International audience; The dinuclear Ni-II complex [Ni-2(L-2)][ClO4](2) (3) supported by the 28-membered hexaaza-dithiophenolate macro-cycle (L-2)(2-) binds the N-3(-) ion specifically end-on yielding [Ni-2(L-2)(mu(1,1)-N-3)] [ClO4] (7) or [Ni-2(L-2)(mu(1,1)-N-3)][BPh4] (8), while the previously reported complex [Ni2L1(mu(1,3)-N-3)][ClO4] (2) of the 24-membered macrocycle (L-1)(2-) coordinates it in the end-to-end fashion. A comparison of the X-ray structures of 2, 3, and 7 reveals the form-selective binding of complex 3 to be a consequence of its preorganized, channel-like binding pocket, which accommodates the azide anion via repulsive CH center dot center dot center dot pi interactions …
Complex formation of hypoxanthine and 6-mercaptopurine with Cd(II) ion

Reaction of Cd(II) ion with hypoxanthine (H2 Y) and with 6-mercaptopurine (H2 MP) in dioxane-water (50%) leads to the formation of CdY·2H2O and Cd(HMP)2·2H2O, respectively. In methanolic medium Cd(II) and H2 MP give Cd(MP)·H2O. These compounds have been characterized by chemical analysis, IR spectra and thermogravimetric analysis. The stability constant of CdY complex at 25±0.1 °C and 1M ionic strength with NaClO4 in dioxane-water medium is log β=10.25±0.05.
Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance

We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLD experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, $\MZ$ and $\GZ$, and its couplings to fermions, for example the $\rho$ parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle, are precisely measured. Natural optical anisotropy of h-BN: Highest giant birefringence in a bulk crystal through the mid-infrared to ultraviolet range

The giant birefringence of layered h-BN was demonstrated by analyzing the interference patterns in reflectance and transmittance measurements in the mid-infrared to the deep ultraviolet energy range. The refractive index for polarization perpendicular to the c axis is much higher than the refractive index for polarization parallel to the c axis, and it displays a strong increase in the ultraviolet range that is attributed to the huge excitonic effects arising from the unique electronic structure of h-BN. The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. Good performance of segmented contracted basis sets XZP, where X = D, T, Q and 5, for obtaining H2O, H2, HF, F2 and F2O nuclear isotropic shielding constants in the BHandH Kohn–Sham basis set limit was shown. The results of two‐ and three‐parameter complete basis set limit extrapolation schemes were compared with experimental results, earlier literature data and benchmark ab initio results. International audience; We set up a variational procedure of assignments of transitions and we applied it to the analysis very weak 'hot' bands, v(2) + 3v(3) - v(2) and 2v(1) + v(2) + v(3) - v(2), of the SO2 molecule. As the first step of the study, the 'cold' bands, 3v(3) and 2v(1) + v(3), are re-analysed and transitions belonging to those bands are assigned up to the values of quantum numbers J(max.) = 60, K-a(max.) = 19, and J(max.) = 69, K-a(max.) = 20 for the bands 3v(3) and 2v(1) + v(3), respectively. Influence of Anion and Cation Structure of Ionic Liquids on Carboxylic Acids Extraction

A recently proposed new mechanism and a model of reactive extraction of carboxylic acids by hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) was tested on five systems from published as well as from new equilibrium data on liquid-liquid extraction of butyric and lactic acids (BA and LA) from aqueous solutions. Two phosphonium and one ammonium ILs were used. The model describes experimental data for all systems with a good fit. The mechanism of acid extraction by ILs is very similar for all tested systems. This indicates a more general validity of the developed model. The model allows deeper understanding of regularities in carboxylic acid extraction by hydrophobic ILs.
