On the Trustworthiness of Error-Correcting Codes

2007

The use of error-correcting codes protects data against accidental or intentional errors, but to what extent can a decoded message be trusted? To answer this question, one has to take the role of the receiver. First, the maximum number of errors Lambda acceptable for decoding is fixed. With the weight distribution, the probability of false decoding can be calculated, conditioned on such a Lambda-bounded strategy. This probability is a monotonously increasing function in the channel error probability p and in the maximum number of accepted errors Lambda. Therefore, pure error detection is more trustworthy than error correction. Moreover, for sufficiently small p, codes with the lexicographic…

DESIGNING A TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR CHARACTER EDUCATION: AN INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

2020

There is a need of innovative teacher training programmes for character education. This paper addresses three research questions: What are the challenges that a teacher training programme for character education should address? What are the learning outcomes that the programme should achieve? How should the programme be structured for supporting the achievement of those learning outcomes? Two regional authorities, three schools, three universities and a centre of teacher training from Latvia, Estonia and Spain created a strategic partnership for answering these research questions, using design-based implementation research. The results include six domains of learning outcomes and a programm…

Dynamic Self-Consistent Field Approach for Studying Kinetic Processes in Multiblock Copolymer Melts

2020

The self-consistent field theory is a popular and highly successful theoretical framework for studying equilibrium (co)polymer systems at the mesoscopic level. Dynamic density functionals allow one to use this framework for studying dynamical processes in the diffusive, non-inertial regime. The central quantity in these approaches is the mobility function, which describes the effect of chain connectivity on the nonlocal response of monomers to thermodynamic driving fields. In a recent study [Mantha et al, Macromolecules 53, 3409 (2020)], we have developed a method to systematically construct mobility functions from reference fine-grained simulations. Here we focus on melts of linear chains …

Levy flights in confining environments: Random paths and their statistics

2013

We analyze a specific class of random systems that are driven by a symmetric L\'{e}vy stable noise. In view of the L\'{e}vy noise sensitivity to the confining "potential landscape" where jumps take place (in other words, to environmental inhomogeneities), the pertinent random motion asymptotically sets down at the Boltzmann-type equilibrium, represented by a probability density function (pdf) $\rho_*(x) \sim \exp [-\Phi (x)]$. Since there is no Langevin representation of the dynamics in question, our main goal here is to establish the appropriate path-wise description of the underlying jump-type process and next infer the $\rho (x,t)$ dynamics directly from the random paths statistics. A pr…

Incremental Treatments of the Full Configuration Interaction Problem

2020

The recent many-body expanded full configuration interaction (MBE-FCI) method is reviewed by critically assessing its advantages and drawbacks in the context of contemporary near-exact electronic structure theory. Besides providing a succinct summary of the history of MBE-FCI to date within a generalized and unified theoretical setting, its finer algorithmic details are discussed alongside our optimized computational implementation of the theory. A selected few of the most recent applications of MBE-FCI are revisited, before we close by outlining its future research directions as well as its place among modern near-exact wave function-based methods.

Pheromones and Chemical Ecology of Dispersal and Foraging in Termites

2010

Pheromones play a crucial role in the ecology of dispersal and foraging in termites. Sex-pairing pheromones possess a double role of long-range attraction to unite sexual partners and a short-range or contact attraction to maintain the pair during the tandem behaviour. Sex-pairing pheromones most often comprise a single compound capable of eliciting both behavioural effects. They appear very conservative in their evolution, and their role in the reproductive isolation of sympatric species greatly varies according to species. Species-specific sex-pairing pheromones consist of different major compounds or of a common major compound with species-specific minor components. Foraging is a collect…

Toward Three-Dimensional Chemical Imaging of Ternary Cu–Sn–Pb Alloys Using Femtosecond Laser Ablation/Ionization Mass Spectrometry

2017

Femtosecond laser ablation/ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS) has been applied to probe the spatial element composition of three ternary Cu-Sn-Pb model bronze alloys (lead bronzes: CuSn10Pb10, CuSn7Pb15, and CuSn5Pb20), which were recently identified as high-performance cathode materials in the context of electro-organic synthesis (dehalogenation, deoxygenation) of pharmaceutically relevant building blocks. The quantitative and spatially resolved element analysis of such cathode materials will help in understanding the observed profound differences in their electrochemical reactivity and stability. For that purpose, we developed a measurement procedure using the LIMS technique which allows…

A joint action of deep eutectic solvents and ultrasound to promote Diels−Alder reaction in a sustainable way

2020

The need to reduce environmental impact of chemical processes has induced a surge of attention in the choice of solvent and methodologies to carry them out. In this context, we studied the Diels−Alder reaction using N-ethylmaleimide as dienophile and changing the nature of the diene in deep eutectic solvents (DES) under both conventional heating and ultrasonic activation. DES obtained by the combination of different hydrogen bond acceptors and donors allowed assessing the role played by solvent nature. DES proved suitable solvent media for the target reaction, allowing higher yields and faster reactions compared to conventional organic solvents. The trend of yields, both in silent and under…

Synergies between Hyperpolarized NMR and Microfluidics: A Review

2021

Hyperpolarized nuclear magnetic resonance and lab-on-a-chip microfluidics are two dynamic, but until recently quite distinct, fields of research. Recent developments in both areas increased their synergistic overlap. By microfluidic integration, many complex experimental steps can be brought together onto a single platform. Microfluidic devices are therefore increasingly finding applications in medical diagnostics, forensic analysis, and biomedical research. In particular, they provide novel and powerful ways to culture cells, cell aggregates, and even functional models of entire organs. Nuclear magnetic resonance is a non-invasive, high-resolution spectroscopic technique which allows real-…

Structural characterization of iron oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles in nine different parenteral drugs for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia by …

2013

Drug products containing iron oxide and hydroxide nanoparticles (INPs) are important for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Pharmaceuticals prepared by the complexation of different kinds of INPs and carbohydrates have different physicochemical and biopharmaceutic characteristics. The increasing number of parenteral non-biological complex drugs (NBCD) containing iron requires physicochemical methods for characterization and enabling of cross comparisons. In this context the structure and the level of crystallinity of the iron phases may be connected to the in vitro and in vivo dissolution rates, which etiologically determine the therapeutic and toxic effects. X-ray powder diffraction…
