Thermal kinetics for the energy valorisation of polylactide/sisal biocomposites

2018

[EN] The thermal stability and decomposition kinetics of PLA/sisal biocomposites was discussed to evaluate the suitability of their use in energy recovery processes such as pyrolysis and combustion. The influence of the addition of sisal up to 30%wt, the presence of coupling agent, and the atmosphere of operation, i.e. inert or oxidative was discussed by means of multi-rate linear non-isothermal thermogravimetric experiments. All biocomposites showed a mean high heating value of 15 MJ/kg indicating their suitability for energy recovery processes. The thermal requirements of PLA/sisal decomposition were assessed in terms of onset decomposition temperature and apparent activation energy. A mi…

Born-Infeld gravity and its functional extensions

2014

We investigate the dynamics of a family of functional extensions of the (Eddington-inspired) Born-Infeld gravity theory, constructed with the inverse of the metric and the Ricci tensor. We provide a generic formal solution for the connection and an Einstein-like representation for the metric field equations of this family of theories. For particular cases we consider applications to the early-time cosmology and find that non-singular universes with a cosmic bounce are very generic and robust solutions.

Frailty Is Associated with Oxidative Stress in Older Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

2021

Aging has increased the prevalence of frailty, and type 2 diabetes (T2D) has also increased in prevalence. Diabetes and oxidative stress (OS) have been shown to be related to frailty. However, the exact mechanism by which it occurs is not fully known. Our aim was to analyze body composition in community-dwelling older diabetic people treated in our center and to evaluate the possible relation between OS, frailty, and body composition. We included 100 adults older than 65 years with T2D. We found that 15% were frail and 57% were prefrail. The patients included in the nonrobust group showed increased levels of OS. Our study shows that the presence of T2D in the geriatric population is associa…

Characterization of Humic Acids from Raised Bog Peat

2014

Abstract Humic substances form most of the organic component of soil, peat and natural waters, but their structure and properties are very much dependent on the source. The aim of this study was to characterize humic acids from raised bog peat to evaluate the homogeneity of humic acids isolated from the bog bodies and to study peat humification impact on the properties of humic acids. Peat humic acids (HA) have an intermediate position between the living organic matter and coal organic matter, with their structure formed in a process where the relatively labile moieties (carbohydrates, amino acids, etc.) are destroyed, and thermodynamically more stable aromatic and polycyclic structures eme…

Deriving electrophysiological brain network connectivity via tensor component analysis during freely listening to music

2020

Recent studies show that the dynamics of electrophysiological functional connectivity is attracting more and more interest since it is considered as a better representation of functional brain networks than static network analysis. It is believed that the dynamic electrophysiological brain networks with specific frequency modes, transiently form and dissolve to support ongoing cognitive function during continuous task performance. Here, we propose a novel method based on tensor component analysis (TCA), to characterize the spatial, temporal, and spectral signatures of dynamic electrophysiological brain networks in electroencephalography (EEG) data recorded during free music-listening. A thr…

On hyperbolic type involutions

2001

We give a bound on the number of hyperbolic knots which are double covered by a fixed (non hyperbolic) manifold in terms of the number of tori and of the invariants of the Seifert fibred pieces of its Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition. We also investigate the problem of finding the non hyperbolic knots with the same double cover of a hyperbolic one and give several examples to illustrate the results.

Stability of ascorbic acid in adapted milk-based infant formulae during storage

2004

A study was made of the effects of storage (for up to 17 months at 22 or 37 °C) on the ascorbic acid contents of four adapted milk-based infant formulae with the same composition except for the iron salt added (lactate or sulphate) and/or the vitamin E source involved (α-tocopherol (α-T) or α-tocopherol acetate (α-TAc)). Ascorbic acid was measured by a voltammetric method. The ascorbic acid contents of the formulae ranged from 0.77–0.84 g kg−1 immediately after manufacture to 0.41–0.48 g kg−1 after 17 months of storage. Samples stored at 22 °C had higher ascorbic acid contents than those stored at 37 °C. A multiple regression analysis performed to evaluate ascorbic acid evolution throughout…

Liquid/Gas and Liquid/Liquid Phase Behavior of n-Butane/1,4-Polybutadiene versus n-Butane/1,2-Polybutadiene

2005

Solutions of 1,4-polybutadiene (1,4-PB, 98% cis) and of 1,2-polybutadiene (1,2-PB) in n-butane (n-C 4 ) were studied with respect to their vapor pressure and to their demixing into two liquid phases under isochoric conditions within the temperature range from 25 to 75 °C. 1,2-PB mixes homogeneously with n-C 4 at any ratio, in contrast to 1,4-PB, which exhibits a miscibility gap extending from practically pure solvent to approximately 40 wt % polymer. Corresponding to these solubility differences, the vapor pressures for the system n-C 4 /1,4-PB are considerably higher than for n-C 4 /1,2-PB at the same concentration and temperature. The experimental results are modeled accurately and consis…

Fast Approximated Discriminative Common Vectors Using Rank-One SVD Updates

2013

An efficient incremental approach to the discriminative common vector (DCV) method for dimensionality reduction and classification is presented. The proposal consists of a rank-one update along with an adaptive restriction on the rank of the null space which leads to an approximate but convenient solution. The algorithm can be implemented very efficiently in terms of matrix operations and space complexity, which enables its use in large-scale dynamic application domains. Deep comparative experimentation using publicly available high dimensional image datasets has been carried out in order to properly assess the proposed algorithm against several recent incremental formulations.
