Recent developments in the manipulation of magnetic domain walls in CoFeB–MgO wires for applications to high-density nonvolatile memories
2015
Abstract The recent discovery that magnetic domain walls can be moved under a small current without any magnetic field opens a perspective for a paradigm shift in mass storage design. However, several fundamental questions must be answered before the technology can be considered feasible. This review covers the current understanding of domain wall (DW) propagation in CoFeB–MgO structures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These films exhibit a very low density of pinning centers and can be integrated in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions, making them very promising for manipulating multiple domain walls in ultra-high-density spintronic devices. Several important issues are addressed: the physic…
Towards Dynamic Scripted pNFS Layouts
2012
Today's network file systems consist of a variety of complex subprotocols and backend storage classes. The data is typically spread over multiple data servers to achieve higher levels of performance and reliability. A metadata server is responsible for creating the mapping of a file to these data servers. It is hard to map application specific access patterns to storage system specific features, which can result in a degraded IO performance. We present an NFSv4.1/pNFS protocol extension that integrates the client's ability to provide hints and I/O advices to metadata servers. We define multiple storage classes and allow the client to choose which type of storage fits best for its desired ac…
The data acquisition system for the ANTARES neutrino telescope
2006
The ANTARES neutrino telescope is being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a large three-dimensional array of photo-multiplier tubes. The data acquisition system of the detector takes care of the digitisation of the photo-multiplier tube signals, data transport, data filtering, and data storage. The detector is operated using a control program interfaced with all elements. The design and the implementation of the data acquisition system are described.
Optimal Integration of Hybrid Supercapacitor and IPT System for a Free-Catenary Tramway
2019
The aim of the paper is the study of an optimal integration of a supercapacitor-based storage system and inductive power transfer system for the free-catenary operation of a tramway. Starting from the definition of the topology of inductive power transfer system, we propose and analyze a design procedure for the pads of the inductive power system. In the second part of the paper, an optimal integration strategy for the correct size of on-board supercapacitors and the power of the inductive energy transfer are proposed. The results obtained by means of numerical simulations are discussed. © 2018 IEEE.
Creation, storage, and on-demand release of optical quantum states with a negative Wigner function
2013
Highly nonclassical quantum states of light, characterized by Wigner functions with negative values, have been created so far only in a heralded fashion. In this case, the desired output emerges rarely and randomly from a quantum-state generator. An important example is the heralded production of high-purity single-photon states, typically based on some nonlinear optical interaction. In contrast, on-demand single-photon sources were also reported, exploiting the quantized level structure of matter systems. These sources, however, lead to highly impure output states, composed mostly of vacuum. While such impure states may still exhibit certain single-photon-like features such as anti-bunchin…
Controlled transport of stored light
2020
Controlled manipulation, storage, and retrieval of quantum information is essential for quantum communication and computing. Quantum memories for light, realized with cold atomic samples as the storage medium, are prominent for their high storage efficiencies and lifetime. We demonstrate the controlled transport of stored light over 1.2 mm in such a storage system and show that the transport process and its dynamics only have a minor effect on the coherence of the storage. Extending the presented concept to longer transport distances and augmenting the number of storage sections will allow for the development of novel quantum devices such as optical racetrack memories or optical quantum reg…
All-Optical Storage of Phase-Sensitive Quantum States of Light.
2019
We experimentally demonstrate storage and on-demand release of phase-sensitive, photon-number superposition states of the form $\alpha |0\rangle + \beta e^{i\theta} |1\rangle$ for an optical quantized oscillator mode. For this purpose, we introduce a phase-probing mechanism to a storage system composed of two concatenated optical cavities, which was previously employed for storage of phase-insensitive single-photon states [Phys. Rev. X 3, 041028 (2013)]. This is the first demonstration of all-optically storing highly nonclassical and phase-sensitive quantum states of light. The strong nonclassicality of the states after storage becomes manifest as a negative region in the corresponding Wign…
The Performance of Belle II Data Acquisition System in the First Physics Run
2019
The Belle II experiment is a new generation B-factory experiment at KEK in Japan aiming at the search for New Physics in a huge sample of B-meson dacays. The commissioning of the SuperKEKB accelerator was started in 2017 (Phase 1), and then a pilot run with outer detectors was performed in 2018 (Phase 2). From March this year, an operation with the full detector has been started for the physics data taking (Phase 3). The Belle II data acquisiton system (DAQ) is now fully working in the Phase 3 run. The system consists of the trigger timing distribution system, the common readout modules (COPPER) with the unified optical data link to the detector front end, the readout PCs and the network sw…
A hybrid storage system for wireless sensor nodes powered with energy harvesting
2019
With the recent development of Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), research and industry have been increasingly focusing on the opportumty of collecting the energy arising from the environment. The Energy Harvesting provides the possibility to supply devices which are placed out of reach or in hazardous spots, e.g. the Wireless Sensor Nodes. Among the different parts belonging to an Energy Harvesting system, the power management network represents a challenging topic. In this paper a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) usable for a WSN powered with Energy Harvesting, based on a battery-capacitor integration, is presented. The experimental results concerning the asse…
Ev charging station at university campus
2017
This paper faces the technical and economic challenges related to the design of a green recharge area for electric vehicles at the Campus of Palermo, Italy, with the aim of reduce both costs and pollution connected to the charging process. Based on the behaviour of the student population, the electrical load is identified and two possible solutions are evaluated to manage the peak load: an orientation of the panels increasing the power at defined time and the use of a storage system. The main strength and weakness points of two systems are investigated by taking into account the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), which reaches 75.3 â¬/MWh for the orientation of panel and 103 â¬/MWh for stor…
