An Evaluation of the Usability of a Computerized Decision Support System for Nursing Homes
2011
SummaryBackground: Computerized decision support systems (CDSSs) have the potential to significantly improve the quality of nursing care of older people by enhancing the decision making of nursing personnel. Despite this potential, health care organizations have been slow to incorporate CDSSs into nursing home practices. Objective: This study describes facilitators and barriers that impact the ability of nursing personnel to effectively use a clinical CDSS for planning and treating pressure ulcers (PUs) and malnutrition and for following the suggested risk assessment guidelines for the care of nursing home residents. Methods: We employed a qualitative descriptive design using varied methods, …
THE JOURNALISTIC TREATMENT OF THE NEWS RELATED TO DENGUE AND ZIKA VIRUSES IN THE DIGITAL MEDIA OF HONDURAS (2010-2017)
2019
N2O and NO emissions by agricultural soils with low hydraulic potentials
2002
N2O and NO production were studied on five agricultural soils with low hydraulic potentials. All experiments were performed in a laboratory under standard incubation conditions to limit any intrinsic soil heterogeneity. The mechanisms involved in NO and N2O production was investigated using the inhibitory properties of acetylene on nitrification and N2O reduction. This work confirmed that N2O and NO could be produced by soils under aerobic conditions. Nitrification seemed to be the only process involved in NO production and the main process involved in N2O production by the five studied soils when the water content was low. Nevertheless, aerobic denitrification with N2O release was observed…
Audiovisual constructs of Paralympic Games : scalarity and camera angle
2014
This research will analyze the variables differentiating between the audiovisual television of the XIII edition of the Paralympic Games and the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, held in Beijing from the 7th of September to the 17th, 2008. This study will serve as a methodological basis for similar future research. By means of a qualitative and quantitative methodology, this study also focuses on determining if TV representations of Paralympic sportspersons favour their social integration or if, on the contrary, lead to higher stigmatization.
Information needs and uses: An analysis of the literature published in Spain, 1990–2004
2007
This article presents a descriptive analysis of works published in Spanish journals and of the papers of conferences held in Spain in the field of information needs and uses in the period 1990–2004 in order to determine if the change in approach described by Dervin and Nilan, among others, also occurred outside the English speaking world. An analysis of the characteristics of relevant publications in this field (by year, authorship, type of document, type of work, and means of publication) shows that although activity is increasing, information needs and uses have not yet become a well-established area. In addition, a study of the content characteristics (by type of user, methodology used, …
Flow-injection determination of water in organic solvents by near-infrared spectrometry
1993
Abstract A flow-injection (FI) procedure was developed for the direct determination of water in organic solvents by using the O-H stretch absorbance band of water in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Dichloromethane was employed as a test solvent to study the influence of the flow parameters (carrier flow and sample injection volume) and time interval on the sensitivity and repeatability of the FI-NIR measurements. The developed procedure permits the determination of water in dichloromethane and isobutyl methyl ketone samples with limits of detection of 0.01 and 0.005% (v/v), respectively. Real and spiked samples of solvents were analysed by FI-NIR and accurate results were found. The method …
The sludge dewaterability in advanced wastewater treatment: a survey of four different Membrane BioReactor pilot plants
2017
The wasted activated sludge dewaterability represents a major concern for Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) managers. Indeed, whereas the dewatered sludge could represents a re-usable matrix, the principal drawback related to the wasted sludge dewaterability is the high water content due to the presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that allow the trapping of water molecules within the bio sludge flocs. In order to provide an outlook of the dewaterability features of activated sludge derived from advanced WWTP, the present research reports a long term survey (over two years) aimed at assessing the principal dewaterability parameters of the sludge wasted from different Membra…
Introduction: Cultural Literacy and Creativity
2021
AbstractThe introductory chapter explains the core concepts of the book: Cultural literacy and creativity. Cultural literacy is defined as a social practice that is inherently dialogic and based on learning and gaining knowledge through emphatic, tolerant, and inclusive interaction. Creativity is seen as stimulating cultural literacy learning through openness and curiosity to test and develop something new or imaginative. The chapter introduces the Cultural Literacy Learning Programme (CLLP) and the research data: 1906 works created by 5–15-year-old children and young people who participated in the program in 2019 and 2020 in Cyprus, Germany, Israel, Lithuania, Spain, Portugal, and the UK. …
Design and Style of Cultural and Media Studies Textbooks for College Students
2014
This paper uses the conceptual framework of multimodal discourse analysis in order to investigate the dominant styles and designs in selected Cultural and Media Studies (CMS) university textbooks. For many EFL students who major in philology, CMS courses are obligatory and thus constitute a type of content and language integrated learning (CLIL). The data from a description and evaluation of four popular textbooks indicate that there is a discernible move away from traditional literacy towards visuality and orality in textbook design and style. This tendency is evident in the use of segmentation and listing in composition, dialogic layouts and informal registers in exposition and visual aid…
Dialogical patterns of interaction in pre-school classrooms
2012
Abstract The present study set out to identify and examine dialogic educational interactions in Finnish pre-school classrooms. Video recordings of five observed pre-school classrooms that had shown a high or moderate quality of instructional support in literacy, maths and science studies were transcribed for micro-scale qualitative content analysis. Three patterns of teacher–child interaction emerged: first, a pattern characterised by the teacher making it possible for the children to demonstrate their knowledge and competence; second, a pattern characterised by the teacher supporting the children's participation and diverse contributions; and third, a pattern characterised by the teacher a…
