Employers' intention to hire highly educated foreign workforce in the Kokkola region : implications for higher education
2015
The rational for this research is to find out the intentions of employers to hire highly educated foreign workforce in the Kokkola region. The research analyses how employers have prepared themselves for meeting the diverse needs of future employees, how strongly and on what basis employers are committed to recruit a foreign workforce, how many they have recruited so far, and what the contribution of Centria University of Applied Sciences could be to improve recruitment of a foreign highly educated workforce in the region. Internationalisation of higher education in Finland has led to the fact that degree programmes offered in English both in traditional universities and in universities of …
Applying Student Development Theories: Enhancing International Student Academic Success and Integration
2019
Student development theories (SDT) focus on the growth and change occurring in students while attending higher education. In this article, we propose that the application of student development theories supports holistic development in international students and helps us understand international students’ academic success and integration. We outline a combination of student development models, derived from SDT, and interact them with concepts from international student mobility and migration (ISM). These models, when applied to student services, may assist higher education institutions (HEIs) in designing student services for international students enhancing academic success and integration.
Age of Information Based URLLC-enabled UAV Wireless Communications System
2022
This paper considers an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) communication network, where UAV operate as an aerial mobile relay between a source and a destination of the network. To capture the “timelines” of the received information at the destination node, a new performance metric named age of information (AoI) is considered. In addition, a short packet communication scheme maintains low latency in the proposed UAV wireless communication system. The finite block-length theory investigates the performances of short packet communications scheme in the UAV-assisted wireless communications system. In this paper, the Average Age of Information (AAoI) is estimated by applying the Stochastic Hybrid Sy…
Den Virtuelle Matematikkskolen - Ungdomstrinnet : En studie av hvilke pedagogiske konsekvenser bruk av nettressursen DVM-U kan føre med seg
2016
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 Many lower secondary school students struggle with mathematics and with motivation in the subject. To improve student achievement and motivation in mathematics, The Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education and The Norwegian Centre for Mathematics Education have developed an online learning resource that contains mathematical examples, exercises and games, called The Virtual School of Mathematics – Lower Secondary (DVM-U). The Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education suggest that DVM-U can be used in preparation of a topic, or as something students can work with if they do not benefit on a satisfactory level from the classroom teaching…
Tilpasset opplæring i matematikk på ungdomsskolen : to læreres begrunnelser for sine tilpasninger
2016
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The theme of this thesis is adapted education with an emphasis on adapting the teaching of mathematics. I have also decided to direct my attention toward students with low attainers. My research question is: "What arguments gives two mathematics teachers in their adaptations in teaching students with low attainers in middle school?" The study discusses how teachers adapt lessons to students with low attainers in the subject. The empirical basically are two mathematics teachers who teach in the same middle school. In this study I have used qualitative methods. The data is collected through a semi-structured interview. The aim has…
Pedagogical practices predicting perceived learning of social skills among university students
2022
The aim of this study was to examine what kinds of pedagogical practices predict perceived learning of university students’ social skills in classes where these skills are not set as learning outcomes. Data were collected from students of various disciplines by means of a questionnaire and then analysed using regression analysis. Students’ learning of social skills was explained by pedagogical factors related to 1) the modes of teaching and learning, 2) the features of the constructivist learning environment, 3) the features of the integrative pedagogy, and 4) the circumstances pertaining to the atmosphere of the learning environments involved in their studies. Factors belonging to three of…
”Ottakaa tämä edelleen kielikoulutuksena”: Lukioon valmistavan koulutuksen ja aikuisten perusopetuksen opettajat ja opiskelijat koulutusten tavoittei…
2016
This article examines how teachers and students in 1) preparatory training for upper secondary school and in 2) basic education for adults (comprehensive school) talk about the objectives of these forms of education. More specifically, the analysis focuses on the talk about language and language learning as part of educational objectives. The data come from two ethnographic research projects and consist of video recording of classroom interaction and interviews. The main method of analysis is membership categorization analysis (see Baker 1997, 2002; Nikander 2010, 2012). The focus is thus on the categories that come up in the talk about learning objectives related to language and language l…
Applying Affordances Scale as a Design Method : Case Virtual Reality Course Design
2021
Practitioners including designers and teachers developing Virtual Reality (VR) courses are facing a question regarding the strengths and subject areas in which VR-enriched courses might have the highest potential compared to conventional courses. The present study develops a survey scale to assess and match industry managers’ requirements for skills for working life. The same scale was surveyed among two different groups of higher education students participating in conventional courses and a VR-aided course. The results indicate that the industry requirements were higher than met by the both course types. However, the results highlight a set of skills for which the VR courses have the high…

Using a blended approach to enrich MOOCs on Finnish education
2021
Blended education embraces various combinations of face-to-face and online teaching. It has become a normal part of higher education degree programmes. Since the late 1990s, the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä (JYUOpen) has been offering online and blended education for its rapidly growing number of students. For many years now, Finnish education has ranked high in PISA research. Furthermore, the University of Jyväskylä has been successful in global rankings, especially in the field of education (Shanghai Ranking: 36, QS World University Rankings: 51–100 and Times Higher Education: 67). In order to present the success factors of the Finnish education system, we offered our fi…
