Er?mos Aporos as the Paradigmatic Figure of Western (Thanato) Political Subject

2013

The originary figure of the Western political subject is neither the Aristotelian zōon politikon nor the Agambenian homo sacer but the Socratic erēmos aporos. Like the Agambenian homo sacer, the Socratic erēmos aporos is abandoned by his fellow citizens, not outside the polis but in the polis, being a refugee in his own city. He lives, as Callicles says of Socrates in Gorgias (486c), “in his city as an absolute outcast.” Moreover, like the Agambenian homo sacer, the Socratic erēmos aporos also lives in a state close to death—“in a state as close to death as possible,” as Socrates says of himself in Phaedo (67d). However, there is a decisive difference between the Agambenian homo sacer and …

Samuel Fernberger's rejected doctoral dissertation: A neglected resource for the history of ape research in America.

2009

I summarize a never-completed 1911 doctoral dissertation on ape behavior by Samuel Fernberger of the University of Pennsylvania. Included are observations on many behavioral patterns including sensory and perceptual function, learning, memory, attention, imagination, personality, and emotion in an orangutan and two chimpanzees. There are examples of behavior resembling insight, conscience, tool use and imitation. Language comprehension was good but speech production was minimal. The document appears to contradict a brief published article on the project by William Furness in that punishment was frequently used. The document is important for understanding Fernberger's early career, for antic…

Departing from some texts by Jesús Moncada, Quim Mon…

La conciencia moral desde una perspectiva neuroética. De Darwin a Kant

2017

The personal moral conscience is one of the keystones of moral life. Darwin went as far as to claim that this constitutes the most important difference between man and the lower animals. Yet the most relevant philosophical proposals of our times (Rawls, Habermas) do not expressly deal with this, perhaps because, as Aranguren said, they gave priority to intersubjective ethics over intrasubjective ethics. Without reconstructing that intrasubjective ethics, however, both personal and social life is watered down. In this work an attempt is made to explain what personal moral conscience consists of, what its neurobiological foundations are, and whether these are enough to explain its irreplaceab…

Dialogue sur le handicap : réciprocité et altérité

2017

This dialogue is not one between a lecturer in philosophy (Pierre Ancet) questioning a person in a situation of physical dependency (Marcel Nuss), but a dialogue between two full-fledged authors. In this exchange the organic deficiency constitutes only the specific character of an individual’s experience, which is to be described without making it a pathology. Disability is considered in its organic, psychological and social dimension, as an incapacitating constraint, but also as a potential vector to discover nonstandard capacities. Among these capacities, the authors stress the consciousness of time and of the body, particularly unexpected as this consciousness is examined by an entirely …

La objeción de conciencia farmacéutica a la píldora postcoital

2003

The article represents a taking of position regarding the matter of the conscience objection towards the morning-after pill (MAP). The MAP is considered like an emergency contraception that the woman can take within the 72 hours from the sexual intercourse. The mechanisms of action of the product can be the following: a. to avoid the ovulation; b. to prevent the fusion between oocyte and sperm after the ovulation; c. to make impossible the implant of the embryo in the uterus. The author questions in the article if the MAP is abortive and, in this case, explicits the fundamental points of the Spanish law about the conscience objection. It is not difficult to ascertain that the MAP acts as co…

Le ‘for de la conscience’. L’invention d’une nouvelle frontière juridictionnelle (XIIIe siècle)

2013

A Comparison between Habituation and Conscience mechanism in Self–Organizing Maps

2006

In this letter, a preliminary study of habituation in self-organizing networks is reported. The habituation model implemented allows us to obtain a faster learning process and better clustering performances. The liabituable neuron is a generalization of the typical neuron and can be used in many self-organizing network models. The habituation mechanism is implemented in a SOM and the clustering performances of the network are compared to the conscience learning mechanism that follows roughly the same principle but is less sophisticated.
