TRANSIENT SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE SIMULATION INCLUDING ENERGY BALANCE EQUATION

1992

An efficient numerical method for the solution of hot‐carrier transport equations describing transient processes in submicrometer semiconductor devices is proposed. The calculations of transient processes in submicrometer MOS transistor were carried out and compared with the results obtained by conventional drift‐diffusion model.

Thermophysical-Property-Based Selection of Tool Protective Coatings for Dry Machining of Steels

2003

A method is proposed for determining the optimum cutting conditions in dry turning of carbon and stainless steels using multilayer coated tools for physical criteria such as the maximum temperature of a cutting tool or maximum heat flux. The modified thermal number describing the tool-chip behavior, is introduced. The correlation between the thermal number and the average tool-chip interface temperature and frictional heat flux is examined for both flat-faced and grooved rake configurations. Although not shown here directly, the thermal barrier effect observed for multilayer coatings with an intermediate Al2O3 layer increases the heat partition to the chip at substantially reduced cutting t…

Computer-assisted orientation and drawing of archaeological pottery.

2018

Archaeologists spend considerable time orienting and drawing ceramic fragments by hand for documentation, to infer their manufacture, the nature of the discovery site and its chronology, and to develop hypotheses about commercial and cultural exchanges, social organisation, resource exploitation, and taphonomic processes. This study presents a survey of existing solutions to the time-consuming problem of orienting and drawing pottery fragments. Orientation is based on the 3D geometry of pottery models, which can now be acquired in minutes with low-cost 3D scanners. Several methods are presented: they are based on normal vectors, or circle fittings, or profile fittings. All these methods see…

Part program automatic check for three axis CNC machines

2001

Abstract The simulation and verification of NC codes for CNC machining is a very important task. The aim of this work is to limit the number of cutting tests needed to verify the right writing of the part program for a CN milling machine in the intent of saving time, human resources and money. This is obtained through the Boolean operation among solids, in AutoCAD environment, of the volume covered by the tool during the operations ruled by the part program.

Finite element modelling of temperature distribution in the cutting zone in turning processes with differently coated tools

2005

Abstract The aim of this study is to check the applicability of various simulation models to obtain finite element solutions of cutting forces, specific cutting energy and adequate temperatures for a range of coated tool materials and defined cutting conditions. Commercial explicit finite element code Thirdwave AdvantEdge has been used in simulations of orthogonal cutting processes performed by means of uncoated carbide and coated tools. The latter were equipped with progressively increasing number of thin layers including TiC, TiN and Al 2 O 3 films deposited onto ISO P20 carbide substrates. Results showing the tool–chip interfacial friction influencing the temperature distribution fields,…

Intelligent robotic cell for Trencad/spl inodot//spl acute/s mosaics manufacturing

2005

The purpose of this paper is the description of an application for the complete automation of a mosaics manufacturing process with irregular random pieces, so called trencad/spl inodot//spl acute/s. An intelligent robotic cell has been implemented by using intelligent methods and pattern recognition techniques to assemble unpredictable objects in an autonomous manner.

Integrated three-dimensional models for noninvasive monitoring and valorization of the Morgantina silver treasure (Sicily)

2016

The Morgantina silver treasure belonging to the Archaeological Museum of Aidone (Sicily) was involved in a three-dimensional (3-D) survey and diagnostics campaign for monitoring the collection over time in anticipation of their temporary transfer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for a period of 4 years. Using a multidisciplinary approach, a scientific and methodological protocol based on noninvasive techniques to achieve a complete and integrated knowledge of the precious items and their conservation state, as well as to increase their valorization, has been developed. All acquired data, i.e., 3-D models, ultraviolet fluorescence, x-ray images, and chemical information, will be…

Empirical mode decomposition and neural network for the classification of electroretinographic data

2013

The processing of biosignals is increasingly being utilized in ambulatory situations in order to extract significant signals' features that can help in clinical diagnosis. However, this task is hampered by the fact that biomedical signals exhibit a complex behaviour characterized by strong non-linear and non-stationary properties that cannot always be perceived by simple visual examination. New processing methods need be considered. In this context, we propose to apply a signal processing method, based on empirical mode decomposition and artificial neural networks, to analyse electroretinograms, i.e. the retinal response to a light flash, with the aim to detect and classify retinal diseases…
