Timescale-dependent stock market comovement: BRICs vs. developed markets

2014

This paper examines the differences in the asset return comovement of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), the other developed economies in their regions (Canada, Hong Kong and Australia) and the major industrialized economies (the U.K., Germany and Japan) with respect to the U.S. for different return periods. The novelty of the paper is that the stock return indices are decomposed to several timescales using wavelet analysis and that the results are further used as inputs for the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) framework, which is used as a measure of comovement. The results propose that the level of stock market comovement depends on regional aspects, the level of d…

Robust estimation of mean electricity consumption curves by sampling for small areas in presence of missing values

2017

In this thesis, we address the problem of robust estimation of mean or total electricity consumption curves by sampling in a finite population for the entire population and for small areas. We are also interested in estimating mean curves by sampling in presence of partially missing trajectories.Indeed, many studies carried out in the French electricity company EDF, for marketing or power grid management purposes, are based on the analysis of mean or total electricity consumption curves at a fine time scale, for different groups of clients sharing some common characteristics.Because of privacy issues and financial costs, it is not possible to measure the electricity consumption curve of eac…

Spelling out consequences : conditional constructions as a means to resist proposals in organisational planning process

2016

Organisational planning processes often materialise as a series of meetings, where the future of the organisation is jointly discussed and negotiated as a part of local decision-making sequences. Using conversation and discourse analytical approaches, this article investigates how proposals concerning the future can also be resisted by employing a specific device, a conditional construction ( if X, then Y). The data for the study originate from a city organisation, whose customer services are being developed. The results show how the conditional constructions work in two interrelated ways. First, by introducing a problematic hypothetical situation, they outline the undesirable consequences…

Genetic dissection of the miR-17∼92 cluster of microRNAs in Myc-induced B-cell lymphomas

2009

The miR-17∼92 cluster is frequently amplified or overexpressed in human cancers and has emerged as the prototypical oncogenic polycistron microRNA (miRNA). miR-17∼92 is a direct transcriptional target of c-Myc, and experiments in a mouse model of B-cell lymphomas have shown cooperation between these two oncogenes. However, both the molecular mechanism underlying this cooperation and the individual miRNAs that are responsible for it are unknown. By using a conditional knockout allele of miR-17∼92, we show here that sustained expression of endogenous miR-17∼92 is required to suppress apoptosis in Myc-driven B-cell lymphomas. Furthermore, we show that among the six miRNAs that are encoded by m…

2014

Langerhans cells (LCs) are dendritic cells (DCs) residing in epithelia, where they critically regulate immunity and tolerance. The p14 adaptor molecule is part of the late endosomal/LAMTOR (lysosomal adaptor and mitogen-activated protein kinase and mammalian target of rapamycin [mTOR] activator/regulator) complex, thereby contributing to the signal transduction of the extracellular signaling-regulated kinase (ERK) and the mTOR cascade. Furthermore, p14 represents an important regulator for endosomal sorting processes within the cell. Mutated, dysfunctional p14 leads to a human immunodeficiency disorder with endosomal/lysosomal defects in immune cells. Because p14 participates in the regulat…

Public capital and productive efficiency in the Spanish regions (1964–89)

1995

The article analyses the evolution of the differences in economic conditions among Spanish regions from the perspective provided by the recent advances made in economic growth empirics. Although convergence is usually established in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA) per capita, in the case of Spain it is of special interest to break it down into three separate elements: activity rate, employment rate, and productivity of labour. Regional differences in unemployment rates, which persist for long periods of time, are identified as a force against convergence. After describing the distinction between conditional and non conditional convergence, the paper considers the role played by the product…

Information decomposition of multichannel EMG to map functional interactions in the distributed motor system

2019

AbstractThe central nervous system needs to coordinate multiple muscles during postural control. Functional coordination is established through the neural circuitry that interconnects different muscles. Here we used multivariate information decomposition of multichannel EMG acquired from 14 healthy participants during postural tasks to investigate the neural interactions between muscles. A set of information measures were estimated from an instantaneous linear regression model and a time-lagged VAR model fitted to the EMG envelopes of 36 muscles. We used network analysis to quantify the structure of functional interactions between muscles and compared them across experimental conditions. Co…

Investigating the mechanisms of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular regulation in orthostatic syncope through an information decomposition strategy

2012

Some previous evidence suggests that postural related syncope is associated with defective mechanisms of cerebrovascular (CB) and cardiovascular (CV) control. We characterized the information processing in short-term CB regulation, from the variability of mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) and mean arterial pressure (AP), and in CV regulation, from the variability of heart period (HP) and systolic AP (SAP), in ten young subjects developing orthostatic syncope in response to prolonged head-up tilt testing. We exploited a novel information-theoretic approach that decomposes the information associated with a variability series into three amounts: the information stored in the series, the…

Univariate and multivariate conditional entropy measures for the characterization of short-term cardiovascular complexity under physiological stress

2017

Objective: A defining feature of physiological systems under the neuroautonomic regulation is their dynamical complexity. The most common approach to assess physiological complexity from short-term recordings, i.e. to compute the rate of entropy generation of an individual system by means of measures of conditional entropy (CE), does not consider that complexity may change when the investigated system is part of a network of physiological interactions. This study aims at extending the concept of short-term complexity towards the perspective of network physiology, defining multivariate CE measures whereby multiple physiological processes are accounted for in the computation of entropy rates.…

Intralocus tactical conflict: Genetic correlations between fighters and sneakers of the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus

2015

Males and females differ in their phenotypic optima for many traits, and as the majority of genes are expressed in both sexes, some alleles can be beneficial to one sex but harmful to the other (intralocus sexual conflict; ISC). ISC theory has recently been extended to intrasexual dimorphisms, where certain alleles may have opposite effects on the fitness of males of different morphs that employ alternative reproductive tactics (intralocus tactical conflict; ITC). Here, we use a half-sib breeding design to investigate the genetic basis for ISC and ITC in the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus. We found positive heritabilities and intersexual genetic correlations for almost all traits investigat…
