Linking content and technology: on the geography of innovation networks in the Bergen media cluster

2017

This paper deals with the geography of innovation networks and analyses combinatorial knowledge dynamics from a single cluster perspective. Addressing firms in the media cluster in Bergen, Norway, we examine how and from where companies acquire and combine different types of knowledge for their innovation activities. The empirical analysis, which is based on structured interviews with 22 media companies, identifies two main types of cluster firms: media content providers that rely heavily on symbolic knowledge and media technology providers that draw mostly on synthetic knowledge. Even though they draw on different knowledge bases, the two types of firms are strongly interlinked in their in…

Monitoring of the action of drugs in melanoma cells by dynamic laser speckle

2014

Abstract. This work presents the development of a protocol based on the dynamic laser speckle designed tomonitor the reaction of cancer cells of line MEL-RC08 to the application of the drug Colcemid in two differentconcentrations: 0.2 and 0.4 μg∕mL. The protocol was designed using the forward scattering approach with anHe-Ne laser of 632.8 nm illuminating the samples, a control, and two variations of Colcemid, being monitoredalong 8 h. The data were analyzed numerically in the time and in the frequency domain, and the results pre-sented the ability of the technique to monitor the action of the drug, particularly Colcemid (0.4 μg∕mL). © 2014Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers …

Teacher orchestration of classroom interaction in science: exploring dialogic and authoritative passages in whole-class discussions

2019

Whereas science is fundamentally a result of a dialogic debate, the authoritative approach has been conceived of as a fundamental part of school science. Dialogic interactions encompass the mutual appreciation of different ideas manifested in teacher supportiveness toward students and, in authoritative interactions, the focus is more on the science’s or teacher’s point of view. Whereas dialogic and authoritative interactions have been viewed as oppositional in recent educational research, authoritative interactions could well be the seed for and give strength and meaning to dialogic interactions, and thus, to the overall dialogue. The focus in this study is on the interplay between authorit…

Activities using blackboard, pens and paper

1998

Dictogloss Language Listening comprehension Level Elementary upwards Age Any This is a well established dictation-based activity which helps to develop conscious listening skills in addition to an awareness of phrase and sentence structures. Procedure Choose a sentence suitable for the level of the class. This might be a sentence from a coursebook, but if so, make sure it is one which is not yet familiar to your students. An example sentence is given below. Tell the class that you will read this sentence to them once only. They should write down the key words as you read. You should not have to repeat the sentence, but with a large class you might like to read it once at the front of the ro…

CADEM: calculate X-ray diffraction of epitaxial multilayers

2017

This article presents a powerful yet simple program, based on the general one-dimensional kinematic X-ray diffraction (XRD) theory, which calculates the XRD patterns of tailor-made multilayers and thus enables quantitative comparison of measured and calculated XRD data. As the multilayers are constructed layer by layer, the final material stack can be entirely arbitrary.

Using FOCUS to solve zeolite structures from three-dimensional electron diffraction data

2013

The programFOCUS[Grosse-Kunstleve, McCusker & Baerlocher (1997).J. Appl. Cryst.30, 985–995] was originally developed to solve zeolite structures from X-ray powder diffraction data. It uses zeolite-specific chemical information (three-dimensional 4-connected framework structure with known bond distances and angles) to supplement the diffraction data. In this way, it is possible to compensate, at least in part, for the ambiguity of the reflection intensities resulting from reflection overlap, and the program has proven to be quite successful. Recently, advances in electron microscopy have led to the development of automated diffraction tomography (ADT) and rotation electron diffraction (R…

An examination of teacher-student interactions in inclusive classrooms: teacher interviews and classroom observations

2013

Teacher–student interactions in 17 inclusive classrooms were examined using a mixed-methods approach that involved quantitative analysis of interactions recorded during classroom observations and follow-up interviews with seven general educators. Observational findings suggest that classrooms were organised along traditional lines with the vast majority of interactions provided by general educators to the whole class, followed by brief intervals of 1 : 1 interactions directed towards individual students, most frequently children with disabilities. Interview findings suggest that teachers were aware of the greater individual attention devoted to students with disabilities and described a num…

Elliptic equations involving the $1$-Laplacian and a subcritical source term

2017

In this paper we deal with a Dirichlet problem for an elliptic equation involving the $1$-Laplacian operator and a source term. We prove that, when the growth of the source is subcritical, there exist two bounded nontrivial solutions to our problem. Moreover, a Pohozaev type identity is proved, which holds even when the growth is supercritical. We also show explicit examples of our results.

Triple solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems driven by a non-homogeneous operator

2020

Abstract Some multiplicity results for a parametric nonlinear Dirichlet problem involving a nonhomogeneous differential operator of p -Laplacian type are given. Via variational methods, the article furnishes new contributions and completes some previous results obtained for problems considering other types of differential operators and/or nonlinear terms satisfying different asymptotic conditions.

Some qualitative properties for the total variation flow

2002

We prove the existence of a finite extinction time for the solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the total variation flow. For the Neumann problem, we prove that the solutions reach the average of its initial datum in finite time. The asymptotic profile of the solutions of the Dirichlet problem is also studied. It is shown that the profiles are nonzero solutions of an eigenvalue-type problem that seems to be unexplored in the previous literature. The propagation of the support is analyzed in the radial case showing a behaviour entirely different to the case of the problem associated with the p-Laplacian operator. Finally, the study of the radially symmetric case allows us to point out othe…
