Implications of Theories of Language for Information Systems
1985
This article demonstrates how language views can be adopted into an information systems context. We distinguish here between five language views: denotational, generative, cognitive, behavioristic, and interactionist. These views differ in their assumptions about he origin of linguistic behavior, the primary functions of language, elements of language, and the nature of linguistic knowledge. Information system development approaches can be characterized by their underlying language views. This explains great differences in development methods and research. Thus, language views have implications and should be chosen continency for a given information system context.

Experimental evaluation of hypertext access structures
2002
Transient hypertextual access structures (THASs) are temporary graphs formed automatically on the basis of the situation-dependent information needs of software engineers. The approach is implemented in the HyperSoft system, which is a hypertext-based software maintenance support tool. THASs highlight the relevant parts of the program and enable nonlinear browsing between them. The system also supports various graphical views whose elements are linked to the program text. This paper describes the effects of using these hypertextual structures in two separate experiments. The subjects of both experiments were computer science students (total N = 70). In both experiments, the subjects perform…
Comprehension effects of signalling relationships between documents in search engines
2010
A key task for students learning about a complex topic from multiple documents on the web is to establish the existing rhetorical relations between the documents. Traditional search engines such as Google(R) display the search results in a listed format, without signalling any relationship between the documents retrieved. New search engines such as Kartoo(R) go a step further, displaying the results as a constellation of documents, in which the existing relations between pages are made explicit. This presentation format is based on previous studies of single-text comprehension, which demonstrate that providing a graphical overview of the text contents and their relation boosts readers' comp…
Effects of Scientific Information Format on the Comprehension Self-Monitoring Processes: Question Generation // Efectos del formato en que se present…
2013
Generating questions is a regulatory action associated with self-monitoring processes in comprehension tasks: subjects can ask information seeking questions to solve comprehension obstacles. A sequence of two related experiments were conducted to trigger, classify and analyse questions asked under different conditions: reading a text about experimental scientific devices operating, watching these devices in a DVD and manipulating them in the LAB. Students’ information seeking questions were classified using a simple taxonomy. Taking into account the multimedia learning principles, the advantages of realistic animations for understanding time-depending processes and the effect of the procedu…
Instrucción en estrategias de comprensión lectora mediante enseñanza recíproca: efectos del agrupamiento de los estudiantes
2013
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two grouping formats on the reading comprehension. Reading comprehension Instruction used reciprocal teaching (RT) that is an instructional procedure to teach students cognitive strategies that might lead to improved reading comprehension. A sample of 43 students in the fourth year of primary education was selected: 18 children were instructed in regular classroom (GG), 8 were instructed in small group (PG), while the remaining 17 made up the comparison group (GC). Two types of comprehension measures were used: tasks of specific effects (getting the main idea, comprehension-monitoring test) and transfer effect measures (standardized test, …
Mixed camera angles viewpoints improve learning medical hand procedure in nurse training
2017
Communication donnée le 31 Août 2017 lors de la session J 10 : Instructional Design, Learning and Instructional TechnologyComprehension of Text and Graphics - C; International audience; Few previous research showed that camera viewpoints differences played a role in learning hand procedures from videos. However, learning videos on hand procedures showing only single viewpoints have been investigated, for example face to face vs. over the shoulder views. Further, the effect of seeing the human model's face and the effect of showing hand actions have also been studied. The results of these research are not always consistent. The goal of the present research was to investigate the effect of mi…

LEARNING DIFFERENT READING STRATEGIES AS A BASIS FOR LEARNING SKILLS
2020
Based on the latest OECD International Studies (The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], 2019) on reading literacy of Latvian primary school pupils, the overall reading literacy has fallen. The ability to read and understand text is one of the first skills students need at school. Based on observations during practice, primary school learners are technically well literate, that is, they can clearly read what has been written, acknowledge sentence boundaries, and read with appropriate intonation. However, the task of the school is not to teach students to read technically, but to read thoughtfully, so that the information could be understood and used in further learn…
Systematic Analysis of Readability of Patient Information on Internet Pages from Departments for Trauma Surgery of German University Hospitals
2020
The need-based information transfer in education as well as for the recruitment of patients becomes more and more relevant. Here, the internet has emerged as an increasingly important factor in recent years and therefore information pages on hospital homepages can be very helpful. However, it is known that basic text comprehension skills are lacking among large populations. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the readability of the patient information available on the websites of trauma departments of German university hospitals. For this purpose, a search for information material on 10 different diagnoses was carried out. Out of 360 texts possible, 185 were found and assigned to 2 …
