Present and Perspectives of Photoactive Porous Composites Based on Semiconductor Nanocrystals and Metal-Organic Frameworks

2021

This review focuses on the recent developments in synthesis, properties, and applications of a relatively new family of photoactive porous composites, integrated by metal halide perovskite (MHP) nanocrystals and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The synergy between the two systems has led to materials (MHP@MOF composites) with new functionalities along with improved properties and phase stability, thus broadening their applications in multiple areas of research such as sensing, light-harvesting solar cells, light-emitting device technology, encryption, and photocatalysis. The state of the art, recent progress, and most promising routes for future research on these photoactive porous composit…

Synergistic assembly of hyperbranched polyethylenimine and fatty acids leading to unusual supramolecular nanocapsules

2005

Self-assembly of hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PEI) and fatty acids leads to supramolecular inverted micellar structures that are able to irreversibly transfer water-soluble guest molecules into organic solvents. Perez Prieto, Julia, Julia.Perez@uv.es ; Stiriba, Salah Eddine, Salah.Stiriba@uv.es

Open-shell doublet character in a hexaazatrinaphthylene trianion complex

2015

Three-electron reduction of hexaazatrinaphthylene (HAN) with a magnesium(I) reagent leads to [(HAN){Mg(nacnac)}3] (1), containing a [HAN]3– ligand with a spin of S = ½. Ab initio calculations reveal that the [HAN]3– ligand in 1 has a groundstate wave function with multiconfigurational properties, and can be described as a triradicaloid species with a small amount of open-shell doublet character. peerReviewed

Guest exchange in dimeric capsules of a tetraurea calix[4]arene in the solid state

2007

A solid powder of hydrogen bonded dimers of a tetraurea calix[4]arene is able to exchange the encapsulated guest in contact with the vapor of a second guest. The molecules of a guest-free powder obtained from a polar solvent cannot rearrange in the solid phase to form new guest-filled capsules under these conditions.

Disulfide-crosslinked hyaluronan-gelatin hydrogel films: a covalent mimic of the extracellular matrix for in vitro cell growth

2003

A new disulfide crosslinking method was developed for the preparation of blended hyaluronan (HA)-gelatin hydrogels to form a synthetic, covalently linked mimic of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The HA and gelatin were chemically modified using 3,3′-dithiobis(propionic hydrazide) (DTP). After reduction with dithiothreitol (DTT), the thiol derivatives of HA (HA-DTPH) and gelatin (gelatin-DTPH) were obtained and characterized. To minimize interference with biological function, the degree of substitution of HA-DTPH and gelatin-DTPH was kept below 50%. Solutions of HA-DTPH and gelatin-DTPH in varying blends (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% gelatin) were prepared in 1% w/v NaCl and crosslinked by disulfide b…

Large negative magnetoresistance effects in Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al

2003

Abstract Materials, which display large changes in resistivity in response to an applied magnetic field (magnetoresistance) are currently of great interest due to their potential for applications in magnetic sensors, magnetic random access memories, and spintronics. Guided by striking features in the electronic structure of several magnetic compounds, we prepared the Heusler compound Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al. Based on our band structure calculations, we have chosen this composition in order to obtain a half-metallic ferromagnet with a van Hove singularity in the vicinity of the Fermi energy in the majority spin channel and a gap in the minority spin channel. We find a magnetoresistive effect of 30% …

Tissue engineered pre-vascularized buccal mucosa equivalents utilizing a primary triculture of epithelial cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts

2015

Artificial generated buccal mucosa equivalents are a promising approach for the reconstruction of urethral defects. Limiting in this approach is a poor blood vessel supply after transplantation, resulting in increased morbidity and necrosis. We generated a pre-vascularized buccal mucosa equivalent in a tri-culture of primary buccal epithelial cells, fibroblasts and microvascular endothelial cells, using a native collagen membrane as a scaffold. A successful pre-vascularization and dense formation of capillary-like structures at superficial areas was demonstrated. The lumen size of pre-formed blood vessels corresponded to the capillary size in vivo (10-30 μm). Comparing native with a highly …

Fine-tuning DNA/albumin polyelectrolyte interactions to produce the efficient transfection agent cBSA-147.

2010

We present the preparation and isolation of different chemically modified BSA species with varying numbers of primary amino groups at the surface. Highly cationic albumin proteins with increased numbers of amino groups were achieved and complex formation with plasmid DNA was carefully investigated. We compare the transfection results, polyelectrolyte complexes morphologies with their impact on complex stabilities, cytotoxicities and DNA accessibility. This knowledge-driven approach led to the identification of the efficient non-viral DNA delivery agent cBSA-147, which showed high transfection efficacies and stability.

In situ crosslinkable hyaluronan hydrogels for tissue engineering

2003

We describe the development of an injectable, cell-containing hydrogel that supports cell proliferation and growth to permit in vivo engineering of new tissues. Two thiolated hyaluronan (HA) derivatives were coupled to four alpha,beta-unsaturated ester and amide derivatives of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) 3400. The relative chemical reactivity with cysteine decreased in the order PEG-diacrylate (PEGDA)>>PEG-dimethacrylate>PEG-diacrylamide>PEG-dimethacrylamide. The 3-thiopropanoyl hydrazide derivative (HA-DTPH) was more reactive than the 4-thiobutanoyl hydrazide, HA-DTBH. The crosslinking of HA-DTPH with PEGDA in a molar ratio of 2:1 occurred in approximately 9 min, suitable for an in situ cr…

Collagen membranes of dermal and pericardial origin-In vivo evolvement of vascularization over time.

2020

Aim of the study was to compare the evolvement of vascularization over time of collagen membranes (CMs) of dermal and pericardial origin in an in vivo animal study. Twenty-eight mice underwent implantation of three commercially available CM derived from porcine dermis (homogenous structure: CM1 (Control 1) and bilayer structure: CM2 [Control 2]), from porcine pericardium (CM3; Test 1) as well as CM3 sprayed with silica-enhanced nanostructured hydroxyapatite (CM4, Test 2). After 3, 6, 9, and 12 days, intravital fluorescence microscopy was conducted for determination of capillary diameter, density, flow, and length. At Day 12, samples were examined immunohistologically for expression of fibro…
