The utilization of cyclophosphazenes as polymer modifiers is reviewed, with particular concern to their exploitation as versatile chain extenders, possibly for recycle problems, crosslinkers, to enhance mechanical properties of polymeric materials, branchers, to selectively introduce ramifications in linear polymers, and compatibilizers, to favor the formation of blends between originally incompatible organic macromolecules. A Simple Noise Model with Memory for Biological Systems

A noise source model, consisting of a pulse sequence at random times with memory, is presented. By varying the memory we can obtain variable randomness of the stochastic process. The delay time between pulses, i. e. the noise memory, produces different kinds of correlated noise ranging from white noise, without delay, to quasi-periodical process, with delay close to the average period of the pulses. The spectral density is calculated. This type of noise could be useful to describe physical and biological systems where some delay is present. Low intrinsic carrier density LSMO/Alq3/AlOx/Co organic spintronic devices

The understanding of spin injection and transport in organic spintronic devices is still incomplete, with some experiments showing magnetoresistance and others not detecting it. We have investigated the transport properties of a large number of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum-based organic spintronic devices with an electrical resistance greater than 5 MΩ that did not show magnetoresistance. Their transport properties could be described satisfactorily by known models for organic semiconductors. Formation Kinetics of Mixed Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alkanethiols on GaAs(100)

International audience; We report on the formation kinetics of mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) comprising 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHDA) and 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (MUDO) thiols on GaAs(100) substrates. These compounds were selected for their potential in constructing highly selective and efficient architectures for biosensing applications. Microcalorimeter/EBIT measurements of X-ray spectra of highly charged ions

Spectra of highly charged Ar, Kr, Xe and Fe ions, produced in an Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT), have been recorded in a broad X-ray energy band (0.2 keV to 10 keV) with a microcalorimeter detector. The first analysis of the Kr spectra has been completed and most of the spectral lines have been identified as transitions of B- to Al-like Kr. Line intensity ratios of Fe XVII have been measured and compared with theoretical models.

Conformations and orientational ordering of semiflexible polymers in spherical confinement.

Semiflexible polymers in lyotropic solution confined inside spherical nanoscopic “containers” with repulsive walls are studied by molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory, as a first step to model confinement effects on stiff polymers inside of miniemulsions, vesicles, and cells. It is shown that the depletion effects caused by the monomer-wall repulsion depend distinctly on the radius R of the sphere. Further, nontrivial orientational effects occur when R, the persistence length ℓp, and the contour length L of the polymers are of similar magnitude. Towards high-accuracy mass spectrometry of highly charged short-lived ions at ISOLTRAP

Kluge on the occasion of his 65th birthday anniversary - Jürgen Kluge Special Issue; Multiply charged ions of stable xenon isotopes from a plasma ion source have been mass-selected by the on-line mass separator ISOLDE/CERN and delivered to the triple-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. The doubly charged ions that survived the charge-exchange processes during bunching and ion preparation were transferred to a precision Penning trap for mass determination. Mass values were obtained for the isotopes with mass numbers A=126,129,130,136. They are consistent with previous results except for the case of $^{126}Xe$ where a significant deviation from the literature value was found. …

Magnetized boxes for housing polarized spins in homogeneous fields

Abstract We present novel types of permanently magnetized as well as current powered boxes built from soft-ferromagnetic materials. They provide shielded magnetic fields which are homogeneous within a large fraction of the enclosed volume, thus minimizing size, weight, and costs. For the permanently magnetized solutions, homogenization is achieved either by an optimized distribution of the permanent field sources or by jacketing the field with a soft-ferromagnetic cylindrical shell which is magnetized in parallel to the enclosed field. A discontinuous Galerkin formulation for nonlinear analysis of multilayered shells refined theories

A novel pure penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is proposed for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of multilayered composite plates and shells, modelled via high-order refined theories. The approach allows to build different two-dimensional equivalent single layer structural models, which are obtained by expressing the covariant components of the displacement field through-the-thickness via Taylor’s polynomial expansion of different order. Heat capacity and thermal conductivity of multiferroics Bi1-xPrxFeO3

The heat capacity and thermal conductivity of multiferroics Bi1–xPrxFeO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50) has been studied in the temperature range of 130–800 K. A slight substitution of praseodymium for bismuth is found to lead to a noticeable shift of the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature whilst the heat capacity increases. The temperature dependences of the heat capacity and thermal conductivity exhibit additional anomalies during phase transitions. The experimental results suggest that the excess heat capacity can be attributed to the Schottky effect for three-level states.
