Staging the Impossible for Young Audiences: Preliminary Findings in a Research Project

2009

“You should not be able to notice that it is theatre for children!” says Suzanne Osten, Swedish theatre director. How is this view compatible with her statement that Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) should always take the child's perspective? In this article I draw attention to Osten's motivation and ability to do what some reckon to be impossible, unheard of, and/or irresponsible. Staging taboos such as divorce, suicide, eating disorders, and schizophrenia for children has been something of a trademark for Osten. I will widen the focus beyond the thematic content, by analyzing how she gives this a formal expression: how theoretical, aesthetic, kinesthetic, and playful approaches challenge…

Live, Laugh and Love to Learn Turning Learning from Traditional to Transformational

2015

In recent years, educators and policy makers have been focusing on student achievement and well-being. After the great Pisa -success and glory, Finnish researchers have risen up discussion about future skills, school activity and motivation – fields where Finnish students haven’t indicated so well. Quickly changing 21st century challenges teachers to see life outside the school and recognize not only the core subjects but also the key skills needed outside there. When transferring from traditional to transformational education, one has to imagine new ways to think about teaching and learning. The research project, introduced in this article, focuses on transformational pedagogic and the que…

Abstract. This study uses the EMAC atmospheric chemistry-climate model to simulate cloud properties and estimate cloud radiative effects induced by aerosols. We have tested two prognostic cloud droplet nucleation parameterizations, i.e., the standard STN (osmotic coefficient model) and hybrid (HYB, replacing the osmotic coefficient by the κ hygroscopicity parameter) schemes to calculate aerosol hygroscopicity and critical supersaturation, and consider aerosol–cloud feedbacks with a focus on warm clouds. Both prognostic schemes (STN and HYB) account for aerosol number, size and composition effects on droplet nucleation, and are tested in combination with two different cloud cover parameteriz…

Probing the electronic states of high-TMR off-stoichiometric Co2MnSi thin films by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

2014

The tunnel magnetoresistance ratio (TMR) of fully epitaxial magnetic tunnel junctions with an off-stoichiometric Co${}_{2}$MnSi Heusler alloy has been shown to exhibit a systematic dependence on Mn content, reaching 1135% at 4.2 K for Co${}_{2}$Mn${}_{1.29}$Si. In this paper, we explain the behavior of the observed TMR ratio using ab initio calculations and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). For the Mn-deficient samples, we show that the the drop of the TMR is caused by Co antisite atoms, which impose extra states into the minority-spin band gap. On the other hand, Mn-excess composition shows nearly half-metallic behavior. This result can be intuitively understood since both Co…

Effect of partial replacement of meat by carrot on physicochemical properties and fatty acid profile of fresh turkey sausages: a chemometric approach

2020

BACKGROUND This study evaluated the modification of physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid composition of fresh turkey sausages manufactured including carrot (Daucus carota L.) as a vegetable source (i.e., 10%, 20% and 30%, w/w). RESULTS The results were compared with sausages used as controls (i.e., containing 100% turkey meat, w/w). Overall, significant differences were detected for all of the evaluated attributes. The inclusion of 20% and 30% carrot (w/w) in the sausages resulted in a reduction of the lipid content (by 5.42 and 5.26 g/100 g, respectively) and reduced energy value (-7.6%). The color parameters were strongly affected by the inclusion of carrot, recording a signific…

Journalists’ Coverage of Online Firestorms in German-Language News Media

2016

When people perceive events that conflict with their expectations they can easily express their agitation and concerns online and likely find others who share their opinion. When large quantities of messages containing negative word-of-mouth suddenly spread in social media we speak of an online firestorm. By covering the outcry, journalists elevate it onto a mainstream communication platform and support the process of scandalization. Content analysis was used to explore how journalists, working for German-language media, cover this phenomenon. Over a period of 16 months, 130 online firestorms were identified and analyzed. Based on a typology of online firestorms, we have found that the majo…

Orígenes de las movilizaciones #primaveravalenciana. Un análisis de los actores sociales más influyentes en Twitter

2018

Twitter publics have become consolidated research objects. The main aim of this article is to make a contribution to this research current by analysing the social conditions that gave shape to the hashtag #primaveravalenciana. In order to do this, this study shall follow an analysis of the early tweets giving shape to this phenomenon. This approach shall stablish a participant's typology, identifying the most influent actors and pursuying a content analysis of relevant micro-messages which pushed forward the hashtag's viral expansion in the next few days. Against theories which tend to minimise the social distinction of digital actors, data analysis shows that the hashtag's origins were in …

Typology of think tanks: A comparative study in Finland and Scotland

2021

This paper provides a comparative analysis of current Finnish and Scottish think tanks and reviews how think tanks in these countries have evolved, how think tanks seek to influence decision making and engage with their stakeholders. To address the ways of influence this paper looks how Finnish and Scottish think tanks describe themselves and how they use publications in their advocacy. Conducted content analysis indicates that usually registered association based Finnish think tanks are generally more research-focused organisations, who overall deploy more research publications for advocacy than the company based Scottish think tanks. Findings also reveal that the number of think tanks in …
