Fast prototyping of a SoC-based smart-camera: a real-time fall detection case study

2014

International audience; Smart camera, i.e. cameras that are able to acquire and process images in real-time, is a typical example of the new embedded computer vision systems. A key example of application is automatic fall detection, which can be useful for helping elderly people in daily life. In this paper, we propose a methodology for development and fast-prototyping of a fall detection system based on such a smart camera, which allows to reduce the development time compared to standard approaches. Founded on a supervised classification approach, we propose a HW/SW implementation to detect falls in a home environment using a single camera and an optimized descriptor adapted to real-time t…

Real Time Robust Embedded Face Detection Using High Level Description

2011

Face detection is a fundamental prerequisite step in the process of face recognition. It consists of automatically finding all the faces in an image despite the considerable variations of lighting, background, appearance of people, position/orientation of faces, and their sizes. This type of object detection has the distinction of having a very large intra-class, making it a particularly difficult problem to solve, especially when one wishes to achieve real time processing. A human being has a great ability to analyze images. He can extract the information about it and focus only on areas of interest (the phenomenon of attention). Thereafter he can detect faces in an extremely reliable way.…

Agronomic Evaluation of Ethiopian Mustard (brassica Carinata A. Braun) Germplasm and Physical-energy Characterization of Crop Residues in a Semi-arid…

2017

Brassica carinata A. Braun is one of the most interesting oilseed crops suited to arid and semi-arid areas for energy purposes. Several studies have highlighted the possibility of introducing this species into cropping systems, typical of Mediterranean region. The aims of this study were to evaluate the agronomic performance of Brassica carinata germplasm under Mediterranean climatic conditions and to assess the physical and energy characteristics of crop residues and pellets made from the residues. A total of 20 different accessions of Brassica carinata were compared in a semi-arid area of Sicily (Italy). In the two-year test period, the main morphological and yield parameters of the acces…

Update on the TowerJazz CMOS DMAPS development for the ATLAS ITk

2019

The upgrade of the ATLAS tracking detector for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN requires the development of novel radiation hard silicon sensor technologies. For the de- velopment of depleted CMOS sensors for ATLAS we combined small electrodes with minimal capacitance and advanced processing for fully depleted active sensor volume to achieve radiation hard CMOS sensors in line with ATLAS ITk specifications. Based on initial studies on the prototype sensor “TowerJazz Investigator” we have now developed, produced and tested a first full-size depleted CMOS sensor based on the 180nm TowerJazz imag- ing process, the so-called “MALTA” sensor. The sensor combines special low-noise…

The TileCal Optical Multiplexer Board 9U

2011

Abstract TileCal is the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment at LHC/CERN. The system contains roughly 10,000 channels of read-out electronics, whose signals are gathered and digitized in the front-end electronics and then transmitted to the counting room through two redundant optical links. Then, the data is received in the back-end system by the Optical Multiplexer Board (OMB) 9U which performs a CRC check to the redundant data to avoid Single Event Upsets errors. A real-time decision is taken on the event-to-event basis to transmit single data to the Read-Out Drivers (RODs) for processing. Due to the low dose level expected during the first years of operations in ATLAS it was deci…

Parallelization of adaptive MC integrators

2019

Abstract Monte Carlo (MC) methods for numerical integration seem to be embarrassingly parallel on first sight. When adaptive schemes are applied in order to enhance convergence however, the seemingly most natural way of replicating the whole job on each processor can potentially ruin the adaptive behaviour. Using the popular VEGAS-Algorithm as an example an economic method of semi-micro parallelization with variable grain-size is presented and contrasted with another straightforward approach of macro-... FlexibleSUSY—A spectrum generator generator for supersymmetric models

2019

This program has been imported from the CPC Program Library held at Queen's University Belfast (1969-2018) Abstract We introduce FlexibleSUSY, a Mathematica and C++ package, which generates a fast, precise C++ spectrum generator for any SUSY model specified by the user. The generated code is designed with both speed and modularity in mind, making it easy to adapt and extend with new features. The model is specified by supplying the superpotential, gauge structure and particle content in a SARAH model file; specific boundary conditions e.g. at the GUT, weak or intermediate scales are defined in a separate F... Use of wavelet for image processing in smart cameras with low hardware resources

2013

International audience; Images from embedded sensors need digital processing to recover high-quality images and to extract features of a scene. Depending on the properties of the sensor and on the application, the designer fits together different algorithms to process images. In the context of embedded devices, the hardware supporting those applications is very constrained in terms of power consumption and silicon area. Thus, the algorithms have to be compliant with the embedded specifications i.e. reduced computational complexity and low memory requirements. We investigate the opportunity to use the wavelet representation to perform good quality image processing algorithms at a lower compu…

A low power and high resolution data logger for submarine seismic monitoring

2010

The design, implementation and characterization of a digital waveform recorder for ocean bottom seismic monitoring is here reported. The system is capable of synchronously acquiring, and logging on a flash memory bank, four high resolution signals. Thanks to a very careful design of the system architecture and by using robust digital signal processing techniques, two main conflicting issues have been addressed: a high dynamic range, better than 120 dB, usually obtained with high energy demanding converters, and a power consumption as low as 250 mW, hence allowing to easily increase the time of a continuous submarine monitoring session up to 3 months.
