Relaxation and charge transport in mixtures of zwitterionic polymers and inorganic salts

2009

Dielectric spectroscopy is employed to analyze the molecular dynamics and the charge transport in mixtures of zwitterionic polymers of the type poly(3-[N-(omega-methacryloyloxyalkyl)-N, N-dimethylammonio]propanesulfonate) with sodium iodide in the frequency range of 10(2) Hz-10(7) Hz and in the temperature range of 110 K-400 K. The amount of inorganic salt added varies from 0-200 mol-% relative to the number of zwitterionic groups present in the polymer, contributing strongly to the conductivity. One relaxation process is observed whose relaxation rate depends strongly on the length of the aliphatic spacer between the polymethacrylate main chain and the zwitterionic group. Exhibiting an Arr…

Synthesis of Polymer Colloids Using Polymerizable Surfactants

2001

A series of new anionic surfactants were prepared by reacting a polymerizable alcohol with either maleic or succinic anhydride, as well as sulfosuccinic anhydride, resulting in either bireactive or monoreactive surfactants, either carboxylated or sulfonated. The synthesis presented and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) determined. These compounds were engaged in the emulsion polymerization of styrene in batch and also in semi-batch seeded copolymerization producing core-shell latexes. The core was a polystyrene seed prepared using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), thoroughly purified through ion exchange resins. The seed was then swollen overnight with a small amount of a 1 : 1 mixture o…

Influence of water, temperature and sucrose on dynamics in glassy starch-based products studied by low field 1H NMR

2009

Abstract In this study, the influence of both water content and temperature on the mobility of glassy starch-based matrices (starch alone or mixed with sucrose at the ratio 0% to 20% db) were studied using time domain 1 H NMR. The 2nd moment M 2 , and transversal relaxation time T 2 ∗ were used to study the molecular mobility of the rigid and mobile fraction of the NMR signal, respectively. The molecular mobility of the protons constituting the samples increased with water content (up to 13% wb) at all temperatures. For a given water content, both rigid and mobile protons exhibited a lower mobility in the presence of sucrose. When mobility characteristic parameters, M 2 second moment values…

Enthalpy and Entropy Contributions to Solvent Quality and Inversions of Heat Effects with Polymer Concentration

2006

Vapor pressures above the solutions of polystyrene in either cyclohexane (32-60 °C) or toluene (10-70 °C) have been measured by a combination of head space sampling and gas chromatography as a function of the volume fraction φ of the polymer. The thus obtained Flory-Huggins interaction parameters Χ (φ; T) were complemented by data for three other systems (tert-butyl acetate/polystyrene, cyclohexane/poly(vinyl methyl ether), 2-propanol/poly(butyl methacrylate)) reported in the literature and analyzed in terms of their enthalpy and entropy parts Χ H and Χ s . Furthermore these experimental findings were modeled by means of an approach splitting the mixing process conceptually into two parts a…

An Analysis of the Concentration Effects on Elution Volumes by Using the Preferential Solvation Parameter in Two SEC Packings

2002

Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) elution behavior of different solvent/polymer systems has been analyzed from chromatographic, thermodynamic, and hydrodynamic points of view in two organic column packings based on polystyrene/divinylbenzene (PS/DVB) copolymer, μ-styragel and TSK-Gel H HR . Although both packings present similar chromatographic properties, some differences arise when eluting the same systems. The values of the adsorption distribution coefficients, K p , have been correlated with the preferential solvation coefficient, λ (see Figure), for both packings, showing that those systems with lower and negative λ values (denoting higher preferential solvation of the polymer by the…

Partially Quarternized Amino Functional Poly(methacrylate) Terpolymers: Versatile Drug Permeability Modifiers

2011

Partially quarternized poly(methacrylate) terpolymers (Q-BBMCs) have been synthesized, based on the basic butylated methacrylate copolymer (BBMC/EUDRAGIT E), an excipient approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to date mainly applied for tablet coatings. Via straightforward polymer modification reactions, a series of Q-BBMCs with quarternization degrees of 22%, 42%, and 65% has been prepared. Apical to basolateral transport across Caco-2 cell monolayers was investigated, employing the paracellular transported compounds trospium and mannitol. At pH 6.5 quarternization resulted in increased permeation enhancement up to 2.8-fold compared to BBMC, that is, up to 7.3-fold compared…

Evaluation of Charge‐Regulated Supramolecular Copolymerization to Tune the Time Scale for Oxidative Disassembly of β‐Sheet Comonomers

2019

A multistimuli-responsive supramolecular copolymerization is reported. The copolymerization is driven by hydrogen bond encoded β-sheet-based charge co-assembly into 1D nanorods in water, using glutamic acid or lysine residues in either of the peptide comonomers. The incorporation of methionine as hydrophobic amino acid supports β-sheet formation, but oxidation of the thioether side-chain to a sulfoxide functional group destabilizes the β-sheet ordered domains and induces disassembly of the supramolecular polymers. Using H2 O2 as reactive oxygen species, the time scale and kinetics of the oxidative disassembly are probed. Compared to the charge neutral homopolymers, it is found that the oxid…

Functionalization of Active Ester-Based Polymersomes for Enhanced Cell Uptake and Stimuli-Responsive Cargo Release

2016

Poly(2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylamide) (P(DHPMA))-based amphiphilic block copolymers have recently proven to form polymer vesicles (polymersomes). In this work, we further expand their potential by incorporating (i) units for pH-dependent disintegration into the hydrophobic membrane and (ii) mannose as targeting unit into the hydrophilic block. This last step relies on the use of an active ester prepolymer. We confirm the stability of the polymersomes against detergents like Triton X-100 and their low cytotoxicity. The incorporation of 2-(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-yl)ethyl methacrylate into the hydrophobic block (lauryl methacrylate) allows a pH-responsive disintegration for cargo rele…

Secondary Structure-Driven Hydrogelation Using Foldable Telechelic Polymer-Peptide Conjugates.

2018

The synthesis of ABA and ABA' triblock polyethylene glycol-and polysarcosine-peptide conjugates is reported. The A/A' peptides are based on phenylalanine(F)-histidine(H) pentapeptide sequences FHFHF, which promote pH-switchable β-sheet self-assembly into nanorods in water. Only parallel β-sheet-driven folding and intermolecular assembly using ABA triblock polymer-peptide conjugates leads to interstrand cross-linking and hydrogelation, highlighting the impact of supramolecular interactions-directed structure formation at the nano- and mesoscopic level.
