On damping characteristics of frictional hysteresis in pre-sliding range

Frictional hysteresis at relative motion in the pre-sliding range is considered. This effect is characterized by an elasto-plastic interaction, and that on the micro-scale, between two rubbing surfaces in contact that gives rise to nonlinear friction force. The pre-sliding friction force yields hysteresis in displacement. In this study, the damping characteristics of frictional hysteresis are analyzed. It is worth noting that we exclude the viscous damping mechanisms and focus on the pure hysteresis damping to be accounted in the friction modeling. The luminescence properties of ZnO nanopowders

Pure and Al3+ doped ZnO nanopowders were studied by means of time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. The powders were synthesized by hydrothermal and plasma methods. These powders were used as a raw material for vaporization-condensation process inside the Solar reactor. The commercially available ZnO nanopowder was studied for a comparison. Exciton to defect band luminescence intensity ratio was estimated in different types of ZnO nanopowders. It was found that nanopowders with whiskers morphology show superlinear luminescence intensity depending on excitation density. The observed effect depends on the average nanoparticle size and on the powder morphology.
Comparison of effects on crustaceans: carbon nanoparticles and molybdenum compounds nanowires

Carbon nanomaterials (CNM) and molybdenum compound nanostructures are materials with various applications yet little is known regarding the toxicity of these nanoparticles in pristine form in aquatic environment. Daphnia magna standard acute toxicity test (EN ISO 6341:1996; freshwater) and Artemia salina standard acute toxicity test (ArtoxKit standard method; 15 ppt saltwater) were applied to assess the toxicity of non-modified CNM and molybdenum compound nanowires in water. It has been observed that CNM are more toxic in freshwater suspensions and somewhat more toxic than the tested molybdenum compound nanowires.
Determination of defect content and defect profile in semiconductor heterostructures

In this article we present an overview of the technique to obtain the defects depth profile and width of a deposited layer and multilayer based on positron annihilation spectroscopy. In particular we apply the method to ZnO and ZnO/ZnCdO layers deposited on sapphire substrates. After introducing some terminology we first calculate the trend that the W/S parameters of the Doppler broadening measurements must follow, both in a qualitative and quantitative way. From this point we extend the results to calculate the width and defect profiles in deposited layer samples.
Supercontinuum generation in Ge-doped Y-shaped microstructured tapered fiber

We have investigated the generation of supercontinuum in tapered Y-shaped fibers in the nanosecond pump regime. This fiber used to fabricate the tapers has, in addition, a Ge-doped core which enhances the nonlinearity of the material and the Raman gain. The fiber was pumped at 1064 nm in the ns pump regime (0.6 ns pulses and up to 3.2 kW peak power). The taper had a uniform waist of 0.9 μm diameter and 130 mm length, and the adiabatic transitions were 110 mm long. A flat spectrum spanning from 420 nm to 1870 nm was obtained using a single tapered fiber.
Optical properties of the low-molecular amorphous azochromophores and their application in holography

The films based on the low-molecular amorphous azochromophore 2-(3-(4-((4- (Ethyl(2-(trityloxy)ethyl)amino)phenyl)diazenyl)styryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene) malononitrile (IWK-2M) were prepared. The optical properties of the material, such as transmittance and reflection spectra of the film, sensitivity to polarization holographic recording by two wavelengths (405 and 532 nm) were studied. Flexural properties of the epoxy resin filled with single and hybrid carbon nanofillers

Abstract The aim of this paper was to estimate the effect of moisture and temperature on the flexural properties of the epoxy filled with single and hybrid carbon nanofillers (CNTs and CNFs) and to reveal the most environmentally stable NC. Water absorption at 70 °C until equilibrium moisture content and heating at 70 °C for 4 weeks were followed by freezing at -20 °C for 8 weeks. Microstructural characterization of optical images revealed homogeneous dispersion of all carbon nanofillers in the epoxy resin at microscale. Damping by bulk and shear viscosity for confined acoustic phonons of a spherical virus in water

International audience; A sphere-like virus in water is modeled as a homogeneous isotropic elastic continuum sphere in contact with an infinite viscous compressible Newtonian fluid. The frequencies and damping of the confined vibrational modes of the sphere are calculated for the material parameters of a virus in water. While the effects of viscosity are found to be negligible for a virus-like sphere of macroscopic size, for nanoscale viruses both the frequency and damping of the vibrational modes are significantly affected by the viscosity of the water. Furthermore, both shear viscosity and bulk viscosity play an important role.
Knots in finite memory walks

We investigate the occurrence and size of knots in a continuum polymer model with finite memory via Monte Carlo simulations. Excluded volume interactions are local and extend only to a fixed number of successive beads along the chain, ensuring that at short length scales the excluded volume effect dominates, while at longer length scales the polymer behaves like a random walk. As such, this model may be useful for understanding the behavior of polymers in a melt or semi-dilute solution, where exactly the same crossover is believed to occur.
