Temperature adaptation influences the aggregation state of hemocyanin from Astacus leptodactylus.

When Astacus leptodactylus were kept at various temperatures for several weeks, different ratios between di-hexameric and hexameric hemocyanins were observed in their hemolymph. The higher the temperature the more hexamers were present. This long-term adaptation to different temperatures or/and to temperature-induced pH-shifts as observed in the hemolymph has different effects on the expression of subunit types building up hexamers and those which covalently link two hexamers within the di-hexamers. The oxygen binding behaviour of di-hexameric hemocyanins from cold and warm adapted animals do not show differences with respect to affinity, Bohr effect and cooperativity.

Background Due to the current poaching crisis in Africa, increasing numbers of white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) require opioid immobilisation for medical interventions or management procedures. Alarmingly, the results of both blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry regularly indicate severe hypoxaemia. Yet, the recovery of the animals is uneventful. Thus, neither of the techniques seems to represent the real oxygenation level. Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is the most potent activator of 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase, a key regulatory enzyme of glycolysis in animal tissues. A relationship between tolerance to dehydration of rice cell lines and ability for ABA synthesis under stress

Plant dehydration is commonly caused by some adverse environmental conditions such as salinity, drought and freezing. As the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is involved in responses to water stress, we studied its putative relationship with the degree of tolerance to these abiotic stresses. For this purpose we used cell lines that had been established from mature embryos of rice (Oryza sativa L, cvs. Bahia and Bomba), and selected by their high (L-T) or low (L-S) levels of tolerance to each type of stress. A model for the effect of pH on the growth of chalk yeasts.

Hyphopichia burtonii, Pichia anomala, and Saccharomycopsis fibuligera were isolated from spoiled packaged sliced bread. These chalk yeasts were characterized by a wide range of pH for which growth was almost optimum. Thus, the curve growth vs pH exhibited plateau and sharp profiles close to the minimum and the maximum pH. This study described a chalk yeast model (CYM) for the effect of pH derived from a new germination model for fungi (Dantigny, P., Nanguy, S., P.-M., Judet-Correia, D., and Bensoussan, M. 2011, International Journal of Food Microbiology, 146, 176-181). DC polarographic reduction of chloroguanide hydrochloride.

Chloroguanide hydrochloride, an antimalarial drug, shows one well-defined DC polarographic wave in Britton-Robinson buffered media. In the pH range 3–9 the observed reduction wave is related to the reduction of the two azomethine centers on the monoprotonated biguanide group (BH+). The effects of pH and other experimental variables on the limiting current and half-wave potentials as well as the reduction mechanism are discussed.

Simultaneous determination of 4-nitroanisole, 4-nitrophenol, and 4-nitrocatechol by phase-sensitive ac polarography.

Abstract Phase‐sensitive ac polarography was applied to the simultaneous quantitative determination of 4‐nitroanisole, 4‐nitrophenol and 4‐nitrocatechol in alkaline solutions. Certain experimental precautions are necessary to determine each compound in the presence of the other two. Thus, 4‐nitrocatechol is determined indirectly by forming a yellow ratio chelate with cupric ions, whereas 4‐nitroanisole is determined directly by the reduction waves of the nitro group. For the determination of 4‐nitrophenol, the interference by the simultaneously present 4‐nitrocatechol must be eliminated by masking it by the addition of magnesium ions.
