Role of nuclear factor-κB and heme oxygenase-1 in the mechanism of action of an anti-inflammatory chalcone derivative in RAW 264.7 cells

2004

The synthetic chalcone 3',4',5',3,4,5-hexamethoxy-chalcone (CH) is an anti-inflammatory compound able to reduce nitric oxide (NO) production by inhibition of inducible NO synthase protein synthesis. In this work, we have studied the mechanisms of action of this compound. CH (10-30 microm) prevents the overproduction of NO in RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (1 microg ml(-1)) due to the inhibition of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation. We have shown that treatment of cells with CH results in diminished degradation of the NF-kappaB-IkappaB complex leading to inhibition of NF-kappaB translocation into the nucleus, DNA binding and transcriptional activity. We a…

The Principle of Inferential Justification, Scepticism, and Causal Beliefs

2000

There is an argumentative route that begins with a platitude like: The Principle of Inferential Justification (PIJ): 'To be justified in believing one proposition P on the basis of another proposition E, one must be (1) justified in believing E, (2) justified in believing that E makes probable P' and ends up by challenging our capacity to justifiedly believing propositions concerning physical objects and past events. This is, at least, what Richard Fumerton claims, but, like Christopher Hookway, I doubt that there is such a route. In the coming pages, I seek to show how Hookway's challenge may find additional motivation in a reflection on the content of a certain kind of belief, namely: bel…

A Challenge to Boghossian's Incompatibilist Argument

1998

The paradox arises as we realize that (3) is clearly not knowable a priori, but (1) and (2) are. (2) holds 'a priori' because, according to Boghossian, it "just is the view that I have called the doctrine of privileged self-knowledge" (p. 202). The core of the paper is devoted, though, to argue that an externalist (i.e., someone who holds the view that "... facts external to a thinker's skin are relevant to the individuation of (certain of) his mental contents" (p. 199). is bound to concede that (1) is knowable 'a priori'. It would follow that, contrary to intuition, (3) can be known a priori since is the conclusion of an inference that relies on two premises that are, in

Operation and first results of the NEXT-DEMO prototype using a silicon photomultiplier tracking array

2013

NEXT-DEMO is a high-pressure xenon gas TPC which acts as a technological test-bed and demonstrator for the NEXT-100 neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. In its current configuration the apparatus fully implements the NEXT-100 design concept. This is an asymmetric TPC, with an energy plane made of photomultipliers and a tracking plane made of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) coated with TPB. The detector in this new configuration has been used to reconstruct the characteristic signature of electrons in dense gas, demonstrating the ability to identify the MIP and "blob" regions. Moreover, the SiPM tracking plane allows for the definition of a large fiducial region in which an excellent e…

Small field motion detection in goldfish is red-green color blind and mediated by the M-cone type

2007

Large field motion detection in goldfish, measured in the optomotor response, is based on the L-cone type, and is therefore color-blind (Schaerer & Neumeyer, 1996). In experiments using a two-choice training procedure, we investigated now whether the same holds for the detection of a small moving object (size: 8 mm diameter; velocity: 7 cm/s). In initial experiments, we found that goldfish did not discriminate between a moving and a stationary stimulus, obviously not taking attention to the cue “moving.” Therefore, random dot patterns were used in which the stimulus was visible only when moving. Using black and white random dot patterns with variable contrast between 0.2 and 1, we found…

A new algorithm for simulating flows of conducting fluids in the presence of electric fields

2012

Abstract We propose an algorithm based on dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) for simulations of conducting fluids in the presence of an electric field. In this model, the electrostatic equations are solved in each DPD time step to determine the charge density at the fluid surfaces. These surface charges are distributed on a thin layer of fluid particles near the interface, and the corresponding interfacial electric forces are added to other DPD forces. The algorithm is applied to the electrospinning process at the Taylor cone formation stage. It is shown that, when the applied voltage is sufficiently high, the algorithm captures the formation of a Taylor cone with analytical apex angle 98.…

Combinatorial Models in the Topological Classification of Singularities of Mappings

2018

The topological classification of finitely determined map germs \(f:(\mathbb R^n,0)\rightarrow (\mathbb R^p,0)\) is discrete (by a theorem due to R. Thom), hence we want to obtain combinatorial models which codify all the topological information of the map germ f. According to Fukuda’s work, the topology of such germs is determined by the link, which is obtained by taking the intersection of the image of f with a small enough sphere centered at the origin. If \(f^{-1}(0)=\{0\}\), then the link is a topologically stable map \(\gamma :S^{n-1}\rightarrow S^{p-1}\) (or stable if (n, p) are nice dimensions) and f is topologically equivalent to the cone of \(\gamma \). When \(f^{-1}(0)\ne \{0\}\)…

The c-map on groups

2019

We study the projective special Kaehler condition on groups, providing an intrinsic definition of homogeneous projective special Kaehler that includes the previously known examples. We give intrinsic defining equations that may be used without resorting to computations in the special cone, and emphasise certain associated integrability equations. The definition is shown to have the property that the image of such structures under the c-map is necessarily a left-invariant quaternionic Kaehler structure on a Lie group.

Transition from ideal to viscous Mach cones in a kinetic transport approach

2012

Using a microscopic transport model we investigate the evolution of conical structures originating from the supersonic projectile moving through the hot matter of ultrarelativistic particles. Using different scenarios for the interaction between projectile and matter, and different transport properties of the matter, we study the formation and structure of Mach cones. Especially, a dependence of the Mach cone angle on the details and rate of the energy deposition from projectile to the matter is investigated. Furthermore, the two-particle correlations extracted from the numerical calculations are compared to an analytical approximation. We find that the propagation of a high energetic parti…

Unified framework for generalized and transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions within a 3Q light-cone picture of the nucleon

2011

We present a systematic study of generalized transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs). By taking specific limits or projections, these GTMDs yield various transverse-momentum dependent and generalized parton distributions, thus providing a unified framework to simultaneously model different observables. We present such simultaneous modeling by considering a light-cone wave function overlap representation of the GTMDs. We construct the different quark-quark correlation functions from the 3-quark Fock components within both the light-front constituent quark model as well as within the chiral quark-soliton model. We provide a comparison with available data and make prediction…
