Zn-Enhanced Asp-Rich Antimicrobial Peptides N-Terminal Coordination by Zn(II) and Cu(II), Which Distinguishes Cu(II) Binding to Different Peptides

2021

The antimicrobial activity of surfactant-associated anionic peptides (SAAPs), which are isolated from the ovine pulmonary surfactant and are selective against the ovine pathogen Mannheimia haemolytica, is strongly enhanced in the presence of Zn(II) ions. Both calorimetry and ITC measurements show that the unique Asp-only peptide SAAP3 (DDDDDDD) and its analogs SAAP2 (GDDDDDD) and SAAP6 (GADDDDD) have a similar micromolar affinity for Zn(II), which binds to the N-terminal amine and Asp carboxylates in a net entropically-driven process. All three peptides also bind Cu(II) with a net entropically-driven process but with higher affinity than they bind Zn(II) and coordination that involves the N…

Pore structure and water transfer in Pietra d’Aspra limestone: A neutronographic study

2020

Neutron radiography (NR) was here applied to study the effects of two different commercially available consolidants on the water absorption properties in a particular type of limestone (biocalcarenite), known as Pietra d’Aspra stone, which is one of the most extensively used lithotypes in Sicilian Baroque buildings. Our attention was mainly focused on the evaluation, using a fast and nondestructive visualization of water motion through capillarity, of the effectiveness of such layers as consolidating agents in view of preserving and maintaining both old and modern structures. The biocalcarenite was treated with nanosilica (Nano Estel®) and nanolime (CaLoSil®) by brushing it until full satur…

Stability and l1-gain analysis for positive 2D T–S fuzzy state-delayed systems in the second FM model

2014

This paper considers the problems of delay-dependent stability and l"1-gain analysis for a class of positive two-dimensional (2D) Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy linear systems with state delays described by the second FM model. Firstly, the co-positive type Lyapunov function method is applied to establish sufficient conditions of asymptotical stability for the addressed positive 2D T-S fuzzy system. Then, the l"1-gain performance analysis for the positive 2D T-S fuzzy delayed system is studied. All the obtained results are formulated in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) which are computationally tractable. Finally, an illustrative example is given to verify the effectiveness of the p…

Full Sliding “Adhesive-Like” Contact of V-Belts

2002

Abstract Analysis of power transmission in a belt drive consisting of e. g. two pulleys might be treated as a boundary value problem. Tight side tension FT, slack side tension FS and the wrap angle α are the three natural boundary conditions. In the literature, theories are developed where seating and unseating as well as the power transmitting part of the contact are considered. The solutions presented so far don’t fulfil the boundary conditions properly, since a certain tension ratio FT/FS is associated with a certain contact angle and not an a priori specified one. It appears that a new type of full sliding solution must be introduced to handle the boundary condition problem. During part…

Work Group 5 Position Paper: Strategies for Pre-service Physics Teacher Education

2022

Abstract Pre-service physics teacher education is key in preparing prospective physics teachers to effectively support student learning and interest development alike. In order to do this, pre-service teachers must acquire, among other things, a profound teaching-oriented content knowledge and positive stance regarding teaching and motivation towards teaching. However, there are many more issues related to pre-service physics teacher education. In this paper, we report about some questions raised and answers proposed about this subject during the GIREP Malta 2020 Webinar Work Group 5 discussions.

Expressing Professional Identity through Blogging - A Case Study of Blogging in the Study of the Subject of Norwegian in Pre-School Teacher Education

2015

Abstract This article shows how blogging was used in a course in Norwegian in pre-school teacher education, and investigates how professional identity was expressed in the blogs. We investigate the students’ use of the affordances of the blog medium, and connect their expressions to the five competencies of pre-school teachers expressed in the Norwegian framework plan for this education (subject, didactic, social, developmental and ethical competence). Connections between professional identity, subject content and uses of ICT are thus drawn up.

Laser spectroscopy of the ground-state hyperfine structure in H-like and Li-like bismuth

2014

The LIBELLE experiment performed at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at the GSI Helmholtz Center in Darmstadt aims for the determination of the ground state hyperfine (HFS) transitions and lifetimes in hydrogen-like (209Bi82+) and lithium-like (209Bi80+) bismuth. The study of HFS transitions in highly charged ions enables precision tests of QED in extreme electric and magnetic fields otherwise not attainable in laboratory experiments. While the HFS transition in H-like bismuth was already observed in earlier experiments at the ESR, the LIBELLE experiment succeeded for the first time to measure the HFS transition in Li-like bismuth in a laser spectroscopy experiment.

Monadic Second-Order Logic over Rectangular Pictures and Recognizability by Tiling Systems

1996

Abstract It is shown that a set of pictures (rectangular arrays of symbols) is recognized by a finite tiling system iff it is definable in existential monadic second-order logic. As a consequence, finite tiling systems constitute a notion of recognizability over two-dimensional inputs which at the same time generalizes finite-state recognizability over strings and also matches a natural logic. The proof is based on the Ehrenfeucht–Fraisse technique for first-order logic and an implementation of “threshold counting” within tiling systems.

CT Radiomic Features and Clinical Biomarkers for Predicting Coronary Artery Disease

2023

AbstractThis study was aimed to investigate the predictive value of the radiomics features extracted from pericoronaric adipose tissue — around the anterior interventricular artery (IVA) — to assess the condition of coronary arteries compared with the use of clinical characteristics alone (i.e., risk factors). Clinical and radiomic data of 118 patients were retrospectively analyzed. In total, 93 radiomics features were extracted for each ROI around the IVA, and 13 clinical features were used to build different machine learning models finalized to predict the impairment (or otherwise) of coronary arteries. Pericoronaric radiomic features improved prediction above the use of risk factors alon…

Anti-Aging Physiological Roles of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor and Its Dietary Regulators

2021

The vast majority of the literature on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor is concerned with its functions in xenobiotic detoxification. However, in the course of evolution, this receptor had to have physiological (rather than toxicological) functions. Our aim was to review the aryl hydrocarbon receptor’s role in the physiological functions involved in aging. This study was performed by searching the MEDLINE and Google Academic databases. A total of 34 articles were selected that focused specifically on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and aging, the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and physiological functions, and the combination of both. This receptor’s main physiological functions (mediated by the modul…
