calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders was synthesized and characterized. The HAp nanoparticles were previously prepared by a wet chemical precipitation method, starting from aqueous solutions of calcium nitrate and di-ammonium phosphate salts. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy reveals that the prepared HAp corresponds to calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite. BC-HAp nanocomposites were prepared by introducing carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) into the bacteria culture media. HAp nanoparticles were then introduced and remained suspended in the culture medium during the formation of cellulose nanofibrils…

Synthesis and Characterization of Palladium Nanoparticle/Polypyrrole Composites

2008

In this work, a simple non-template one-step method for the synthesis of 2.0−2.5 nm palladium nanoparticles encapsulated into a polypyrrole shell via direct redox reaction between palladium(II) acetate and pyrrole in acetonitrile medium is described. Palladium nanoparticles are found to be able to self-organize into spherical Pd/PPy composites. The size of the Pd/PPy composite particles and Pd content in the composite depend strongly on the concentration of the palladium salt component. The combination of elemental CHNS and thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis was used to determine a high (∼40 wt %) content of palladium, which is in a good agreement with EDX data. The process of Pd/PPy composit…

Recycling ground tire rubber (GTR) scraps as high-impact filler of in situ produced polyketone matrix

2014

A sustainable procedure for recycling powdered rubber coming from scrap tires (ground tire rubber [GTR]) is proposed as based on the dispersion in polyketone (PK) matrix, obtained in situ by CO/ethylene copolymerization. Three types of catalysts are used operative in solvents of different polarities. The catalyst productivity and the hybrids morphology are evaluated and optimized to final composites features. The obtained products are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and solvent extractions in order to investigate the occurrence and the extent of interactions between PK macromolecular chains and the GTR components; and their effects on the final proper…

Lifetime predictions of non-ionic and ionic biopolymers: kinetic studies by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis

2021

AbstractIn this paper, films based on sustainable polymers with variable charge have been investigated by non-isothermal thermogravimetry in order to predict their lifetime, which is a key parameter for their potential use in numerous technological and biomedical applications. Specifically, chitosan has been selected as positively charged biopolymer, while alginate has been chosen as negatively charged biopolymer. Among non-ionic polymers, methylcellulose has been investigated. Thermogravimetric measurements at variable heating rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C min−1) have been performed for all the polymers to study their degradation kinetics by using isoconversional procedures combined with ‘Mas…

On the trade-off between processability and opto-electronic properties of single wall carbon nanotube derivatives in thin film heterojunctions

2015

A flow functionalization route has been employed to derivatize single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by thienylphenyl groups. The SWCNT derivatives in the most soluble fraction have been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, DLS analysis, DFT calculations, and UV-vis-NIR, microRaman and IR spectroscopies to study the degree of functionalization, the concentration of SWCNTs in solution, the dimension of the aggregates in solutions, the density of defects, and the presence of the thienylphenyl groups. Thin-film heterojunctions made of SWCNT derivatives and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) have been prepared by various methods employing the Langmuir–Schaefer technique, spin-coating and the…

Estimation of hydrogen transfer mechanisms in composite materials

2008

Abstract Spill-over effect as a hydrogen transfer mechanism is proposed to explain an increased capacity of hydrogen absorption and improvement of hydrogen activation kinetics in composite material based on the AB5 type metal hydride and powdered glass. A raw lanthanum nickel alloy AB5 with small amount of additives was used as catalyst and bulk material for hydrogen storage, and a borosilicate glass powder with developed surface was applied as a support material. Thermogravimetric technique to determine an absorbed amount of the hydrogen in materials and X-ray powder diffraction analysis for structural investigations was used.

Thermo-oxidative ageing of an organo-modified clay and effects on the properties of PA6 based nanocomposites

2013

a b s t r a c t In this work a careful investigation on the degradation of an organically modified montmorillonite sample (Cloisite 15A) thermal treated under different atmospheres, namely nitrogen, air and oxygen enriched atmosphere was performed. The exposure time of the thermal treatment ranged between 5 and 300 min. The chemical composition evolution as function of the thermal treatment conditions of the clay organic modifier was monitored by means of combined thermogravimetry/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR). Moreover, the morphological behaviour of treated Cloisite 15A sam- ples as function of the time and of the decomposition atmosphere was investigated by X-ray dif…

Properties and structure of cyanate ester/polysulfone/organoclay nanocomposites

2006

In this paper, a cyanate ester (CE) matrix has been modified with polysulfone and an organic montmorillonite (Nanofil 919). The blend was thermally cured in presence of copper acetylcetonate and nonylphenol. The morphology of the cured materials was investigated by wide angle X-ray, scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. An intercalate structure of silicate platelets in the cyanate matrix has been obtained. Furthermore, results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) suggest that CE/PSF/Nanofil 919 nanocomposites have higher thermal stability than the neat resin, increasing the onset decomposition temperature. Flexural strength distributions of modified and neat cyanate matri…

Effect of Plasma Treatment on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Marble Powder/Epoxy Composites

2016

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the plasma treatment on the behavior of composite structures reinforced with marble powder, obtained as processing waste in the “Custonaci” basin. Moreover, different filler amounts (i.e. 10%wt, 20%, 30% in weight) were investigated. For the mechanical characterization, tensile and flexural quasi-static tests, Charpy impact test, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were performed. For the thermal stability, thermogravimetric analysis was carried out. Finally, real density and fraction of voids were measured. It was observed that untreated marble powder, on one hand, increases tensile and flexural stiffness and improves thermal stabi…
