Religious Education in Finland: Promoting Intelligent Belief?

2000

This article discusses current dilemmas in religious education in Finland. Different interpretations of confessional religious education are presented in the context of the Lutheran tradition. Pedagogical applications of religious education advocated by Michael Grimmitt are explored as plausible approaches in promoting the religious understanding of students. The article presents some suggestions to enrich Grimmitt's pedagogy with a more argumentative approach, which unites both reason and feeling. Such an intelligent approach is arguably in accord with the pedagogical interpretation of confessional religious education.

Religious and spiritual motifs in the art of the patients of Nikkilä Hospital

2021

This article focuses on religiousness and spirituality in the art works of psychiatric patients of Nikkilä Hospital, Finland. The pictures analysed here belong to a collection held at the Helsinki City Museum and they were made during the twentieth century. The theoretical frame of the study is a cultural study of mental health. The collection is approached as presenting a specific kind of imagery which has connections not only to the personal history and diagnoses of the patients; their cultural context and hospital environment is also taken into account. The religiousness and spirituality of the Nikkilä collection are also compared with outsider art and examples of art history internation…

A Simple Cardiovascular Model for the Study of Hemorrhagic Shock

2020

Hemorrhagic shock is the number one cause of death on the battlefield and in civilian trauma as well. Mathematical modeling has been applied in this context for decades; however, the formulation of a satisfactory model that is both practical and effective has yet to be achieved. This paper introduces an upgraded version of the 2007 Zenker model for hemorrhagic shock termed the ZenCur model that allows for a better description of the time course of relevant observations. Our study provides a simple but realistic mathematical description of cardiovascular dynamics that may be useful in the assessment and prognosis of hemorrhagic shock. This model is capable of replicating the changes in mean …

Comparison of Micro X-ray Computer Tomography Image Segmentation Methods: Artificial Neural Networks Versus Least Square Support Vector Machine

2013

Micro X-ray computer tomography (XCT) is a powerful non-destructive method for obtaining information about rock structures and mineralogy. A new methodology to obtain porosity from 2D XCT digital images using artificial neural network and least square support vector machine is demonstrated following these steps: the XCT image was first preprocessed, thereafter clustering algorithms such as K-means, Fuzzy c-means and self-organized maps was used for image segmentation. Then artificial neural network was applied for image classification. For comparison, least square support vector machine approach was used for classification labeling of the scan images. The methodology shows how artificial ne…

Neural Networks as Soft Sensors: a Comparison in a Real World Application.

2006

Physical atmosphere parameters, as temperature or humidity, can be indirectly estimated on the surface of a monument by means of soft sensors based on neural networks, if an ambient air monitoring station works in the neighborhood of the monument itself. Since the soft sensors work as virtual instruments, the accuracy of such measurements has to be analyzed and validated from statistical and metrological points of view. The paper compares different typologies of neural networks, which can be used as soft sensors in a complex real world application: a non invasive monitoring of the conservation state of old monuments. In this context, several designed connessionistic systems, based on radial…

A Study of Perceptron Mapping Capability to Design Speech Event Detectors

2006

Event detection is a fundamental yet critical component in automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems that attempt to extract knowledge-based features at the front-end level. In this context, it is common practice to design the detectors inside well-known frameworks based on artificial neural network (ANN) or support vector machine (SVM). In the case of ANN, speech scientists often design their detector architecture relying on conventional feed-forward multi-layer perceptron (MLP) with sigmoidal activation function. The aim of this paper is to introduce other ANN architectures inside the context of detection-based ASR. In particular, a bank of feed-forward MLPs using sinusoidal activation f…

Tabu and Scatter Search for Artificial Neural Networks

2003

In this paper we address the problem of training multilayer feed-forward neural networks. These networks have been widely used for both prediction and classification in many different areas. Although the most popular method for training these networks is back propagation, other optimization methods such as tabu search or scatter search have been applied to solve this problem. This paper presents a new training algorithm based on the tabu search methodology that incorporates elements for search intensification and diversification by utilizing strategic designs where other previous approaches resort to randomization. Our method considers context and search information, as it is provided by th…

Fall Detection Based on the Instantaneous Doppler Frequency : A Machine Learning Approach

2019

Modern societies are facing an ageing problem which comes with increased cost of healthcare. A major share of this ever-increasing cost is due to fall related injuries, which urges the development of fall detection systems. In this context, this paper paves the way for building of a radio-frequency-based fall detection system. This paper presents an activity simulator that generates the complex channel gain of indoor channels in the presence of one person performing three different activities, namely, slow fall, fast fall, and walking. We built a machine learning framework for activity recognition based on the complex channel gain. We assess the recognition accuracy of three different class…

A Review of Kernel Methods in Remote Sensing Data Analysis

2011

Kernel methods have proven effective in the analysis of images of the Earth acquired by airborne and satellite sensors. Kernel methods provide a consistent and well-founded theoretical framework for developing nonlinear techniques and have useful properties when dealing with low number of (potentially high dimensional) training samples, the presence of heterogenous multimodalities, and different noise sources in the data. These properties are particularly appropriate for remote sensing data analysis. In fact, kernel methods have improved results of parametric linear methods and neural networks in applications such as natural resource control, detection and monitoring of anthropic infrastruc…
